There is no such thing as "prescription refills
for life." All prescriptions should be reviewed by
your doctor periodically, even for chronic drugs
like thyroid or epilepsy drugs. After the review,
have your doctor write refills on your prescrip-
tion to last until the next visit. Medication re-
views are an important part of a good healthcare program.
A new drug to treat obesity will soon be coming on the U.S. mar-
ket (later in Canada). It's called "orlistat" and is being touted as
a "fat -blocker". It works by reducing the amount of fat absorbed
by about 30%. Combined with lifestyle changes, the drug can
help obese people lose weight.
November is Diabetes Month. Many Canadians have diabetes
and don't know it. Diabetes greatly increases the risk of hyperten-
sion, stroke and diseases of the heart, eyes, nerves and kidneys.
if diabetes goes undiagnosed, it can cause damage to nearly all
body organs and can lead to death.
Some symptoms of diabetes are excessive thirst, frequent urina-
tion, blurred vision, irritability and confusion. These symptoms
can result from an elevated blood sugar level. Check with your
doctor if you are concerned.
