als on Thursday. The Centennials won the Battle for Exeter beating the Fury 4-1 in a
convincing victory.
Centennials defeat Fury
The Centennials claim home -town victory in 4-1 win over Fury
EXETER -The Exeter Centenni-
als and the Exeter Fury met for the
first time this season in a game that
was meant to decide the
better hometown soccer
team.
What was originally pre-
dicted to be a close game
turned out to be an easy
victory for the Centennials
as they defeated the Fury 4-
1 on Thursday.
The Fury were outplayed
from the start of the game. Mid -
fielders Ruban Chelladurai and
Rudy Veldhuizen played strong
creating many scoring op-
portunities for their teammates but
Fury goaltender Randy Mac-
Donald made several big saves to
keep his team in the game.
After being foiled twice, Nick
Szabo got behind the Fury defense
and finally opened the scoring late
in the first half with a strike to the
top corner.
The Fury defense worked hard
trying to limit the Centennials shots
on net but they couldn't do any-
thing to prevent Dar-
iano from scoring on
a penalty kick after
Szabo was tripped
up in the penalty
area making the
score 2-0 early in
the second half.
Well placed cross -
passing by the Cen-
tennials allowed Chelladurai to
score his team's third goal after a
wild scramble in front of the Fury
net. Szabo rounded out the scoring
after braking in alone and scoring
on the run bringing the score to a
commanding 4-0 for the Centenni-
als.
However, the Fury didn't give up
as midfielder Jeff Lingard was re-
warded late in the game with a goal
on a corner kick from Pete McAI-

lister. The Fury goal came late in
the game and spoiled Centennial
goal keeper George McEwan's
shutout bid.
Fury coach Jason McFalls was
impressed by how well the Cen-
tennials played.
"They used the whole field by
keeping their players wide which
really helped their passing game.
That was the best ball control team
we have played this year," said
McFalls. "Hopefully we'll learn
from this game and use it to im-
prove in the second half of the sea-
son," he said.
The win advances the Centenni-
als in Division 2 Cup play where 1
they will travel to London to play
their rivals Benfica on July 11.
Meanwhile the Fury will play
their next two games away from
home when they travel to St.
Thomas on July 6 and then to Lon-
don against the Latinos on July 8.
Exeter
Express
having best
season since
1988
EXETER - The Exeter Express
senior baseball team defeated By-
ron 5-2 on Friday June 29 bringing
their overall win/loss record to 11-
3.
Mike Agnew pitched four perfect
innings before leaving the mound
due to shoulder stiffness. Marty
Merner finished the game but gave
up two runs on three hits before the
game was out.
Exeter started the scoring in the
second inning on a double by Mar-
ty Meurer and a single by Dave
Russell. Russell, Don Macdonald
and Fred Gregus added two more
runs for the Express on doubles
and Scott Russell and Paul Smith
hit doubles in the sixth inning
while Ron Elliot struck for a sin-
gle.
This game was typical of how the
Express have been playing all sea-
son. This is their best start since
winning the OBA championship ti-
tles in 1986 and again in 1988.
A talented pitching staff has been
the backbone for the team from the
start and their defense has been
sharp averaging only two errors per
game. Catchers Ron Elliot, Bill
Glover and Mark Glavin have been
solid behind the plate and Exeter's
offense has been consistent averag-
ing nine runs per game.
In the past, offense has usually
been the ball club's weak spot;
however, the Express presently
have five batters hitting over .400 -
Rick Boon, Rob Dickey, Marty
Merner, Paul Smith and Scott Rus-
sell and four others are hitting over
300.
The Express are hoping to con-
tinue playing well both offensively
and defensively this weekend when
they play in the Lakeside -London
Open Tournament from July 7-9.

EXETER - The Exeter Thunder
Minor Soccer club defeated the
London Curringa 1-0 on Thursday.
Chad Gilfrllan scored the Thun-
der's game winning goal with five
minutes left in the game moments
after London missed on a penalty

Strong goaltending and smart de-
fensive play by Adam Jean kept
London off of the scoreboard giv-
ing Exeter the shutout.

der to the next round in Ontario
Cup play in a game against Matton
in Exeter on Sunday June 9 at 2:00.
Catch the fun during
Ontario free fishing weekend
EXETER - Cast your line and
"Catch the Fun" during the Onta-
rio Fishing Weekend, July 7,8 and
9. The weekend provides people
with an opportunity to not only
discover, or rediscover, the joys of
fishing, but also the social and en-
vironmental values of our waters
and the life within them.
The weekend, proposed by the
Ontario Federation of Anglers and
Hunters (OFAH) is license -free.
The Ontario Ministry of Natural
Resources waived the requirement
for an angling licence during the
three-day event, but all other fees
and regulations apply, including
the limits set for Ontario Conser-
vation Licences. You can find
them in the 1994 Sport Fishing
Regulations Summary, which is
available from fishing licence is-
suers (check in bait and tackle
shops, marinas or hardware stores)
or Ministry of Natural Resources
District and Area Offices.
The weekend provides exciting
opportunities for Ontario residents
to enjoy Ontario's great recreation-
al fishing - that contributes to On-
tario's economic and environmen-
tal well-being.
The second annual three-day
OFFW begins at 12:01 a.m. Fri-
day, July 7 and ends at 11:59 p.m.
Sunday July 9 (the weekend imme-
diately following Canada Day
weekend).
