Huron Tourism Association may create
historical walkway in St. Joseph
By Chantal! Van.Raay
T -A Reporter
ST. JOSEPH - Last January, the
Huron Tourism Association (HTA)
was. established, and already they
have massive plans for the future of
St. Joseph by elaborating .on its
past.•
Their first major project for the
HTA is to form a historical society
and a heritage walkway in. St. Jo-
seph Memorial Park. They believe
the village .has a unique cultural
and historical base, and wish to dis-
play these traits_ to the public.
The five -acre park is located
along Highway #21 between Grand
Bend and Bayfield. The HTA. has
decided to lay a cobblestone walk-
way through the park, with signs
'containing historical information
on them, at different spots through-
out the trail.
HTA member Joe Wooden has
written a book on the history of the
first French settlers in St. Joseph,.
and at a recent HTA meeting
praised the area as an ideil spot. for
a historic walking trail.
"Ontario is full of them," he said,
adding, "but this is one of the more
interesting spots."
Wooden shared some of the his-
tory behind St. Joseph. . .
Narcisse Cantin built St. Joseph
in 1897, at the same . time for-
mulating a vision in his mind that
would link Lake. Huron with Lake

Erie. To do this, Cantin fundraised
to build a canal from St. Joseph to
Port Stanley, creating a waterway
to .open the Great Lakes to major
world ports. .
Cantin almost had his dream mas-
tered when the First World War'
broke out and he was forced to
abandon his vision.' So, the water-
way that could have led St. Joseph'
to one of the major shipping and
North American trade ports in the'
world, never came to be.
Cantin's grandson Napoleon still
lives in St. Joseph. Napoleon col-
lects historical items of St. Joseph
and the surrounding area.
Lakewood Nursery representative
Jody LaPorte, who grew up in St.
Joseph, believes erecting signage
throughout the trail is a great way
to inform The public about St. Jo-
seph's archives. -
"With' this signage we'll give
them a. taste of what the -archives
have to offer, and it will give us a
little more pride in the area: St. Jo-
seph's is a small spot but it has a
large and interesting history." The
nursery is doing the design .of the
park.
In order for the HTA to undergo
such a project, they need to raise
money through the community.
They decided one of the best ways
to to this would be to have Spon-
sors for each of the,.. signs. Also,
people could buy a brick or a bench
and have their names engraved on
it.
They, believe there is enough sup-
port in the community to make this -
project feasible, said HTA member.
Joan Karstens.
Goderich Museum director Claus
Breede sees the project as an im-
portant historical tool, but em-
phasized vandalism does occur, and
since the community will be pull-
ing money from their own pockets
to pay for the signage, they have to
make sure the signs will stay where
they are.
Breede said vandal -proof meta-
- signs ate available, but they
are not cheap. However, since the
signs are almost impossible' to van-
dalize, they would probably be a'
worthwhile purchase.
"The signs are vandal -proof," he
said, "But they're not theft -proof."
When purchasing a second iden-
tical sign with the first sign, the
cost is cut almost in half, Breede

He said creating a park with six
'stations including signs, benches, a
cobblestone walkway, and main-
tenance could exhaust a lot of time
and effort.
"It isn't free, it tent cheap. it
isn't easy. But it's worthwhile do-
ing," Breede said.
The ' HTA is .also - considering
starting a historical: society in the
village.
At the Oct.' 27 HTA meeting Oct.
27, Ontario Historical Society ex-
ecutive director Dorothy Dunkan
discussed some of the implications
of creating a historical society.
"The historical society • was
formed in the 19th century because
people were worried buildings were
vanishing,archives were being lost
and children were losing their his-
tory.
istory. This is very much about what •
we're worried about today," she
said.
• She added that at that time only
seven historical societies existed in
Ontario. Today, • there are about
525, and the numbers continue to
grow.
