Whether the heart is attacked or the brain (stroke), the causes are most often the same. When the vessels carrying blood to your heart or brain become too restricted (atherosclerosis) you can suffer a heart attack or a stroke. Or when a blood clot lodges in an artery and interferes with the blood supply to either heart or brain, you can suffer a heart attack or stroke. And either can strike in the prime'of life, killing or paralysing in a matter of minutes. Even though our research has made tremendous progress over the years and vastly reduced the incidence of heart disease and stroke, we still have a lot of work to do: heart disease and stroke are still Canada's major health problem.
