Stephen goalies
get pointers on
making the save
The past two weekends have seen
locals learn more than the basics
HURON PARK - It's the position in hockey we take for granted -
goaltending. We just hope the goalie will always be able to keep the
puck out of the net.
Sometimes the puckstoppers need a Tittle help, the past two week-
ends goalies from the Stephen Township Minor Hockey Association
have received a little help in the form former Vancouver Canucks
goalie Steve McKichan.
Saturday at the second of two straight Saturday morning sessions,
the local goSlies were put through their paces.
"I like to make the save," said seven-year-old Jeff Baker who is on
the local tyke team.
And what happens if one gets by him? -
"You just get up and try again," said Baker.
Kelly Rutten plays net for the Stephen junior girls team and she
says she plays gdal because she likes making the save.
For Gary Sauder it is his second year between the pipes and the
atom goalie said, "you get more ice time," when you are in net.
Kevin Thompson of the peewee team said he liked the shootout
competition that was held and admits his glove is his best defense
against potential goal scorers.
While McKichan couldn't be at the sessions for the entire time, he
had some capable assistants including 15 -year-old Ron Vogel who
plays for the Langton Junior 'D' Thunderbirds.
"A lot of ouF training is mental. Out there (on the ice) wt, teach
them rebotend control and puck sense," said Vogel. •
Stephen Township Minor Hockey Association held a
goalie clinic the past two weekends. Here, tyke goal-
ie Jeff Baker, !eft; helps Kevin Thompson of the lo-
cal peewee team with his pads.
