Foodgrains tour to stop
at Thames Road Church
The tour will begin in
Centralia.

THAMES ROAD - Rev. Jim All-
sop was in charge of the church ser-
vice at Thames Road United
Church on Sunday morning. The
responsive reading was taken from
Psalm 139:13-18.
The choir sang "Brighten the
Corner" accompanied by organist
_Marilyn- V-andenbussche.
They sang the children's hymn
"Seek Ye First the Kingdom of
God" and Rev. Allsop told the chil-
dren's story "Follow the Leader".
The scripture lesson from the Old
Testament Jeremiah 18:1-1 1 and
from the New Testament Philemon
1:1-25 was read by June Stewart.
Rev. Allsop read from the Gospel
of Luke 14:25-33.
The title of his sermon was
"Counting on You."
The closing hymn 'Guide Me, 0
Thou Great Jehovah" was sung.
The flowers on the communion
table on Sunday were placed there
in memory of the late Alma Snow
by her family. Sympathy of the
community is extended to the fami-
ly.

On Wednesday, September 13
the U.C.W. Fall Regional will be
held -at- Centralia United Church.
Registration time is 6:45 p.m. with
coffee at 7 p.m., followed by busi-
ness at 7:30 p.m. the theme is
"Give to Us Laughter".
"A Day in the Country" Food -
grain Project car tour is planned for
Saturday, September 16. It starts at
Centralia United Church at 10:30
a.m. where coffee will be served
and the tour map can be picked up.

Persoeals
Quite a number of people from
this community called at the Hop-
per -Hockey Funeral Home in Exet-
er on Tuesday to pay their respects
to the late Alma Snow and attended
her funeral on Wednesday. Sympa-
thy is extended to her family and
relatives.
Ross and Kay Hodgert, Bill and
Rhoda Rohde went to London on
Thursday evening for supper and
then to a show. The Hodgerts' were
celebrating their 4I st anniversary
and the Rohdes were celebrating
their 47th anniversary, both on
September 11.
A number of people attended
Kirkton Fair on Saturday and the
Demolition Derby and the Fid-
dler's Jamboree on Sunday.

They played euchre
after their meeting.

VARNA - The Stan Lee Club re-
sumed its fall.meeting on Septem-
ber 6 with a picnicdinner in the
outside pavilion at the Stanley
Complex. The weather was perfect
and around 35 seniors enjoyed the
dinner. They retired to the Complex
afterwards and Anna opened the
meeting with a welcome poem
"The Old Rocking Chair".
Several activities were an-
nounced. An Open House at Gode-
rich Place to see their new facilities
for seniors with an offer to speak to
their club sometime.
It was decided by a vote of hands
to attendthe concert at Clinton Le-
gion for their October meeting. The

The treasurer's report was given
by Boh Stirling. Louise Hayter an-
nounced the Fall Rally to be held in
Exeter on October 5. Registration is
between 11:30 and 12:15 and lunch

Bob Reid gave a humorous read-
ing of Church Announcements.
Bill Pepper and Leona McBride en-
tertained with some old favorites.
Reid gave a few jokes. Marg
Hayter gave a reading and after a
few more musical numbers, the
meeting was adjourned.
Eight games of euchre were
played and the winners were High
Helen Pepper and Elmer Hayter.
Low was Ruth Johnston and Anna
Keys.
Community shower
A community bridal shower was
held for Kim Hayter Thursday eve-
ning. Norene Keyes welcomed eve-
ryone and Kate Keys gave a mes-
sage about "Wives" and "Nothing
that Suited Him". Leanne Keys and
Marianne Hayter did a duet accom-
panied by Erin Keys on the piano.
A skit was performed starring
Marg Hayter, Sandy Hayter, Linda
Keys, Helen Keys and Peggy Keys.
Anna Keys read the address and
gifts were presented to the bride-to-
be. She gave a very gracious thank
you and lunch was served.
She is marrying Kevin Arm --
strong and their wedding will be
September 30 with the reception to
follow at the Complex.
Church service
The Varna Church service on
Sunday was led by Miriam DeRiv-
ers. The call to worship was fol-
lowed by prayers Of the coinmunity
and an opening hymn. Carol Si-
mons read the Hebrew scripture
Jeremiah 18:1-1 1 followed by
Reader one and Reader two Cara
and Leanne Stephenson. Heather
Andrew, Graham and Cameron
Laurie did the Epistle reading

Joe Laurie, Sunday School super-
intendent, introduced the Sunday
School teachers and children and
they presented them with their di-
plomas and seals. •
The act of Recovenanting fol-
lowed with s ball of yarn passed
around so everyone was joined to-
gether with the yarn. -The service
ended with a closing hymn, prayer
commissioning and the benedic-
tion.
Next Sunday church service will
be a combined anniversary service
in Varna at 10:30 a.m. with Bruce
Whitmore as guest speaker.

United Church on Sunday. Septem-
ber 10. His sermon topic was "The
cost of our discipleship" with scrip-
ture read from Philemon 1:21 and
Luke 14:25-33. Special musical of-
fering was a solo by Don McLean.

Flowers placed in the sanctuary
were in memory of Dorothy_ Rid-
