THE STUDENTS OF THE YEAR WILL BE ANNOUNCED ON FRIDAY, JUNE 9 AT SEASCAPE
JEFFREY BOWEN - In his five years at South Huron,
Jeffrey Bowen has contributed to the SHDHS environment
in a positive manner. Since his grade nine year, Jeff has been
a participant of many groups in the Music Dept. including
Concert Band, Jazz Band and Choir. As well, Bowen has
participated on the Reach for the Top team and attended the
provincial championships. In his grade 11 year Jeff became a
Peer Mentor and one year later the co-ordinator of the
Sexual Assault Awareness team. Other areas in which Jeff
has made a contribution have been Drama productions such
as "Bring Back Birdie" and "What Glorious Times They
Had: Nellie McClung", served as an Audio/Visual
Technician for assemblies and special events and worked as
a Prefect since his grade 12 year.
This year Jeff continues his active participation in the
Music Dept. and Reach for the Top, and has served as the
Treasurer for SHDHS Student Council. Jeff believes that a
positive attitude, dedication and hard work can get you far
in life and he has always given his best effort to live up to
this. Jeff is the son of Tom and Joanne Bowen of Exeter.
AARON GARDINER is the son of Ben and Jan Gardiner
and resides with his two younger brothers on a farm east of
Exeter. Aaron has been involved in many aspects of school
life and extracurricular activities such as being a lifeguard at
a local pool.
He played on the basketball team for his three years in
high school, and then for the past two years he has been
part of the Guidance Support Team. This year he served as
Student Trustee representing the interests of South Huron
District High School at the Huron Board of Education. As
the introductory year of this position, this experience
required a major commitment of time and effort. While
trustee, Aaron served on the Management Committee and
the Quality Daily Physical Education Committee.
Over the past five years, he has maintained an honour
roll standing and is planning to pursue Business and
Accounting at University this fall.
STEVE HENDRICK - Steve's contributions to high
school life have been mostly focused academically. This is
reflected by his placement on the honour roll throughout his
years at South Huron. Steve has been a tutor for his peers, a
former basketball player, a member of the Reach for the Top
team; as well as a participant in the Physics Olympiad in
Toronto this past year. In grade 12, Steve did his co-op
placement at the Ilderton Equine Clinic where he is
currently employed on Saturdays.
Steve hopes to attend the University of Guelph in
September in pursuit of a career in veterinary medicine.
Steve is the son of Howard and Yvonne Hendrick of RR2
Crediton.
DENIS McCANN has been actively involved in school life at
South Huron since the beginning of grade nine.
Athletically speaking he has been a member of the basketball,
volleyball, curling and track and field .^ams as well as playing in
the last year of South Huron's ' :...Send of football.
In his four years of basketball ....a volleyball, Denis has been
fortunate enough to be part of Huron Perth championship teams.
This year he played in the basketball all-star game. Denis' love for
basketball allowed him the opportunity to assist in the grade
school basketball clinic and to coach a basketball team at a local
school. He enjoys coaching basketball and has twice attended
Camp Sylvan as a junior leader.
Denis has enjoyed his years at South Huron and feels he has
gained from his experiences. This year he took an active role on
Student council as Social Convener. In this role he arranged dances
and semi -formals. Athletics and SC have kept him busy
throughout the year but Denis has maintained respectable grades
and has had fun.
Denis is the son of Pat and Lynne McCann from Mt. Carmel. In
the future he plans to study engineering at university.
Denis believes that commitment is important and that you only
get out of something what you put into it.
MICHELLE DUCHARME has actively enjoyed her five
years at South Huron while maintaining academic excellence
throughout.
Since grade nine, Michelle has been an active music
student participating in the choir, triple trio, music executive,
two school shows and the award winning wind ensemble.
Aside from these musical abilities, Michelle has proven to be
an excellent athlete while playing and coaching volleyball.
Since grade 10, Michelle has shown her true dedication to
school life through her involvement in the Peer Mentor
program. Michelle has been a key to the evolvement of this
peer helping program while acting as co-ordinator for the
past two years. She was also one of the originators of the
Sexual Assault Awareness Group and has also acted as a
prefect for the past two years. Collectively, these efforts have
made a difference in the lives of many fellow students and
has made an impact on school life.
In the fall, Michelle is planning to attend King's College,
Western for a degree in social work. Michelle is the daughter
of Carol Ducharme.
MATT GODBOLT Throughout the past year Matt has
taken an active part in school involvement and is quite proud
to have been recognized for his accomplishments. As the
captain of the hockey team he had the opportunity to a assist
the team to its first Huron Perth championship title. He also
had many roles throughout his student council position at
South Huron. The second vice position allowedhim to be
involved in assemblies, dances, planning and many special
events. Matt's involvement in the school show this year with
a significant part, had its rewards as well as putting in some
time in the school choir in the first half of the year. Matt will
be finishing up the year with a total of eight OAC courses to
which he has maintained a strong B average. His future goal
is to head to university in the fail. Throughout Matt's
previous years at South Huron, he has been involved in such
activities as: Camp Sylvan, hockey team, track and field,
school show, prefect, choir and Guidance Support team. Matt
is proud to be recognized as a nomination for student of the
year and feels privileged to be recognized as an individual
who takes an active part at South Huron.
Matt is the son of George and Lois Godbolt, Exeter, Ont.
