Biddulph historians are going to mark the township's 150th anniversary in a big way — 750 pages worth, that is. • _ The historical hard cover book Pioneers to the Present will document Biddulph Township's history from when the area was first surveyed in 1831 to the present. -Local historian Austin Hodgins has been compiling information on Biddulph's history . since after he retired from being township clerk in '84. Before holding the clerk's post for 23 years, Hodgins was on Biddulph council for 12 years, six as reeve . At first Hodgins was adding to Sure. An' This is Biddulph by Jennie Raycraft Lewis, a Centennial (1967) project documenting the township's history:.Hodgins was interested in including all of the township's 30 Centennial farms at the time in an updated book after the township ran out of copies of Sure. Then he decided, why stop at just the Centennial farms? That's when the Biddulph Sesquicentennial Committee was established and - Pioneers to the Present was born.. Austin and deputy clerk/treasurer Joan Goddard are looking for people_to submit stories and photos on Biddulph' s. families; • .businesses, horse breeding/racing, sports, community organizations and events to give a snapshot description of Bi 'dulph throughout the years including up to the present. - "You could live here for -only a year and submit a family history;" Goddard said. "Someday that will turn into a 25 year _ ,, history.: . The deadline for item submission is Nov. 30 and all items will be returned. -- --___._- -- • Some things the book is sure to feature are the 1982 International.Plowing Match,at Alan Scott's farm that's now an ostrich farm, the fact seven of Biddulph's reeves went on to become Middlesex County wardens and; of course, the - notorious Donnellys. The book, which will feature Biddulph's logo (a green shamrock and a beaver chewing a branch) on its cover,. will also include a circa 1850 map with a present one. The township is picking up_fhw.tah.for publishing the book and the Sesquicentennial Committee is hoping to fecoup all costs through book sales. Here's a Biddulph fact };ou may not have known: while the first white settlers came to what was to become Biddulph --Township in -1832, a black settlement pre -dates that dateby a few years, Hodgins said. The settlement went from the Ausable River to St Patrick's Catholic Church. Hodgins said the settlers were comprised of former slaves that didn't want or couldn't afford to pay Ohio's $500 bond for slaves to remain there and slaves who escaped here. The last remnants of that settlement is the Butler family with descendents now living in Lucan. ' The book's 2,000 copies will be published by Christmas '98. Each book -will cost $50 but early birds can save$5 by reserving a book for $20 from now till May 1, 1998. For more information, nail the township office at 227-4491.
