Springhouse Shingles sells metal roofing to building contractors out of the Andex building on Thames Rd. ' Though Webb said he- has only sold their roofing to Ontario con- tractors so far, he has fielded in- quiries from throughout North America. in fact, during his 'inter- view with the T -A, Webb filed in a contractor from Louisiana on their products. But why metal roofing? Webb admitted his products are twice as expensive as asphalt shin- gles, Springhouse Shingles cost about half as much as other metal roofing and could last for the life- time, of; a home. And . unlike as- phalt, wood and other roofing ma- terials, metal requires little Maintenance other than a coat of paint- every ..10 years, although higher quality finishes come with,a 30 year warranty. • Operating out of Andex (a -metal sheeting factory) since January,' Webb said the "alliance" between the twp businesses is working out fine. "Our . products really comple- mens each other," he said. The idea' for Springhouse was hatched by Webbspartner. Ji>ir 'Nicholson of Moncton, Ont., three, years ago: People were expressing their dissatisfaction with asphalt roofing over its relatively short, lifespan, its high amount of main-. tenance and its environmental im- --_pacL_Webb_and Nichoisop decided to take advantage of that op "There was a demand for an al- ternative to the more disposable type of product," Webb said. "As consumers, we are getting tired of the performance of asphalt shin- gles." He added one interesting fact: an U.S. study found out 10 per cent of the total volume of waste making it Steel training: Springhouse' Shingles co-owner Paul Webb in front of a steel shingle .in stallation 'training apparatus: Springhouse's metal roofing systems are providing another option for residential ,rodfing • contractors to offer theirctis-. tomthrs. , , to Ian'dfill is old asphalt. "It's proven itself. All we've done is took the probability of. steel and combined it with mod- ern paint finishes, sealants and today's technology." • While rural communities are comfortable with the idea of • metal roofing, cracking the ur-. ban market has proven to be a much harder nut: City folk don't have the background ru'ral.. com- munities have since many barns, implement sheds and farm hous- es feature. m_ etal roofs. Asphalt became the market hog over the '60s, '70s and '80s when most . cities were in their biggest building .booms and as- phalt was the cheapest and easi- est roofing material. Webb smiled when asked if metal 'roofs are noisy ,Firing a thunderstorm and said that is the most commonly asked question. "It really isn't," he said. Below .. the metal shingles are an air- space, the roof deck, attic space, insulation, a vapor layer, plastic sheeting, dry wall and usually plaster that muffles any drum- ming sound. • If customers want to spend •a little extra, they can pass up painted metal shingles that come in nine colors for copper, zinc or eycn stainless steel shingles. While metal roofing is more expensive than asphalt (though fess expensive than slate and,ce- ramic tile) and a little more dif- ficult' to lay down, Webb said why go the extra mile to invest in high quality, low maintenance windows, doors, and siding witli-, houses, have metal roofs. your portunity. the foundation — the roof? • - OLIDAY .
