Bicycle helmets for cyclists under 18 TORONTO - Ontario Transpor- tation Minister Al Palladini an- nounced recently that the prov- ince's new bicycle helmet law will apply only to cyt:lists under 18 years old. It takes effect October 1. "I certainly encourage Ontario cyclists of all ages to wear hel- mets," Palladini said. "However, adults can make a responsible safe- ty choice for themselves." Palladini also added that most other jurisdictions that have intro- duced bicycle helmet legislation have done so to protect minors. Statistics show that some 12 people under 18, years old are killed in cycling mishaps in Onta- rio each year -- and some 1,500 are injured. Seventy-five per cent of cycling deaths are the result of head injuries - injuries that helmet use can reduce by 85 per cent. Bicycle helmets must comply with at least one of the following nine safety standards printed on the inside of the helmet: Canadian Sandards Association: CAN/CSA D113.2 -M. Snell Me- morial Foundation: Snell B95, Snell B80, Snell B90S, or Snell N84. American National Standards Institute: ANSI Z90.4-1984. American Society for Testing and Materials: ASTM F1447-94. I've been wear- ing one for six years. 1 think it's a good idea for seniors and children. If and gets hurts it's the taxpay ers who pay for it. It's like the seatbelt law, people will get used to it." BSI Denney Exeter "I don't like the government shoving it down everybody's throat, I think it should be up to (the cyclists] to decide. But if they are going to make kids wear helmets then the adults should to show a good exam- pie." Lori MacPherson Crediton "I think every- one should wear one. Adults get hurt too and they're on the road more than the kids. " Eric Blkkers London "I don't like the govemment en- forcing this at all. ! think eve- rybody on bikes should do what they want with- out the govern- ment telling what to do. There is too much govern- ment regulation as it is." Blake Schad. Exeter "I don't like it because it should be up to the cyclist, but I think parents should make the decision for young chit- dren." April Smale Exeter -"i think it's stupid. The law should apply to those who are under 16 years old. If you are responsible enough to drive then you are re- sponsible enough to de-sion cide if you want to wear a hel- met." Kelly Muldoon Exeter "I think under 18, they're not really responsi- ble to make their own deci-anyone slons. Once you're 18 you're mature enough to make that deci- on your own." Dawn Murray Exeter "I think that everyone should wear them because could fall off and have a head in- jury, not just those under 18." Tom Rlchber Exeter "! think it should be un- der 18. Those ones 18 and above should be responsible to make their own deci- Bions." • Awards and scholarships for SHDHS graduates EXETER - South Huron District High School held their commencement ceremonies on Friday night.
