Power boats
begin poker run
from Grand Bend
GRAND BEND - More than 50 of North America's most sensa-
tional off shore racing boats will participate in the Power Boating
Canada Lake Huron Poker Run in Grand Bend this weekend on July
7to9.
Sponsored in part by Snap-On Tools Canada, Grand Bend will
host some of the worlds fastest exotic power boats producing up to
3,000 horsepower as they each race to five checkpoints where the
captain is given a sealed envelope containing a single playing card.
At the end of the Poker Run the cards will be revealed and the
crew holding the best poker hand will be declared the winner.
Terry McTavish from Grand Bend is the Chairperson for the Lake
Huron Poker Run. He said the event draws out several thousand
spectators which provides a tremendous economical boost to local
business. •
"The beauty of this is that this is not a race it's a poker run," said
McTavish emphasizing that the event is designed to promote off-
shore boating in Canada.
"Grand Bend is the host community so we've got the boats here
Friday, Saturday and Sunday, whereas they show up in the other
communities for only a couple of hours," he said, adding the boats
will only make short stops in Bayfield, Kincardine and Goderich
along the run before returning to Grand Bend.
McTavish describes the watercrafts as custom made high per-
formance boats with three super -charged big block engines, the
boats are usually over 30 feet long.
"Some of them look quite swank with over $800,000 tied up in
them and we've got a handful of boats that are capabale of over 100
mph," he said.
