10 YEARS AGO
August 28, 1985 - Ontario Minister of Agriculture Jack Riddell
and Minister of Government Services Elinor Caplan officiated at the
opening of a new research and demonstration farm at Centralia Col-
lege Wednesday afternoon.
The farm is situated on Concession 3 of Stephen township about
two miles north of the Centralia College location.
K&L Construction of London won the contract to construct Exet-
er's new nursing home. `
25 YEARS AGO
August 29, 1970 - The feature attraction at the Zurich Bean Festi-
val continues to be beans, beans and more beans. Saturday's fifth
annual festival drew the largest crowd in history with more than a
ton of the tasty beans being devoured.
35 YEARS AGO
August 30, 1960 - Jack Darling and Garble Fritz were chosen king
and queen of Exeter Kinsmen's summer playground which conclud-
ed Thursday night with a cowboy and Indian parade.
George H. Follick of Hensall has retired after serving as manager
of Wm. Rennie Seeds in Hensall for the past 43 years.
The addition of three new rooms to Exeter Puhlic School is pro-
gressing rapidly as school opening time draws near. The extension
will give the building a total of 16 rooms to handle record enrolment
this fall.
40 YEARS AGO
August 31, 1955 - The Ontario government has ordered a survey
of the Pinery on which to base plans for its development as a public
park.
Construction of an $18,(XX) Christian Reformed Church at the
north end of Exeter started last week.
Jimmy Hayter Jr., whose father is a well-known hockey and base -
hall player won a Shetland pony in a draw at the second annual frol-
ic of the Dashwood Men's club on Wednesday evening.
50 YEARS AGO
August 30, 1945 - The harvest is very nearly all gathered in this
vicinity and it has been an abundant one and favored with good
weather. Both hay and wheat have been excellent.
Dr. and Mrs. E.S. Steiner and Tom returned on Monday from a
visit with relatives in Morton and Rochester, New York.
George Hudson who has been caretaker of the Hensall Continua-
tion and Puhlic School for the past 18 years has resigned and Thom-
as Richardson has been appointed to succeed him.
75 YEARS AGO
August 31, 1920 - The Dashwood baker is kept busy day and
night turning out loaves of bread for his many customers from
Grand Bend.
Wednesday, August 20 is the last of the weekly half holidays in
Exeter for 1920.
By far the best load of cattle leaving this station for many years
was shipped by Mr. Wes Snell on Tuesday. to the Gunn Packing Co.
who will show them dressed at the Toronto Exhibition.
The work of preparing Wellington street for the new pavement is
about completed. The canvass among the farmers for gravel was
most successful and met with a hearty response close to 1,000 loads
of gravel being promised.
100 YEARS AGO
August 30, 1895 - Like many other villages, Dashwood has been
setted with the boom. Messrs. Rannie and Paulin, our enterprising
hardware men arc building a large block on the corner of Main and
Mill s'hich will cover three large stores. Mr. Henry Willert is erect-
ing several brick houses and a large flax mill and barns south of the
village. He intends going into the flax business and next year will
put in some 500 acres. Beside this one of the handsomest churches
in the county is being built.
While all was silent the other night burglars broke into the store of
J. Kellerman and burst open the safe. They used two chisels stolen
from the workshop of William Zimmer. After drilling a hole in the
top of the safe they put on a big charge and got no money. They
then btirst.the ti1tand got 50 Its which was left for change. ,-

Zion West United Church cele-
brated their Decoration Day on
Sunday, August 27. Many people
enjoyed the service which was or-
ganized and presented by Dr. Bob
Graham and his wife Ellen. Their
music was especially lovely. Bob
Hern gave the report of the Ceme-
tery Board.
On Sunday, September 3, Cen-
tralia and Zion West United
Chutches will worship together at
9:45 a.m. at Zion. Regular worship
times will resume on September

her vacation. Thanks to Rev. Ed

On Wednesday, September 13,
Zion UCW will host the Regional
meeting of the South Huron Pres-
byterial at Centralia Church begin-
ning with registration at 6:30 p.m.
The theme of the meeting will be
"Let There Be Laughter".
June and Bill Essery hosted the
Newcombe family reunion on Sun-
day, August 27 at their farm,
Spruce Grove. Ruth Ann and Matt
Pickett visited from Owen Sound,
and other family members travelled
from Detroit and Pontiac in Michi-
gan.
The children and parents were
thinking about the return of school
since their schools reopened Mon-
day, August 28 after summer vaca-
tion. Children in Ontario, however,
have one more week to enjoy their
vacation before returning to school.
Everyone enjoyed the potluck
meal and outdoor activities includ-
ing football, volleyball, and base-
ball.
Euchre
The recent euchre party at Hey -
woods Restaurant included a birth-
day celebration. Ken Hardy, a reg-
ular player from the Ilderton area, o
was surprised when birthday cake
and ice cream appeared in honour
of his 90th birthday which was Au-
gust 20. Edith Eaton and Harry
Noels were High Hand winners,
and John Cooper won the Special.
Mary Scott and Percy Noels were
Lone Hand winners.
