Winds of fortune blowing
Rotor blade production plant opening soon in Huron Park

HURON PARK - The winds of
fortune may be blowing for Huron
Park, a small community that re-
cently lost Centralia International
College as a source of employment.
By the end of September, Tacke
Windpower Inc. will be opening a
rotor blade production plant in Hu-
ron Park. According to Helge Wit-
tholz, Tacke president. the plant
will need to hire 65 people to oper-
ate the 4,460 metre (48.000 square
foot) plant. To date 23 employees
have been hired and many have re-
ceived up to a month of training.
"In order to supply 300 hlades we
need 65 people." Wittholz told the
T -A on Monday.
Tacke is a subsidiary of a Ger-
man -based engineering company,
Tacke Windtechnik, specializing in
wind power technology. In its first
year, the plant will manufacture
300 hlades to be purchased by the
parent company for $9.5 million.
Wittholz said after Chernobyl. Ger-
many has funded much research
into alternative to nuclear power.
"It (wind power) is now a $I bil-
lion business in Germany." said
Wittholz..
The 20 -metre -long hlades will be
used to build 600 kilowatt wind tur-
bines. The massive three -bladed
machines can each produce enough
power to meet the electricity need
of up to 150 homes.
Wittholz has also been directly
involved with the development of a
$1.29 million, 600 kilowatt turbine.

ton, Ontario. Wittholz said the pro-
ject is now nine months old and
should he completed by early Oc-
tober. The initiative will receive
about $350,000 from the research
arm of Natural Resources Canada.
The completed turbine will be a test
unit to ensure the original German
design adapted for Canada's cold
climate is viable. The site will also
provide training on how to service
the machines and serve as a show-
piece for potential clients. Wittholz
is the former vice president of op-
erations for London-based Di-
amond Aircraft Industries which
was supposed to manufacture the
blades and supply engineering man-
power for the project. Tacke was
to provide the design for the blade.

Exeter not a 'ghost town'
"There certainly seem to be lots
of very lively ghosts around..."
Dear Editor:
It seems some idiot has called our lovely town of
Exeter a "Ghost Town"! What stupidity!
There certainly seem to be lots of very lively
ghosts around, not dragging chains like Dicken's
Christmas Carol. Just listen to the shouts of the
young athletes at the soccer field or baseball dia-
monds, or the rumble of heavily laden trucks on
their way to the canning factory. or the chatter of
happy shoppers at the street markets and Main
Street stores. We know people who come from
some distance to search out bargains at our shops -
better prices and material than London or other cit-
ies. So. there are a few empty stores - not as many
as the towns of comparable size - and things arc get-
ting better!
Ghost Town - nonsense!
Yours truly,

EXETER - A Vehicle Licence Bureau will be re-established in Ex-
eter after a contract was signed with Ministry of Transportation by
Rose Marie Rader of Exeter.
Rader plans to open the new office at 388 Main Street South, at
the back of the building where Helen Johns has her constituency of -
flee. The bureau should be open by
mid-September after Rader has at-
tended two weeks of training.
The office hours will be from 9 am

Rader said she has a great deal of
customer service experience and looks
forward to her new business endeavor.
"I've got 20 years of customer ser-

ward to serving Exeter and arca," said Rader.
Exeter has not been serviced by a licence bureau since Wallace
Seldon, who ran the bureau office for 28 years, died on April 6.

vehicle licence office.

Drive -In battling with
MTO for many months
GRAND BEND - Starlite Drive -
In owners are taking a signage bat-
tle with the Ministry of Trans-
portation to the civil courts.
For the past several months, the
owners of Grand Bend's Starlite
Drive -In Theatre have been active-
ly negotiating with the MTO to ob-
tain a designation as either a tourist
destination or resort area. These
designations would allow the own-
ers of the drive-in to put signs on
Highway 81 at Huron County Road
4 on a user -pay basis.
According to Allan P. Barnes of
Starlite, the Chatham office of the
MTO has refused to repond to re-
peated phone calls, faxes and reg-
istered letters, all requesting a copy
of the official signing policy and an
application to request an amend-
ment. "Since members of the MTO
have seen tit to ignore a request
made by the Ontario Ombusman's
Office, the owners reluctantly an-
nounce their intention to file a fed-
eral charter of rights violation seek-
ing to strike down several illegal
sections of the Public Trans-
portation and Highway Improve-
ment Act," Barnes stated in an
Aug. 28 press release.
According to Barnes the local
civil action will seek the return of
two temporary directional signs
that were unlawfully removed and
confiscated by local "over -zealous"
MTO patrol officers.
