Jodie Baker & Elizabeth Kerslake
With a new school year underway, we would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to Mr.
Beckett and the staff at the Times Advocate for their continued support of the monthly Panther Page. We
have received much positive feedback from parents and students who appreciate being informed of the
events taking place at South Huron, and we 1, 1 ward to another year of publication.

South Huron is open

fitness throughout the winter months.
The school is open at 7:00 a.m. so if
you walk in the morning before 8:30
a.m., but would prefer not (o walk
outdoors once the cooler weather

School Advisory Council
Kathy Hayter, Chairperson
The School Advisory Council (S.A.C.) is a government mandated
council whose purpose is to increase communication between schools
and their communities, thus enabling students and parents to take a
more responsible and active role in the education programs and services
within their own community.
Parents are to be the majority of the council. The students at SHDHS
are your children and their education is the future for all of us. We as
parents must get involved. Last year. we played an active role in
Pantherfcst and with the money we raised we helped purchase the
illuminated sign in front of the school. We were also involved with
establishing the new rules for the smoking policy. and the student
handbook. We sponsor the "Student of the Month" award and give our
advice to the administration concerning other issues within the school.
This year. in addition to the tasks listed above, we arc involved with
local business people in an effort to purchase computers for the Library.
We recently sponsored a booth at the Exeter Fall Fair to generate
awareness of our Council, and to inform parents of the upcoming
Parent-Teacher interview Night.
Our next meeting will beheld October 7 at 7:00 p.m. in the SHDHS.
We encourage parents to attend.
Spotlight on Phys. Ed
Each month we are planning to focus on a different subject discipline.
This month, the focus is on the Physical Education Department.
Brad Tieman
Many kids in the school want to he involved in sports but can't afford
to pay the prices for out of school team sports. The Phys. Ed department
allows student not only to he active in sports, but to learn basic concepts
and rules for many diffcrcnt sports.
A lot has changed in the.Phys. Ed department in the past several
years. With larger class sizes, there has been Tess focus on individual
sports such as tennis and golf. With severe budget cuts being made, the
school team focus has turned from football and hockey, to sports that
use less equipment like rugby. Players are now asked to pay $25 for
school teams. Although there is less a cost, it is much Tess than out of
school sports and the fees set by many other schools. Some s..iools in
Huron County ask up to or even over $20(1 for participation on school
teams. When asked how South Huron is able to keep team cost so low,
Phys. Ed. teacher Tcrry O'Rourke said that we are lucky here, because
even with all the budget cuts being made. team travel is still accounted
of in the budget. Along with this funding. South Huron has many
fundraisers, including selling popcorn during lunch hours and the
upcoming Panther Power Walk in October.
Our Phys. Ed department also runs Badminton club for students and
publit.. it started Thursday. September 25 and runs most Thursdays from
7:30 to 10:001 m.
in the past, the government has talked about eliminating Phys. Ed.
from the curriculum in order to decrease costs, and promote a return to
the basics in curriculum. At this school, and 1 suspect at most schools in
this country, Phys. Ed. is one of the most valuable subjects - it may not
promote reading and writing, but it does promote physical fitness, and
for many, a relief from the academics. For some kids, school sports and

Grade 9s:
WELCOME TO THE CIRCUS!
Lisa Clarke & Kathy Rohde
The annual Initiation Assembly was held on September 8th. The
theme for this year was "The Circus". The Grade 9's were herded __
into the gym while circus music played. Instead of calling them up
by homerooms. Student Council members and Prefects just chose a
few students at a time. Because of this: some Grade 9's didn't even
get initiated.
Some of the activities included taping Grade 9's to the wall and
makeovers. Other Grade 9's had to push timbits off the stage with
their noses. When they got to the edge of the stage they all got a
surprise whip -cream pie in the face. A few also had a creamed corn
mixture poured on their heads. Other events included being fed
pudding blind -folded, shaving the whip cream off of a balloon until
it exploded, and then the Grade 12's used the Grade 9's as target
practice with whip -cream pies.
The Welcome Dance was held on September I I th. It was a
large screen video dance and there was a pretty goixl turn out.
Prizes were thrown out into the crowd for people to catch.
Everyone received a package of gum and a chocolate bar from the
sponsors as they left.
The annual Slave Auction was held on September 9th.
Altogether the a auction raised $110.00. Many Grade 9's were
dressed up in costumes and had signs on them as they sang for their
owners in the halls.
Most Grade 9's didn't think initiation was as had as they thought
it would be. Here are some of their comments: Adam Higgs said,
"I liked having pies thrown in my face." Ryan Parsons said, "It was
cool and funs and Henny Pfaff summed up the week by saying, "It
was awesome!"
Having survived Welcome Week, Grade 9's can now settle in and
hopefully, feel as though they belong at South Huron! -

Cross country team is
definitely representing SHDHS
Letisha Fairbairn
Although the cross country team is lacking in numbers, they are
representing our school in an excellent manner.
On Thursday. September 25, the team travelled to a meet in London at
Clarke Road. Christian Stuckless finished 10th and Dave Robilliard
placed in the top quarter. Dan Snell placed 17th in his race and Henny
Pfaff placed in the middle of the pack.
Erin R9billiard finished in the top quarter. She stated that she "didn't
have a goal race" and Coach Mr. Fulop said, "she usually runs very well".
Kristen Brooks placed 37th out of 137 runners and Fallun Giles placed
21st.
Mr. Fulop said. "Brian Herrigan was the most improved runner of the
day." •
Unfortunately. Melanie Culhurt didn't get to complete her race due'to a
knee injury that occurred.
It looks like our cross country team is off to a good start. Good luck
this season to everyone.
