Hawks set to take on Belmont Bombers
firdt
Veteran goalie Darren Kints, left; is expected to get a lot of
work in net during the playoffs. Sean McCann, right, has re-
gained his scoring touch and could help offensively.
Junior `D' playoffs
EXETER - It will be the Exeter Hawks going up against the Belmont
Bombers in the fust round of the OHA Junior Development League
playoffs.
This weekend when the best -of -seven series opens up in Exeter, the
Hawks will be ready. They have been very hot in the last month and
have a very good chance of knocking off the Bombers and moving on.
"We're playing not too bad right now. They beat us up early and we
played them tougher near the end," said Exeter coach Dave Revington.
In the five regular season meetings of the two teams Belmont won the
first, 9-4 back on October 22 and then six days later it was the Hawks
on top 6-5. The third game went into overtime and then Exeter won the
next two.
Interesting, the two teams haven't locked up since December 23 and a
lot has happened in Exeter since then.
The Hawks have picked their game up and three goalies will be avail-
able for the playoffs. Besides Darren Kints who will likely get the bulk
of the work, Exeter has Brian Knight and recently signed Derek Hog-
garth from Clinton.
"I think Brian realizes the situation. He's content to jump in whenever
he can. It's important to have an extra because Brian goes to York,"
said Revington.
Exeter's top three lines are all capable of scoring goals. They start
with Chris Kennedy, Sean McCann and rookie Jeff Glavin and follow
that up with more offence in Shayne Robinson, Nathan Burns and Mark
Livermore.
The third trio of Nathan Blight, Ray Cousineau and Steve Farquhar
can score but are counted on more for their defensive ability.
When the Hawks go on the powerplay Robinson moves back to the
blueline but that could be a thing of the past as Revington says a new
defenseman from London is on the scene.
What has happened:
in theafiive tines the two teams have met, Exeter has won three of
them aine of the games was determined in overtime.

Exeter wins penalty -filled game with Mt. Brydges
It was a strange one which saw two Mt. Brydges' coaches ejected

EXETER - A couple of weeks
sure can make a difference.
Friday night the Mt. Brydges
Bulldogs came to town to take on
the host Exeter Hawks in OHA Jun-
ior Development League action and
it was the Hawks winning 5-2.
However, the game was filled
with penalties on the Mt. Brydges
side of the scoresheet as they had
several players plus two coaches
ejected by referee Steve Miller.
Fourteen days earlier in Exeter,
the Bulldogs played a much more
disciplined game and were edged
5-4 by the Hawks in overtime.
Saturday night the Hawks lost 6-
5 to the host Port Stanley Lakers in
their final regular season game.
The Toss to the Lakers stopped
the Hawks longest winning streak
of the year at five.
Big difference: "They played a
lot different than the last time.
They got the referee involved and it
went downhill," said Exeter coach
Dave Revington about Friday's
game with the Bulldogs.
Once again the hosts got off to a
slow start and it was 1-1 after 20
minutes but they went up 4-1 after
two periods. Scoring for Exeter on
the night were Shayne Robinson,
Nathan Burns, Sean McCann, Na-
than Blight and Gavin Snell.
Blight has really improved his
game the last couple of week's and
has earned a leftwing spot on the
third line with high -scoring right-
winger Ray Cousineau and centre
Steve Farquhar.
"I would expect to see him there,
he's really stepped up," said Rev-
ington pleased with the veteran's
performance.
Also playing well the past few
games has been veteran defense -
man Mark Lynn who has been hit-
ting harder, staying with his man
and getting a few quality shots on
net.
Friday's game began to get out of
hand in the first period when Mt.
Brydges Brad Carroll dropped his
glove and invited Jamie Cornish to
a fight. The inviteee won this bat-
tle.

