Centennials on
a winning streak
EXETER - The Exeter Centennials continued their winning streak
defeating St. Columban 1-0 on Sunday. •
The out of town game could have gone either way. Both teams
seemed to be evenly matched and were getting good chances at each
end.
However, the momentum shifted in the second half as Exeter
pressed hard dominating the rest of the game. Ruban Chelladurai
ane; Rudy Veldhuizen controlled the midfield for the Centennials
setting up the shooters with some good scoring opportunities.
After several near misses and a shot off the post, Jeremy Wright fi-
nally converted a cross from Veldhuizen heading the ball into the
top corner of the net.
As usual, the Centennial defense was strong holding St. Columban
to only four scoring chances for the entire game. The defensive play
of Joe Dariano, John Flanagan, Aaron Weston, John Watson and
Patrick Donnelly, coupled with the aggressive play of goal keeper
George McEwan shut the door on the host team allowing their for-
wards to force the play.
The Centennials league record climbs to 4-3-1, and they are un-
defeated in five games. Exeter will be looking to add to their four
game winning streak on Tuesday July 4, at home when they go up
against their rivals, the Nairn Cardinals.

second win of the season.
Where have all
the pigeons gone?
L. de Haan
EXETER - The New Demo-
crats arc Andering what hap-
pened. The Detroit Red Wings
are wondering what happened.
And pigeon men all over south-
western Ontario are wondering
what happened.
On Saturday, June 17, the Lu -
can Homing Pigeon Club held its
annual 500 -mile Frank Hardy
Memorial race. Pigeon racers
from Stratford, London, Wood-
stock, and St. Thomas also partic-
ipated in this open race. In all, ex-
actly 100 pigeons were entered in
this special race to compe ror
the $500 guaranteed first •
Banding and loadir _e
pigeons had taken ptac on
Thursday evening to allow the
truck -driver to start the long drive
to Grand Mere, Quebec, early
Friday afternoon.
Everything looked good at
Grand Mere when the pigeons
were released at 6:00 Saturday
morning. The only thing a bit un-
usual was that the birds headed
straight south. The remaining pi-
geons were trucked back to Corn-
wall, Ontario and released at 9:00
a.m.
Now, even though the 500 -mile
race is a "tough" one, in previous
years a good many pigeons have
always managed to get home on
the day. Not this time! When
darkness fell that Saturday eve-
ning, not one of the 100 top rac-
ers had returned to its home loft.
Consequently, Sunday at sun-
rise, many worried pigeon men
again began scanning the skies
with Squinted eyes. They had to
wait some more. It was not until
3:18 in the afternoon that Rob
Smith from London, Ontario
clocked the winning pigeon. The
tough Hardy birds were close be-
hind: Tom clocked pigeons at
3:31 and 8:30 p.m. and his uncle
Norm recorded a bird at 5:36
p.m. Wayne Gibson, RR 3 Lu -
can, had a good pigeon at 7:06
p.m. And these pigeons were the
only ones out of one hundred that
made it home in race time.
So .what happened? Basedon
the truck driver's observation,
the theory is that the birds went
too far south, possibly because of
a weather disturbance. As they
gradually began to head west,
these pigeons eventually found
themselves south of the St. Law-
rence and Lake Ontario, and pos-
sibly Erie: a complete reversal of
their normal return pattern. And
their instinctive fear of flying
acros* large bodies of water only
compounded their predicament
of disorientation.
At last report, a week later,
about half the birds had struggled
back.
