Stacey's Christmas
By Josh Lealess
McGillivray Public School
Stacey is an 1 I year old girl who lives in Windsor,
Ontario. She has a little sister who is constantly bug-
ging her and .wrecking her things. Stacey was so excit-
ed because it was only one week•until Christmas and
she was out of school for two weeks..
One bright morning Stacey went outside to play in
the snow- before her little sister, Allison woke up.
When she got out she saw that her friend Luke was
waiting for her "Want to build it `nowfort Stacey:'"
asked Luke. "What's the point when Allison is. juSt
• going to.wreck it'?" Stacey said as she picked up some
snow and rolled - it into a hall with a sneaky smile on
her face: As 'soon, as.Luke realized what Stacey was
doing he did the same. Then Stacey started to make •
more and more snowballs. Just, then Luke threw *a
snowball at Stacey. It hil her right in the race. Before
Luke had enough .time to make another snowball
' Stacey, was firing snowballs at him. As quickly as he
could Luke ran around to the side of Stacey's house.
When he got there he started making snowballs: Luke
was skilled at -this. l'or he had lots of experience. When
'he was -making a snowhatl. he heard someone coining
'behind him, so•he turned around and without even
looking he hit: Mrs_ Tides in -the face: "Stacey;'
exclaimed Mrs. Tides (who at the lime was only wear-
ing a night.gowni.•"Yes mother?".'said. Stacey in a
small. frightened -voice. "Did.you hit me with -that
snowball ?"
"No.'. .he said. "It -was him..Luke." ,' • '
"That's it Luke: get out of..here, you've caused
enough trouble fir the day" •
When Mrs. Tides had lett. Luke invited Stacey to his
house to playa game of -checkers. When Stacey got
home she went straight to her room: She had lost five
game; of checkers. That's the worst she had -ever dune..
As soon as she got in her room she noticed that her lit-
tle sister was playing .with her cars. Stacey had to share
her room with her sister, She thought this was the
worst Thing. that could over happen: When -She came in
her ! .1r;om today_ there was one thing that really
stood out - it was that .her most prized• possession was
• broken: Her d U : s'head was torn off and her two legs
and arm: were scattered all over her bedroom. Stacey
-went-furious with rage. anger and frustration. She ran
downstai?scrying and howling at the top of her lungs_.
Mr, • Tides came to see what the problem was. "Dad
look what she -dia. The little brat tore'Snuffy to.
'oeces,". Sta..cy.said_hetween sniffs. (Snuffy was
doll's name.) Mr. Tides tried to calm _Stacey down but -
Stacey was so happy that tomorrow was Christmas
(actually it was only three hours away). Stacey was
jumping around the house singing songs. "I'll go get
the mail;" .said Mr. Tides in, a not so happy voice.
Allison stepped in the room and said, "Nobody likes
me, nobody cares about me. nobody will play with
me."
"Well! What a speech! Yon could be in public
speaking sometime." replied Mr. Tides. "When she's
old enough." Stacey said with a laugh "Baby". "Stacey
that was not nice. Say sorry to your little sister," Mrs.
Tides said: -
"Sorry." said Stacey in a low mumble. "So who's up
for peanut. brittle?" asked Mr. Tides who was famous
for his peanut brittle. All the teachers liked it at'
Stacey's school. Or that's what they said: There were
three shouts for the peanut brittle. In a little while
Stacey had. to go to bed. 11 you're a kid and you get a
• .lot of toys at Christmas then you'll know how hard it is
to get to -sleep.
The. next morning Stacey got up at 5 a.m. Of course
.her little sister had already been in her parents room
for about 15 minutes. Her parents were not too happy
about being up so early:so they were pretty grumpy.
Stacey came running out of her room yelling with joy.
Stacey Lound in her stocking a pair of socks (which she
•did not like). two big candy canes,.a knitting set and
she lOund her doll -Snuffy all stitched together. Because
it was so messy Stacey figured that Allison had done
- the stitching, but she .was still really happy. She went
up to. Stacey._ almost gave her a kiss, but then she gave
her a hug. Next. Stacey. Mr. Tides and Mrs. Tides went
" into the living room and there were piles of presents.
.about ten for each person. Allison came -running out.
. when she saw all the presents under the tree' she
stopped and yelled •"I get all the presents."
"That probably woke up a few neighbors." remarked
Mr. Tides.
• Every .present was opened -except one. which. had
Stacey's name on it. When Stacey opened it. she found
a -letter that had printing on it. It read: 0/0011c/uCm-..

it was hopeless:
After getting over that (which took a half a week).
Stacey .was tilled with the` joy- of Christmas. • "Stacey
get the door. My hands are all greasy." Mrs. Tides said
-as she was cutting** turkey for the dinner that night.
"Why is that little Stacey?" exclaimed. Stacey's Aunt
Mary.. This is the worst time of Christmas tor. Stacey
hccause every aunt squeezed her cheeks and gave her
great hip -kisses (one aunt even •had a beard. that felt
quite weird). Her mothersaid she could go up in her
room and try to fix her doll or stay down here and get
smothered with kisses. When Stacey got upstairs she
found out that her sister was there. ;'Stacey will you
play checkers with me?" "Allison you don't know how
ter play .:heckers and 'if you•did. why should [when
you wrecked Snuffy'.'" replied Stacey.

After that Stacey went to Luke's house and they
talked about what to name the puppy. They.came up

Easy Apple Dumplings
Remember -the smell of hot apple dumplings in brown
sugar sauce. How my dad would rave, about the taste!
Somehow itdon't find the time to make the old-fashioned
dumpling much so when 1 found this recipe in Company's
Coming Desserts. l adapted it to my memories"and VOILA!
Easy, quick and just as good..Erjoy!
Dumpling: •• ,
2 cups all purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1/2 cup butter or margarine
2/3 cup milk;
Filling:`
Cinnamon (to taste)
. 10 apples (pealed and ,grated)
6 tbsp white sugar
Sauce:
. 2 cups brown sugar
4 cups hot water -
2 tbsp. butter or margarine
2 tsp vanilla
• Put first 4 ingredients in bowl and cut till crumbly. Add
milk and form 2 balls. Roll out on wax paper with a touch
of flour to 7x12 inches.
• Sprinkle lightly with cinnamon. Generously cover with
apple. Sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon again. Starting
with long side, roll like a jelly roll. Cut into 1-1/2.- 2 inch
pieces. Lay cut side up in 9x13 pan.
• Bring sauce to a boil and pour over slices. Bake in 350
deg. F. oven for about 40-50 minutes (nicely browned)
(The original recipe uses 1/2 the sauce but I like more
sauce, and a moister dumpling).
