Times Advocate, 1997-11-26, Page 5On the Street • by Jim Beckett • The gift of time can really benefit Joanne Dinncy'of Country • Flowers believes one of the most valuable things anyone has tci • offer is their time. • 'She isn't out to save the World and she stressed she is not looking•for publicity for herself or her husiness....all she wants to do is try.and get more people to think about how they i:an make a contribution to their 'community. "Investing time -gets the donor involved" • Many people believe the only way to help is to donate money . ' 10 one cause or another_ Dinney says this. is important but with a little thought there are many equally important ways to make-. a difference. - Investing a.little time gets the- -'l donor far more involved than writing a cheque ever will. it .gives an individual a chance to h.►ve a "hands on".involvement: One example is something Bruce Shaw is -going to he doing -tont few hours a week during the' busy Christmas season. , He will he making deliveries and donating whateyer he earns-ui his favorite charity. Dinney will also add to Shaw's contribution . s itha donation .of her own. , ,1 Shaw, Iike, hundreds of others 'in the T -A readership area., has the time. Northally he would have just gone ahead with the deliveries withoutany fanfare because he believes the hcYst eontributionsrak those whiyh are done without recognition: 1 Of course. Dinney.lbyes the idea and feels strongly that a little-. .publicity in this area could convince Others to invest -a bifida their time and'make a positive contribution theinselves. "Getting • involved could he fun." she says., . • "Take the time to think about a way we as individuals can help out in the community and pretty soon the multiplieveffect will kick. in and the benefits will really . add up." • Flower delivery could be an ideal way to generate another benefit to the community. , . "As the delivery person is already at dozens of -homes each week; w<iuldn't'this be a great . time to solicit a donation for the loud hank". Dinney adds. There's no extra work, it's just a really effective time to take advantage of.. an -opportunity to help. • • Many people in our community are helping already using whatever time they have to assist uth:rs. One example 1 heard of, recently is an excellent example,. A young family has been devastated with a serious illness where constant medical attention is required. Neighbors have pitched in with a variety of ways to show they care. . Gardening. snow removal. lawn cutting. child care. etc. etc. are all; things practically anyone can contribute. All it takes is time. Annual parade Exeter's annual Salta Claus Parade is this Saturday at noon. The parade will be followed by the Optimist Christmas Party at the South Huron Rec. Centre • beginning at 1:30 p.m. - Children will have it chance to meet Santa and get a free candy . hag.