Lucan take on Seaforth
Quarter -final series to start Wednesday
By Fred Groves

LUCAN - Forget about the fact the Lucan Irish went 0-1 1-1 in their
first 12 games, they certainly have.
What started out as a dismal season has tumed into one which could
just possibly see the Irish contend for the OHA Junior Development
League title.
In their last 10 games of the regular season, the Irish went 9-1-0 and
outscored their opponents 54-31.
Tonight when they face off in Game One of the west division quar-
tet -finals against the Seaforth Centenaires, hockey fans shouldn't look
for anything different out of the Irish than what they've seen in the last
10 games.
"We kind of remind them of the adversity we went through," said
Irish coach Scott Bogart of his team's performance early in the season.
Straight ahead, put -the -puck in the net hockey. That's their style and
they've certainly got the offensive tools to do it.
A year ago the Centenaires swept Exeter in four straight, did the
same to the Irish and then were eliminated in the division final by
eventual two-time defending OHA champs Mitchell.
"The key to the whole thing is (Dave) Nahrgang and (Tim) Swan,"
said Seaforth manager Gregor Campbell of the netminders. "In the last
couple of weeks our goaltending has been real steady."
In last year's playoffs the Cents rallied around veteran goalie Dana
Duskocy. They could jump on the back of Nahrgang or Swan.
Between the pipes, Bogart said,"(Steve) Watson will start and we'll
go from there."
"Team defence, that's what's going to win. There's no secret about
that," added Bogart who says his team. has no injured players.
Campbell said his team is injury -free and due to past injuries, there

doesn't seem to be any set line combinations. That's where the Irish
could benefit as they are pretty well set with their trios.
Up front the Irish will attack with the lines of Greg DePrest-Steve
Hudson -Steve Matthews, George Stephens -Scott Riddell -Jeremy Je-
mec, Trevor Emms-Mike Robb -Travis Stinchcombe, Christian Criel-
Dave Lindberg -Dan Jenken.
"We know what Lucan's got, they've been to the division final six of
the last seven years," said Campbell.
Seaforth is having problems off the ice and it is even questionable,
due to lack of volunteers, if there will even be a team iced next season.
"The team is totally isolated from that," said Campbell.
Who to look for to lead the Centanires offence?
Jason Murray, just coming off an injury, Steve McInally and Steve
Geiger will all be there to hopefully fill the net.
What has happened:
In the five times the two teams haL e met, Lucan has won four of
those including an 8-1 blowout at home on February 1.
Sept. 30 - Lucan 3 at Seaforth 6
Nov. 19 - Seaforth 2 at Lucan (Ilderton) 5
Nov. 23 - Seaforth 3 at Lucan 4
Nov. 25 - Lucan 6 at Seaforth 2
Feb. 1 - Seaforth 1 at Lucan 8
In the five games, the Irish have outscored the Cents 26-14.

Irish end season
with their ninth
straight victory
MT. BRYDGES - What a way to end the regular season.
The Lucan Irish who had been in last place for a good part of the OHA
Junior Development League west division have bounced all the way up
to fourth place which they will take into the quarter -finals.
Saturday night in Mt. Brydges, the Irish hung on to a 7-4 lead to beat
the host Bulldogs 7-6. It was the ninth straight win for the Irish who
haven't lost since January 22.
The very balanced scoring attack was led by Trevor Emms, Mike
Robb and Greg DePrest who each had one goal and a pair of assists.
Also connecting were Keith Robtion, George Stephens, Jeremy Jemec
and Steve Matthews all who added an assist.
Lucan finishes` die regular season with a 21-18-1 record and just two
points back of third place finishing Exeter.

Last Wednesday night in Lucan, the Irish and the Hawks battled to a 2-

Exeter 8, North Middlesex 2
Last Wednesday night in a pen-
alty -filled game in Parkhill. the

part to the four -point effort of Fa-
ruqhar as he scored once and set up
two more.
Also connecting in the well-
balanced offensive attack were
Mark Livermore who netted a pair,
Robinson. Cousineau, Blight and
Burns.
Exeter 5, Mitchell 0
Jumping into a 4-0 first period
lead. Exeter recorded their first
shutout win of the season last Tues-
day night against visiting Mitchell.
McCann netted two goals with sin-
gles from Robinson, Blight and

two first period goals.

egg between the pipes, his first of
the season.
