Hawks drop first to Lancers
Junior 'D' playoffs
Continued from page 14 '
Prior to Sunday's game, the
Hawks and the Lancers have not
faced off since December 16. Of
the five games played, both won
twice and one game was a 3-3
deadlock.
"They've picked up a couple of
guys. They're a better hockey team
than the last time we played them,"
said Revington. "They've got size

LUCAN - There were no brooms
at the Lucan Arena but there was
lots to celebrate last Wednesday
night as the Lucan Irish swept the
visiting Seaforth Centenaires four
games straight.
A shorthanded goal by defense -
man Wil Giles saw the Irish elim-
inate the Cents and advance to the
OHA Junior Development League
quarter -finals against the Pt. Stan-
ley Lakers.
Game One of the semi-finals
went last night (Tuesday) in Pt.
Stanley and the best -of -seven series
comes back to Lucan tonight at
8:15 p.m. 1
Lucan faced Pt. Stanley five
times during the regular season and
failed to come up with a win
"It might be a little edge for them
(Lakers)," said Lucan coach Scott
Bogart. "We are playing a lot dif-
ferent than we did during the regu-
lar season."
Against the Centenaries it wasn't
a dominating sweep for the Irish
who were eliminated by Seaforth in
similar fashion a year ago.
Three of this year's four post -
season games were one -goal vic-
tories for the Irish including last
Wednesday's 4-3 win. Scoring the
winning goal, a shorthanded rush-
ing effort, was rookie defenseman
Wil Giles.
"They (Seaforth) shot it, 1 caught
it and there was no one around so 1
just kept going," said Giles after the
game in describing the winning
goal. "The goalie went down and 1
just waited and put it in the open
side."
Seaforth jumped into a huge 3-0
lead early in the game but Mike
Robb closed the gap to two goals
by the end of the first period. In the
second period the hosts got not one
but two lucky breaks as Steve Hud-
son and Giles both bounced shots
off of Seaforth defensemen and
past netminder Dave Nahrgang.
"Everyone came out with the at-
titude we were going to win easy,"
said Giles. "We came into the
(dressing) room and everyone said
get moving, get working."
The night before in Seaforth, the
Irish won the third game quite easi-
ly, a 6-1 victory. Scoring in that
one were Jeremy Jemec and Hud-
son with two goals each with one to
Greg DePrest and one goal plus
two assists to captain Steve Mat-
thews.
While Giles' back-to-back goals
ignited the comeback, the spark to
start things going was led by the
'Triple D' line of Daryl Boshart,
Dave Jenken and Dave Lindberg
which although did not score,
buzzed around the net and a big hit
by Boshart brought the Irish bench
to life.
Also a big key in this game was
the goaltending of veteran Steve
Watson. After getting a much de-
served rest in Game Four after
three starts against Seaforth, Wat-
son watched the start of Wednes-
day's game as Knyvet Carson went
between the pipes.
The Irish however couldn't hack
Carson and after the three Cen-
tenaries goals, Watson was put in
to hold the fort.
"We've got our
work cut out
for us."
and speed and a lot of balance."
It also doesn't hurt, from the
Lancers' perspective, to have Jeff
Baldachin in net. The veteran
puckstopper was a key factor in not
only Sunday's win but the playoff
series win against two-time de-
fending champion Mitchell.
Sunday saw the Lancers jump
into a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes and
they increased that to 5-2 after two
periods.
Chris Kennedy teamed with Sean
McCann and Jamie Cornish for a
Hawks' powerplay goal and the sec-
ond marker came from Ray Cou-
sineau and set up by linemates
Steve Farquhar and Nathan Blight.
And what do the Hawks have to
do to get back into the series?
"I expect anybody can be beaten
in March," said Revington. "We
have to play at a higher level to
beat them."
Sweep the Bombers: Last
Wednesday night in Belmont the
Hawks had little trouble in what
was to be the fourth and final game
of the series as they won 5-1.
Game Throe in Exeter last Tues-
day night was the most interesting
of the series as the Bombers' Mark
Watson scored with just one second
left in regulation, on a penalty shot,
to send the game into overtime.
However, with 54 seconds left in
the 10 -minute extra period, Mark
Livermore lugged it down the left
side of the rink and got a centering
pass to Shayne Robinson.
Exeter Hawks fans will re-
member a similar situation which
saw a game against Mt. Brydges go
into overtime. This one with the
Bombers was nearly identical as
the net was knocked off with one
second left, compared to three ticks
on the clock against the Bulldogs.
The hosts totally dominated this
game as they outshot the Bombers
a whopping 53-21 in the 5-4 Exeter
win. Besides Robinson's winner,
also scoring for the Hawks were
Chad Gilfillan, Gavin Snell,
McCann and Kennedy.
Exeter had to play with four de-
fenseman for a good part of the
game as Jason McBride was eject-
ed for checking -from -behind and
Mark Lynn had a sore back.

the 'AA' qualifier against Listowel
losing 15-11. They were the third
place qualifier from Huron -Perth.
They split matches with Lambton-
Central and a very tough Tillson-
burg Gemini team and lost two

The team played a very entertain-
ing, defensive style of volleyball,
keeping other teams off balance.
