Page 10 Times -Advocate, November 5, 1997 COMMUNITY We're still learning Students are still given the opportunity to play and learn during the teachers strike. Teachers are helping teachers during the strike by holding a day care for students at the Legion. Pictured from left are Jessica Holmes, 4, Lauren Jinks, 7, Maggie Jinks, 7 and Hi- lary Holmes, 5. Women's Ministries make donations to several people -GRAND BEND - The Women's Ministries of the`Exeter Pentecostal Tabernacle held a meeting at the home of Idena Desjardine in Grand Bend, October30 at 2 p.m. Jenny Kipfer presided over the service. Idena Desjardine accompa- nied the hymns on the piano. Ten members answered the roll call. The group agreed to send money to Rev. Ray and Betty Faulkner in Sri Lanka; to Marilyn Bush; to Rev. and Mrs. Alex Strong; to Janette Tinlin for Christmas; and to Palliative Care. Wanda McLaren read an article about Janette Tinliri, Marilyn Bush and Don Krohn. Thank you cards for donations were read. Lunch was provided by Idena Desjardine, Shirley Prouty and Eva Brophy. Blue Water couple celebrates 55 years of marriage ZURICH - The residents of Blue Water Rest Home enjoyed "National Car Day" on October 27. The game "Name That Car" was played and many were able to name •the Herpmohile, 1950 Studebaker Champion, 1933 Oldsmobile Coupe and' the 1948 Hudson truck. The residents were shown a picture of a, car, then given a couple clues and they were able to guess the make. The residents reminisced about some of the features of the vintage machines. They talked about the different tsars they had owned over the years and their first car ride. The Grade 5 Buddies from St. oniface School were unable to isit the Home on October 28 because of negotiations between the teachers and the Ontario gov- ernment on Bill 160 had resulted in a teachers' strike. Rev. Bob. Peeples of Exeter, a retired United Church minister con- ducted Thursday afternoon chapel service. Communion was held in the absence cf Fr. Wronski who is enjoying a holiday in his homeland of Poland.. Bingo was held Thursday evening in the auditorium in order that the residents could enjoy visit- ing with the ghosts and goblins on the route throughout the communi- ty on Halloween night. Friday afternoon the auditorium was decorated with black and orange balloons and spider websand the residents played a game of pumpkin toss, a seed spitting con- test and played a quiz called Halloween Teasers. Each resident received a witch's hand which con- sisted of a clear plastic surgeon's glove filled withpopcorn and orange and black candies marking the -witch's fingernails. The resi- dents wore Halloween masks and Sipped on apple juice. Friday evening residents' Kurt Exeter Legion News Remembrance Services The,Government of Canada has declared the period beginning - Novemher 5 and ending November 11, 1997 shall he known as Veterans' Week. The Exeter Branch #167 of TheRoyal Canadian Legion would like to let the citizens of Exeter and arca know of the upcoming plans for our Remembrance Services.We will he having our Cenotaph Service on Sunday November 9.- All those who are taking part in this service should be at the Legion by n) 9:25 am, as the parade will loiup at 9:30 am. inFrothe Legion we will march to the Cenotaph for the laying of the wreaths and the Memorial Service. From the Cenotaph. the parade will march to the Exeter United Church to takepart in their service. Alter the Church service, we return to the Legion Hall, where a lunch will he provided for all participants. We would ask that all those tak- ing part. dress fiir the weather. On November 11. Remembrance Day, we have a full slate of school visits to take part in their services to remind the students of what Canadians served and achieved at home and overseas during WWI. WWii. The Korean War and the many peacekeeping operations around the world. They will also give recognition to those Canadians who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country in the name of peace and freedom. Artist Harry Burke has'provided portraits of all those who died from this area during these times and these are on permanent display in the Mair! Hall at our Branch. The School visits start with South Huron District High School at 9:0O am, Exeter Public School at 10:00 am, Precious Blood School at 10:45 arm. Ushorne Central at 1I:(X) am, McCurdy Public School at 1:30 pm, Stephen Central School and Mount Carmel'School at 2:30 pm. We hope that these visits will he possible. in light of the current situation in the education arca. However if not. we ask that the students "Take Time to Remember". We appreciate the work they have planned. the efforts of their posters and poems for this day. At 4:(x) pm we will have a service at the Exeter Villa for the resi- dents there. 'At night we will he having our Remembrance Day •Banquet at the Legion Hall. with Claus Breede as our guest speaker. Once again we would like thank all the citizens for supporting our annual Poppy Campaign. Gebel, Vivian Fremlin and Harold (Scotty) and Mae Fox handed out chocolate bars to the 35-40 trick - or -treaters who visited the home. On Saturday afternoon the resi- dents watched a wildlife film pro- duced by National Geographic. On Sunday residents Philippa Steckle, Mabel Kyle, Clarence Gascho, Mabel Riley,Beatrice Rader and Seleda Steckle attended morning service at Zurich Mennonite Church. • Farr,ily.and friends, along with many residents attended an after- noon tea in the auditorium of the Home in celebration of Margaret and Harold Jones' 55th wedding anniversary. Approximately' 125 people extended best wishes to the couple. The family had decorated the room in preparation and_cake and ice cream was served to the guests. A photo album was avail- able for the guests to peruse depict- ing the couple's married years. Resident Mabel Gilfillan was off to the lake 10 congratulate her granddaughter Shannon Lee. (Regier) on her recent marriage. Shannon, a former employee at Blue Water Rest Home, moved to Calgary in the spring. married in Florida in the summer, and this is her first trip home as a married woman. Welcome to Sigval (Val) Bernard of Grand Bend who is a new resident at the Home. Tenants of - Maplewoods Apartments enjoyed their noon meal at Blue Water Rest Horne consisting of roast pork,. salads, apple pie and cheese. Tenants Mary Dickinson. Ila O'Rourke, Anna Erb, Louise Hayter. Blanche Bechard, Meda O'Brien, Vera Shantz, Verda Baechler, Helen and Lloyd Otterbein; ina Neeh and Reta Snyder were served by Auxiliary volunteers'. Mary Gingerich and Gladys Gingerich. The residents watched the movie "Gordie The Talking Pig" in the afternoon. The residents look forward to Bible Study and the Auxiliary November 4, pianist Hugh Harper November -5, organist Art Coker November 7, the Auxiliary Bazaar 2. 3:30, Nov. 8; 'Bowling and exercising their right to vote November 10; a trip to Masonville November 12, the Otterbeins November 13 and "Tacky Day" November 14. On November 9. 2 to 4 p.m., is an Open House for Pearl Miller who is celebrating 90 years.
