Back-to-back wins on the
weekend puts Exeter way
in front of the series

EXETER - Talent and team - those are the two
words which best describe the Exeter Ladies Aux-
iliary Peewees.
Sunday afternoon they came from behind to beat
visiting Prince Edward County Kings 5-4 and take a
commanding four -points -to -none lead in their six -
point Ontario Minor Hockey Association peewee
'CC' finals.
It was a very successful weekend for the hosts
who won the championship series opener 4-2 Sat-
urday night at the South Huron Recreation Centre.
Exeter can win the title on Friday when they head
to Prince Edward County. It the Kings win, the next
game will be played Saturday and if the series be-
comes tied, the deciding game will be played Sun-
day.
"That team isn't going to beat us three times," said
Exeter coach Bob McDonald. •
"They haven't lost too many games until they've
come down here (to Exeter)".
Heading into what hopefully will he their final
game of the year, the Legion peewees have a 14-2-2
OMHA playoff record and have scored 113 goals
compared to just 53 by the opposition.
"It's a good hunch of boys. They're really keen
and everyone is contributing," said McDonald.
In Sunday game, captain Jeff Campbell had three
goals, including the winner but credit also has to go
to a strong defence including Barry Parsons and
Jared Bourne which did a superb job on Kings' cap-
tain Barkley Vanhecke.
Trailing 2-0 just five minutes into the game, Exet-
er chipped away and pulled to within a goal when
Jason Grenier lugged the puck down the right side
and muscled his way into the zone.
"They (Kings) had a lot more jump in their skates
than we did but luck was on our side," said McDo-
nald.
Although it was 3-1 for the visitors after the first
period, Chad Monteith banged one in from the side
of the net and it was Campbell getting the equalizer
as he went down on a breakaway and although he
was slashed on the play and a penalty was being
called, made the score 3-3. Campbell and Mike Seip
teamed to make it 4-3 after the second period.
Early in the third, Kings' Mike Stever tied it up on
a powerplay and it stayed tied at four until 2:25 left
in the game when Campbell netted the winner.
The winning goal came when the hosts buzzed the
Prince Edward County net and Campbell banked
one off a Kings' defenseman's skates.
"Campbell works for every goal he gets," said
McDonald after the game. The Exeter captain leads
the team in scoring with 30 playoff goals.
In Sunday's game the much bigger Kings played
physical early in the game, more so than the night
before.
"They were a little more aggressive today than
they were last night," said McDonald. "It's our
speed that kills them." •
Three in a row: Sunday's game made it three in a
row as Exeter won the opener 4-2 on Saturday.
Campbell and Scott Keys had two goals each while
Kian MacDougall set up two goals. Also helping
out on goals were Bourne, Monteith and Tim Mav-
er.
Last Wednesday night in Exeter, the Legions'
eliminated Mitchell 5-2 to win the semi-finals.
Monteith had two goals with singles from Camp-
bell, Seip and Tim Maver. Everyone seemed to get
in on the scoring as MacDougall helped set up two
goals while also drawing assists were Grenier, Ryan
Groot, Parsons, Bourne and Andrew Maver.
Rebels go to final series
Stephen Township peewees eliminated Cayuga
HURON PARK - There is a good
chance the Ontario Minor Hockey
Association peewee 'E' champion-
ship trophy may not leave Huron
County.
Saturday afternoon the Stephen
Township Rebels beat Cayuga 6-2
to advance to the OMHA finals. A
year ago it was the Zurich Storm
getting their name etched in the
winners trophy.
A very balanced scoring attack
help the Rebels win the semi-final
series and will now advance to take
on Port Carling in the finals. Game
One against Port Carling will be
played Saturday in Huron Park at 2
p.m. and then the following day in
the same arena at 1 p.m.
Against Cayuga on Saturday,
Shawn Stuckless teamed with
Shawn Sherwood and Jeremy Van -
Bergen after the hosts applied some
very heavy forechecking.
Jeff Finkbeiner made it 2-0 with
4:53 left in the opening frame and
it was 3-0 when Adam Wilson
jumped on a rebound. Danny Mos-
urinjohn who took a lot of abuse in
front of the Stars net all game, and
Jamie Clarke had the assists on
what proved to be the winner.
In the second, Mosurinjohn
scored from Stuckless and it was 4-
2 after two periods as Joe Baird and
Cole Cronk answered for Cayuga.
It was all Stephen Township in
the third as VanBergen knocked in
a shot from Sherwood and than
Sherwood parked himself in front
of the net and took a feed from
VanBergen.
Exeter peewee forward Jason Grenier tried to bang the puck in during Saturday's 4-2 win.
Dorothy Pfaff of the Exeter Legion Ladies Auxiliary dropped the puck between Exeter captain
Jeff Campbell and Barkley Vanhecke of Prince Edward County. In another ceremony Satur-
day night, mayor Ben Hoogenboom dropped a puck with Frank Winters of Huron Tractor.
Sonics head to OMHA finals
It took the fifth and deciding game to beat Alvinston

ALVINSTON - Not one but two
teams from Stephen Township are
going to the Ontario Minor Hockey
Association finals.
Saturday afternoon the peewee
Rebels beat Cayuga and advance to
take on Port Carling (see this
week's edition). Later the same
night the atom Sonics beat host Al-
vinston 4-2 and will now take on
Oops in the 'E championships.
The Sonics will host the first
game of the OMHA series on Sat-
urday at 4 p..m. and then again at
the Stephen Township Arena in
Huron Park on Sunday at 3 p.m.
"We were having trouble getting
ice and so were they so we left it at
a six -point series," said Sonics
coach Dick Lord.
Saturday in Alvinston it went
down to the third period as the
teams were tied 2-2 after two pe-
riods of play.
"We really settled down in the
third period and they couldn't get
going," said Lord. I felt if it was
ihow
even going into the third that we
would win it."
The scoring started at 5:07 when
Alvinston's Kurt VanDesRecken
made it 1-0 but four minutes later
Brian Dixon teamed with his lin-
emates Jesse Schroeder and Bray -
den Lbrd.
In the second frame Schroeder
scored from Henny Pfaff to put the
visitors up 2-1. However, Alvinston
captain Adam Swan evened the
count.
It was all Stephen in the third as
Dixon got his second, this one from
Pfaff and with less than three min-
utes to go, Lord scored from Jeff
Rollings.
"We played better than we have
been. The defense came together,"
said Lord.
On the subject of defense, goalie
Gary Sauder was outstanding
throughout the series and in Friday
night's game in Huron Park he
stopped Alvinston's Zake Hunt at
least three times on breakaways.
"It's only his second year of play-
ing net and he's played well," said
S: ephen Township's Henny Pfaff, left; battled for a loose puck
during Friday night's game against Alvinston.
Lord.
The march to the final for the
Sonics began by beating Wallace in
the first-round of the playoffs, that
was followed by winning the West-
ern Ontario Athletic Association ti-
tle over Clifford which doubled as
the quarter -finals.
That put Stephen into the semis
against Alvinston and it went right
down to the fifth and deciding
game in the six -point series.
In the semis, the Sonics won the
first game 8-3, lost the second 7-3
and bounced back to win Wednes-
day night in Alvinston
Alvinston 4, Stephen 2
Friday night in Huron Park, Al-
vinston players wore black arm
bands in mediory of their friend
John Black who passed away on
Thursday.
It seemed to inspire them as they
trailed 2-1 at one point but came
back to win 4-2.
Stephen opened the scoring when
Dixon let go with a high rising shot
right off of the draw which was one
by Lord. The powerplay goal came
