Cool treat for summer reading
The Huron County Library Summer Reading program wrapped up at the Exeter Branch Li-
brary on Friday with a treat of ice-cream cones. Only those children who had read at least
five books this summer qualified for cones. The program was very successul this year
with 84 children between four and 12 signed up. Pictured above are Jonathon Matthew
Thompson enjoying their cones.
My Fair Lady
closes main
stage at Country
Playhouse
Brenda Burke T -A staff
The main stage at Huron Country Playhouse closed perfectly for the
season with what is known as the perfect musical - My Fair Lady.
David Dunbar plays the stuffy, rude Henry Higgins, a professor who
decides to transform flower girl Eliza Doolittle, played by Tracey
Anne Moore, into a lady by training her to speak proper English.
Much of the musical's wit is displayed through its humorous use of
dialogue.
"Should we ask the baggage to sit down?" is one of the first lines
Higgins throws at Doolittle.
Doolittle's speech lessons are loaded with phrases made hilarious by
her innocent mannerisms and hyperactive emotions.
"The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain," she finally gushes with
success after days and nights of practicing pronunciation with the ex-
hausted professor.
When My First Ladv was first taken to the big screen in 1964 it won
eight Oscars including Best Picture. It's no wonder - the story is not
only visually exciting with stage motion, it's emotionally fulfilling as
well.
Much of the story's tension hangs on the unique love/hate story be-
tween Higgins and Doolittle, with common arguments, avoidances,
gushes of emotion and learning experiences common to relationships
from past to modern day.
Doolittle and Higgins, along with the girl's father, played by George
Merner, arc obviously the strongest characters of the musical in which
players roll smoothly from one scene to the next in elaborate costumes
on polished sets.
Main character solos are also performed with convincing energy, es-
pecially those by Doolittle (Just You Wait) and her father (With a Little
Bit of Luck).
Supporting actors however, along with boisterous singers and en-
ergetic young dancers such as Exeter residents Hilda Steele and Joa-
nathan David Thornton, give My Fair Lady its spunk.
Professor Henry Higgins, right, receives help teaching Eliza
Doolittle how to enunciate in My Fair Lady.
