Competition winner: Al Hern
Saskatchewan.
"That week they were taught how
to share their faith," said Boyachek.
"Toronto was the highlight for
me," said his wife, Sandy, "because
we did so many different things."
A trip to Algonquin Park, ap-
propriately called Back to the Ba-
sics, kept 14 members of the
youth group busy for a weekend
early in August. Morning Bible
studies were teamed with basic
camping adventures such as fish-
ing, canoeing and backpacking.
"The kids were able to explore
God's creation but also spend time
with him," said Pastor Boyachek.
"It was team building," added
Sandy.
During late August, 10 volunteer
teens taught Bible lessons at the
church's week of free Day Camp.
Similar to Vacation Bible School,
camp events, which usually took
place outdoors, included songs,
bible stories, games and crafts.
The camp was attended on week-
day mornings by 50 children from
kindergarten age to grade 6. Ac-
cording to Pastor Boyechek, 60 to
70 per cent of the day camp at-
tendance consisted of kids who
weren't members of the Baptist
church.
In response to the entire sum-
mer's Great Adventure, Pastor
Boyachek said "We have seen
some amazing spiritual growth
within the kids' lives. Also, as a
youth group we have seen a greater
spiritual bond."
Sandy described the mission as
"putting...faith into action."
The Great Adventure was funded
by a combination of church funds
and work days, which involved +he
church hiring out labor for odd
jobs. Fundraising for the program
began in April.
The Emmanuel Baptist Church
already has ideas for nest sum-
mer's Great Adventure. Perhaps the
youth group will travel further and
stay longer to help a northern
church or community.
We want the kids to go beyond
their comfort ,one," said Pastor
Boyachek.
The Great
Adventure
* "I went to SEMP. It was
fun. I met new people. Then we
went camping. That was fun too.
Then we taught some kids. That
was not as much fun. Then we
went to Cedar Point. That was
enjoyable. SEMP was th fun -
nest. "
(Ryan Rutledge, 15. Exeter)
* "I'd have to say the most
memorable experience 1 had
was...going out to downtown
Toronto and just talking with the
prostitutes. 1 never really re-
alized that they're real people
too. Or else going to Algonquin
National Park. It's so beautiful
down there. You can really see
God's handiwork.
Day camp was great. I never
had a chance to CO to camp this
year so this was my chance. I
loved the kids and [ even had the
chance to talk with four girls
and witness them ask Jesus into
their hearts. It ws great."
(Sarah Vanderlaan, 15. Sea -
forth)
The Emmanuel Baptist summer youth group participated in the church's first Great Ad-
venture. Back row, from left to right, Laura Bowers, Becca Vanderlaan, Sandy Boyachek, Pas-
tor John Boyacheck, Joyce Elson and Ryan Rutledge. Front row. from left to right, Sarah Van-
derlaan, Robert Turner, Lauren Webster and Rob Hopkins. Absent were Colin Bowers. Alan
Vanderlaan and Crystal Hopkins.
Reactions of participants
* "We went to SEMP. Worked on the weekend to raise money
to go and then we did day camp. I enjoyed SEMP the bestest. I re-
dedicated myself to the Lord. It was like a spiritual hath, if you
will."
(Rob Hopkins, 17, Hensall)
* "1 wasn't able to go on the trips because of a hurt leg. But do-
ing the work days really brought us together as a team. I noticed that
when the group came back from SEMP that there was a geat impact
made on them. I feel 1 really missed out. 1 hope to go next year.
I was able to help teach day camp. I really enjoyed working with
the kids. There were some kids there that didn't behave very well
and liked to fight but it was funny how some Bible stories could
make them stop and listen. It's nice to know I helped them under-
stand God."
(Joyce Elson, 16, Lieury)

The Great Adventure
helps teen spirituality
Brenda Burke T -A staff
EXETER - It was named The
Great Adventure, and with good
reason.
The Emmanuel Baptist Church
organized three summer excursions
for its high school youth group in
an effort to improve the spiritual
growth of teens.
Nine area students participated in
July's Sonlife Evangelical Missions
Project (SEMP) in Toronto, which
involved a week of exposure to
various ministries at the Ontario
Bible College.
The project, attended by 300
teens across North America, also
had students work in the Scott Mis-
sion Soup Kitchen for a day as well
as visit a homosexual community
and supply street people with food.
Participants were "basically try-
ing to share the love of God with
those people through food," said
Pastor John Boyachek.
Besides their on -the -street learn-
ing, students attended morning mis-
sionary classes that included a mo-
tivation speaker, Mary Penner, of