DARREN KINTS has maintained a busy schedule
combining and achieving excellence in academics, athletics,
work and extracurricular activities. A budding entrepreneur
and presently employed by both Exeter Shell and The Beer
Store, Darren has found time in participate in the Peer
Mentoring program as well as the Guidance Support Team.
In addition, he has enjoyed and worked hard in serving the
students in his position as vice president of this year's
Student council. Throughout all of this, he has achieved
honour roll standing in each of his five years at South Huron.
Darren has played goal for the junior boy's soccer back-to-
back Huron -Perth championships, and competed in WOSSA
as a senior. Playing hockey for the Panthers he was named
the Top Defensive Player, then continued on to play with the
Exeter Junior Hawks. Other extracurricular activities include
minor soccer, baseball, fastball, as well as training young
goalies in a yearly hockey school. As a member of the Exeter
Royals fastball team, he played a key role in winning the All
Ontario Championship.
Darren is planning to attend the University of Western
Ontario in the fall to study business. Darren is the son of
Frank and Frances Kints of Woodham.
CHRISSY PARKER daughter of Doug and Henny Parker from
Exeter, has enjoyed her years at South Huron and in her attempt to
give something back to the school she has been very active this past
year.
She has served as South Huron's first female Student Trustee
for the Huron County Board of Education during the 1994-95
school year. She is one of no more than ten students in the entire
province acting as a Student Trustee. In doing so, Chrissy has
represented the interests of South Huron at the Board Table as a
monthly participant in regular meetings. She has also served on the
Executive Committee as a contributing member of deliberations in
areas of public relations,Liaison with Administration with other
government bodies, trustee organizations and with employee
groups and the overall budget direction. Chrissy also served on the
Healthy Living committee, which the Board just recently
developed.
Athletically speaking, Chrissy was "rock'en in the house" on
South Hurons curling team. At first, not thinking she could "hack"
the sport, she undoubtedly had a great time throughout the season.
With all these added extra -curricular activities Chrissy has
maintained a considerable academic standing. Always motivated
by challenge, she plans to a attend the University of Western
Ontario and major in Political Science.
JEN ROMPHF has been very active during her 5 years of
South Huron. She is a member of the school's volleyball,
basketball, and soccer teams; helped coach the midget and
junior girls basketball teams; and served as a coach for the
elementary school basketball clinic. Jen is a member of
OSAID, peer mentoring, the Student Council , the
chairperson for the Athletic Council and the Student
representative on the Board's Peer Mediation Committee.
She represented Huron County at the Ontario Educational
Leadership Camp in Orillia. She is a two time winner of the
South Huron Paw award for athletics and was Athlete of the
Year for 1994. Recently, Jen was presented with the
outstanding achievement for the co-operative education
program and received an Excellence in Public Education
award. Jen has maintained excellent marks and will be
attending university in Alberta to study Physical Education.
Jen is the daughter of Terry and Sharon Romphf.
ERIN O'ROURKE has been actively involved in many
aspects of student life throughout her five years attending
SHDHS. A special focus has been in the music department as
both a musician and vocalist. She is in various school bands,
including the wind ensemble, black jazz band as well as
concert choir and triple trio. Erin has been a member of
OSAID, peer mentoring, a prefect and a spirit leader. Drama
has also been an interest of hers, having taken part in many
school play productions as well as the Crossroads Drama
Festival in Blyth, using her talents in singing and dancing.
Erin continues to study ballet, jazz and tap dancing.
Despite her hectic schedule she has attained honours in her
OAC year.
Erin's very proud parents are Pat and Gwen O'Rourke of
the metropolis of Khiva. She plans to attend McMaster
University studying social sciences.
BRONWYN PEARSON has actively enjoyed her five years at
South Huron. She has been successful academically by maintaining
honour roll status all five years and has been involved in many
aspects of student life as well.
Pearson has always been a very busy and hard-working member
of our school's music department. She has been a part of the jazz
band, concert band, choirs and the gold medal winning wind
ensemble of 1994. She is the music executive president and has
taken over running the Junior Triple Trio in the absence of the
school's vocal teacher. She was chosen to represent South Huron at
music Leadership Camp last summer and has received two honour
awards at regional competitions.
As well as music, Pearson has been involved with many drama
productions, both large and small, as both an actress and behind the
scenes.
In past years, she has been part of the Guidance Support team
and Peer mentoring.
Recently she was presented an Excellence in Education Award
and will be entertaining children at the Literacy Festival in Clinton
on June 6th.
Pearson hopes to attend the University of Western Ontario to
study Music and History. She is the daughter of Doug and Teri
Pearson of RRl Exeter.
KRISTI SARGEANT an OAC student, participates in all
aspects of school life. In addition to achieving honours in her
five years of high school life, her contributions to the school
are varied, with a common thread of service, reflecting her
desire to help others.
She has shared her time and talents as a Peer Mentor, a
Peer'Il.ttor, Prefect, and member of the Guidance Support
Team where her efforts were greatly appreciated by both the
teachers and students. Kristi is a student representative to the
Parent -Teacher -Student Association and a member of
OSAID' Krista traveled to Ottawa as a delegate to the Forum
for Young Canadians, and she acted in the 1994 Crossroads
Drama Festival production of "1000 Cranes". Recently, Kristi
received an Excellence in Education Award rewarding her for
her dedication and success. Kristi plans to a attend the
University of Ottawa to study political science. Her very
proud parents are Robert and Gayle Sargeant.
