Field Hockey clinic
focuses on the basics
SHDHS grads and past

EXETER - In 1989 Leanne Die-
trich and Becci Farquhar played to-
gether on the first South Huron
District High School field hockey
team to win OFSAA.
Last week the two graduates
teamed up once again to conduct a
field hockey clinic at the high
school playing fields on Thursday
and Friday.
Previously held by field hockey
coach Jim Workman, the clinic is
designed to give junior students a
chance to sample the sport before
trying out for the team and to give
senior returning players the op-
portunity to play before getting
hack into action.
"Were sticking to the basic skills
and they seem to he enjoying
themselves," said Dietrich. Ap-
proximately 10 girls showed up for
Thursday's clinic to run through the
passing, dribbling and stick han-
dling techniques.
Kim Taylor was a newcomer to
the sport. She thought the clinic
was a good way to get a feel for the
game before deciding if she want-
ed to try -out for the field hockey
team.
Julie Godholt has played before
hut she attended for the workout.
"It's a good way to get back in
shape and sharpen your playing
Allis," said Godbolt.
The girls participating in the clin-
ic were instructed by two very ex-
perienced players.
Both Dietrich and Farquhar are
seasoned veterans of the sport. Die-
trich, a graduate of the University
of Waterloo won the Athlete of the
Year Award last year for her per-
formance on the varsity field hock-
ey team. She accumulated the most
points scoring seven goals for Wa-
terloo leading the team to a third
place overall finish.
"Leanne is bringing in a lot of
knowledge and a lot of skill into
this clinic. I enjoy getting a chance
to play with her again," said Far-
quhar.
Since graduating from SHDHS,
Dietrich has been volunteering with
the school's field hockey team. This
season she will he channelling her
efforts towards her job as the coach
for the University of Western On-
tario's varsity field hockey team.
Dietrich said young athletes who
play other sports such as ringette
and soccer should give field hockey
a try because the hand -eye co-
ordination they learn from these
sports provides a good background
for field hockey.
"It's a unique sport but once you
get used to it, it can be a lot of
fun," she said.

EXETER - Ontario Lawn Bowl
Association held the Provincial
Championship for mixed pairs
event in Niagara Falls on the
weekend.
Peter and Gloria McFalls repre-
sented District 4 - along with 15
other districts. Bowlers were
placed in groups of four teams
with the top two teams advancing
until Sunday. Two points were
given for a win and 1 for a tie
game.
Exeter defeated Baling Beach,
Toronto 23-7, tied Wheatley 15-
15, lost 14-13 to Belleville which
forced a 7 end playoff game with
Wheatley Saturday night to deter-
mine which team advanced. Exeter
won 7-4 in this tie-breaker.
Exeter met Agincourt Sunday in
an elimination game which ended
in a tie 17-17. The tie was broken
by playing an extra end which
went to Agincourt. The remaining
teams went on in the afternoon for
the medal rounds.
