Pearen. 52, is -charged with theft Ewer • $1,000 in- connection • with over $150,000 in thefts from Grand, Bend United. Assistant Crown at- torney .Mary Nethery alleges . Pear en stole the money between 1987• and 1992 and deposited the money from cheques from the church's ac- count to her•account. Opening testimony came from Rev. Colin Stover last Monday. Problems with the church's • fi- nances surfaced -M.1992 when Sin-. yet was summoned to the hank and told outstanding cheques would create an overdraft in the church's • account and there wouldn't he enough money to over his salary. Nethery said: Stover said he couldn't figure out why. the church's _finances' were -sagging. after he -watched at- tendance grow since. his' arrival `from Saskatchewan in 1989. "Basically she said hills. were not getting paid. the congregation was 01)1 giving enough to cover the.. hills." he said Pearen told him: leaving him with the impression he . • • had a parish of "poor givers:" That received some chuckles. from court spectators. including some Grand Bend United Church'members. • In January 1990 Stover asked Pearen why there was no auditor's signature on the'church's annual ft- nancial •statement. He said Pearen told him' the auditor didn't sign the statement because he did the work for 'free. and didn't want his name used. • Stover -.said Pearen repeatedly told him in .1990 and 1991 the au-.. •ditor's name had to be kept secret to protect the nun from others who would want :he same free service. Pearen 'also told him he was not meeting enough people in the com- munity and his semtons weren't. hitting the mark: - Stover said he shelved asking for a housing allowance for his family to Lind quieter accommodation ilub side the church manse located•.a block from Grand Bend's down- town. He asked for the allowance during his first. summer in Grande Bend because of the noise and beer bottles and used condoms he con- stantly found on -his front -yard. He said he broke down and•cried when evidence came to light that Pearen might • -be taking money 'froth the church. :Up to that point Stover considered Pearen _to he a - trusted friend who even helped him • plan a, surprise birthday_ party lir his wife. 1 thought of all the things we had -dome together." Stover said. "It was just devastating.' Stover first considered there we're holes in Pearen's explanations for the church's poor- financial situa- tion when he saw a computer print- out that showed' the church • hadn't sent any money to• the United Church of Canada's Toronto-based Mis- sions In Services Fund during 1990. He said Pearen told •him it was a "book- keeping error." When the -same is- sue come up • the next ' year. Stover said he started to doubt Pearen's word.: • On March 3. 1992 Stover re- ceived a fetter from Missions In -Services officials that said his :church had not contnliuted to the fund in 1990. or 1991. Stover said he thought .56.755 had been sent front .his ehurch to the fund in 1991. Stover made the decision to suspend _Pearen's• treasurer signing privileges the next day. On March 5, 1992 Stover said'he went to the thg'Grand Bend Bank of Montreal where he. was shown 10 cheque~ totalling 5(.668 drawn on the church's chequing account and signed by Pearen. Stove broke cri light that might money Grand Bend.United was the.only church in the•' Huron -Perth ares- , hytery not to contribute to the Mis-. sions fund during the three-year pe- riod. ,ending in • 1991, former presbytery member Rev. George.. Phillips said •during his testimony ' on Wednesday. Philips was one of two church officials who signed the • letter sent to Stover • about not receiving any money for the • Missions fund. • • • United Church of Canada accounting manager Harry -Kel- ly confirmed 'Grand Bend -United hadn't sent any funds- to the Missions fund • from 1989-91 and the•church had sent $9.665 and 513.554 in 1992 and 1993 respectively. Defence lawyer Dawson Fletcher asked Kelly during cross examina- tion xamina tion if a search was made for any post-dated . cheques in the metal cash box where they are kept at the.. head office in, March 1992. Kelly said he wasn't aware of such a search being carried out. . - Non -publishable evidence ad- missibility hearings were carried out on Thursday and Friday and the trial continues this week. - With files from Dan McCaffery of the Sarnia Observer. r said'he diown and ed when .came to Pearen be taking, from the church.
