Rotary Club of
Grand Bend
to sponsor
circus
GRAND BEND - It was an-
nounced that a contract has been
signed by the Rotary Club of Grand
Bend and Kelly -Miller Bros., Ltd.
for the exhibition of the three ring
tent circus to be held here in Grand.
Bend on Thursday, July 27, 1995
for two performances at 4:30 p.m.
and 7:30 p.m. at Port Blake Conser-
vation Area, Hwy. 21, 1/2 mile
north of Grand Bend.
Founded in 1938 by the famed
Miller family of Oklahoma, it is
one cf the few remaining tent cir-
cuses in America.
Asked if we could expect a tradi-
tional 'Old Time' circus, co-owner
and manager, David Rawls, said
"our business is built on tradition"
and promptly extended an invita-
tion to the public for a free preview
on circus morning starting at 7:30
a.m. to see the animals unloaded
and the tents raised. The tents will
go in the air between 8:30 and 9:00
a.m. and guides will be furnished
for children of elementary school
age.
The upcoming years circus event
promises to be an even grander af-
fair than in years past, as David and
Carol Rawls present the '93 edition
of the Kelly -Miller Circus.
The circus is just one of the many
fund raisers the Rotary Club of
Grand Bend has each year in order
to raise money for the many servic-
es it provides the community.
Provincial Parks
are the place to
'Take a Hike'
GRAND BEND - The staff of
Parks Ontario, the new organiza-
tion for the planning, management
and operation of Ontario's 265
provincial parks, invite you to join
in the celebration of Parks Day in
Canada by visiting your favorite
park on Saturday July 15. This
year's theme is "Take A Hike".
Many parks will have programs
and activities reflecting this theme.
"Parks Day is an excellent op-
portunity for Ontarians to show
their support for provincial parks,"
said Norm Richards, Managing Di-
rector, Parks Ontario. "I cannot
think of a better way of spending a
summer's day than in Ontario's
great outdoors."
Here in the Grand Bend and
Pork )~ranks area, Parks Day cele-
brations and activities will include
the Canada "Take A Hike" pro-
gram to help raise funds for a park
bicycle trail. At Pinery Provincial
Park the Friends of Pinery have
helped to plan and offer the event.
Parks Day in Canada is orga-
nized by the Federal Provincial
Parks Council, with the participa-
•
tion of the Canadian Parks Partner-
ship and the support of many cor-
porate sponsors.
Parks Day is a national event
celebrated by all territories, prov-
inces and the federal government.
There are over 33 million hectares
of parklands in Canada.

EXETER - The first day of Don's
Exeter Flea Market included at
least 150 browsers and 30 tables of
crafts, baked goods, plants, an-
tiques and odds and ends.
Don and Barb Kenney opened the
Sunday, year-round market July 2
at the Legion.
"For the holiday weekend, it
wasn't had," said Barb, who added
she can probably fit up to 40 tables
in the space in an effort to ac-
commodate more venders.
In May Don decided to start up his
own flea market after a failed at-
tempt to sell his goods at another
area market.
"I sold a cup and made 15 cents
and I decided right then," he said.
The couple plans to donate half the
market's admission proceeds from
every first Sunday of the month. to
the Exeter Food Bank. From
their first Sunday market they gath-
ered $25 cash and two boxes of
food for the food bank.
September marks the market's
All -Cancer Month, during which
half the proceeds of admission go
towards the Cancer Society. Then
the market will donate to a different
charity each week, putting aside the
first five weeks for Exeter charities. their goods in the off-season, and
The market is also planning a Fun are considering doing business with
them on a year-round basis. The
venders may also be attracted to
Don's indoor flea market on rainy
days.
"We already warned our venders
that if it rains be prepared to shift a
bit," said Barb.
Meanwhile, the couple has been
busy tilling up any empty tables
with some of their own stock.
"(Don) was going to sell our
truck," remarked Barb, who added
once all the market's tables are
filled, the couple will sell less of
their own items.
"We wanted to make sure we had
a minimum of tables before we
started," said Barb. "I'd rather go in
somewhere that's full."
If the market gathers too many
venders or gets too busy with cus-
tomers, it may later use a larger ve-
nue such as the South Huron Rec-
reation Centre.
Regardless of where the market's
permanent home is, the Kenneys
want to give it a family atmosphere
with special events for its venders
and a booth set up to promote other
local businesses.
Fair in August, consisting of a day
of childrens' outdoor games and ac-
tivities including a fishing pond
and bike decorating.
"To play games you have to bring
a canned good," Barb explained.
Admission to this event and to the
market each Sunday is 25 cents or a
non-perishable food item.
The Centralia couple sees a need
for an area year-round flea market
since markets at Grand Bend, Bay-
field and Goderich run only season-
ally from Victoria Day to Labor
Day.
The Kenneys say venders from
these markets need a place to store
