isn't as despondent as -many people
might think over losing everything
in the fire. though he was wearing
the same clothes he had worn on
Thursday.
"A lot of the pictures, are still.
good and the neighbors have been
great." he said. "I'd like to thank.
everybody that's helped out."

Public express their views on Bill 160
or Continued from front page
Parent John Vanderburgt had a
captide audience, when he said
"Teachers talk abut the manipula-
tion of the government btlt parents
feel -they are being manipulated by
both sides." •
He was also concerned about the
teachers being out of the classroom.
"If kids are the big concern in this
issue. the teachers should be in the
'school right now. The government
has said they are willing to nego-
tigte anything in Bill 160: The
teachers have replied with five
items that they want to discuss.
Why go through "a week of being
on strike? Stay in class and nego-
tiate the five points."
Nancy. Michielsen questioned the
need to fight the bill's change of
nop-certified personnel being al-
lowed in the classroom. -
"We must weigh the difference
between non -certified and non-
qualified. Just because you' do not
have the degree or diploma does
not mean you are not qualified."
Lorne Rideout, principal of Sea -
forth Public School replied to Mi-
chielsen's statement saying the
problem was not with non -certified
staff. The problems lie with Bill
160's lack of designation of sub-
jects that non -certified staff will
teach..

• During the evening, parents ex-
pressed their frustrations of being
misinformed and not knowing who
to believe. They also commented'ors
the need for a labor union to help
out with the teachers' strike and the
need for some accountability 'of'
teachers within the system.
Ron Anderson , and Dr. David
Hodder, candidatesfor the Huron
Perth District School Board #8
spoke to the group about education.
"The government can't legislate
reform: Teachers and parents have
to be involved," Anderson said. '
Hodder added, "Education be-
' longs to people and 'they should
vote on it locally. With Bill 160 im-
plemented, it could be a political
tool."
The meeting ended with Deb
Lord. School Advisory Chair at Ste-
phen Central School questioning
the timing of the Public Forum.
"Why was this informative meet-
ing not scheduled three weeks ago
before the strike erupted''," she
asked, adding, "As parents, we ask
the Teacher's Federation to sit
down together with' the Ministry of

leading. Bill 160 will disempower
school boards. it's a massive
change," he explained.
"This is a very difficult time. We
don't have a god guy and a had
guy. Were the teachers to roll over,
in a year from now in negotiations,
they'd be toothless. Teachers may
'be the last defense' against the gov-
ernment," claimed Hodder.
All three candidates said they
firmly believed in the public educa-
tion system and although it is going
through changes at the current time,
the system should continue to meet
the challenges of educating stu-
dents and giving them the tools for
the future. -
