Bad weather conditions

GRAND BEND - Bone -numbing cold, limited
visibility and a very small crowd didn't hamper the
spirits of John Kehoe and dozens of other studded
motorcycle ice racers from competing.
Saturday morning, as the wind ripped across the
track at the Grand Bend Speedway Park, Kehoe, the
top ranked racer in the speedway division, prepared
his motorcycle.
As part of the ninth annual Grand Bend Winter
Carnival, a group of motorcycle enthusiasts were
presenting what they called, 'Fire on Ice'.
Kehoe and the others really didn't have much
choice but to race as Saturday's and this Sunday's
races are the only Canadian National events this
winter.
"There are only two nationals and they are both
here. With the weather, once it's gone, it's gone," he
said of the opportunity to race on the ice.
Prior to the start of Saturday's races. organizers
spent hundreds of hours getting the track ready and
although it,was cold enough on the weekend, the
warm weather in the past didn't help.
"Since they had the thaw, the ice has gone down
from 16 inches to four to six inches and maybe Tess
than that in certain places," said Kehoe. "There are
some serious concerns because these bikes dig up a
lot of ice."
The spectators that did brave the elements on the
weekend did see some interesting races as riders
had to not only battle the ice but the visibility as
well.
"I think the way the winds are, visibility will be
maintained for the most part," said Kehoe.
There were many different classes out on the
track from 250 and 600 cc expert to ATV and
speedway. Different class means a different kind of
bike.
"It (speedway bike) burns methanol. It has no
breaks, no suspension and no gears. It goes from
zero to 60 in approximately six seconds. We enter
the turn in full throttle," said Kehoe.
He is serious about his racing and while there is
limited time spent battling the cold and the ice,
summertime is when
Kehoe does most of
his racing.
"Our racing is
done in Ontario and
Quebec mostly on
horse tracks. My
seasons starts May
20 in Ontario."
All the raceson
the weekend were
sanctioned by the
Canadian Mo-
torcycle Association who were the ones putting up
the prize money.
"It's a controlled purse and it's not nearly as high
as it could be," said Kehoe.
Races on Sunday were cancelled because of the
bad weather but organizer are looking forward to
seeing a lot of spectators in Grand Bend this week-
end.
Racing is scheduled to continue this weekend be-
ginning at 11:30 a.m. following the registration and
warmups.
"It goes from
zero to 60 in
six seconds.
We enter the
turn in full
throttle."
It was tough goingduring
the 'Fire On Ice' races Sat-
urday in Grand Bend.

ly in the third period and couldn't
put them in," said South Huron
coach Dave Cox. We sort of died.
it was kind of disappointing."

played a tough four quarters against
host F.E. Madill last Wednesday
but came up short 64-58.
The score was tied 30-30 at the
half and although down by five
points after three quarters, the Pan-
thers came back quick and tied it
up again just 26 seconds into the fi-
nal quarter.
Centre Paul Gregus and forward
Christian Stuckless led the way in
scoring while Heath Palen and
Greg Geoffrey came off the bench
