stain glass images.
The Canada Post Corporation se-
lected Madonna and Child as their
motif because they, see the image
as an artistic expression used
throughout Canada and it endures
in both secular and sacred Ca-
nadian art as an expression of hope
and renewal, of creation and nur-
turing and of the continuity of life.
Stained glass is a Byzantine in-
vention used in early Medieval
times 'and is closely associated with
Gothic Cathedrals. This is one of
the reasons stained glass images of
the Madonna and Child were' se-
lected as part of the Canada Post
Corporation's 1997 Christmas
stamp collection. -
Also chosenfor -the Christmas
stamps were Guido Nincheri who
'will -feature a motif from the Holy
Rosary Church tin Vanco}tver on
the,45 cent stamp. and Toronto na-
tive Ellen'Simon who was selected
to display her stained glass window
design on the 52 cent stamp.
