Death Notice;
GRAVETF - Donald Jaynes "Boom" Gra-
ven. of Hanover, passed away at Hanover
and Distract Hospital, Hanover on Saturday.
September 6, 1997. He was 63. Donald was
born in Sudbury. son of the late Earl and
Eva (Faulkner) Graven. At an early age. his
family moved to Kitchener and this is where
he completed his elementary and secondary
schooling. Don attended Kitchener Colle-
giate Institute. While in Kitchener. his first
job was at the offices of Bennett and Wright.
but his love was for hockey. Graven. who
said he could skate before he !carred to
walk, has played. coached and officiated at
almost every level of hockey over the past
fifty odd years. in the early 1950s he played
for the Waterloo Siskins. and was part of
their winning all -Ontario Championship in
the 1953-54 season. For over a ten year pen-
od, his "booming" slap shots earned him his
nickname. When Don moved to Exeter dur-
ing his hockey heydays. he became a mem-
ber of the Exeter Mohawks of the Intermedi-
ate A league which included teats such as .
the Goderich Sailors, the Mitchell Ked Dev-
ils. the Clinton Colts •and the Staihroy
Rockets. He started working for Canadian
Canners in Exeter and joined the Exeter
Times -Advocate as a sports columnist and
advertising sales person. His conutusaton
based salesmanship made him very success-
ful. "Doh would say that it was this inteost-
ty, this entrepreneurial spirit which led him
into many successful years of coaching."
Don soon accepted the position of recreation
director for the town of Exeter, met Mary
McKnight of Exeter and they were married
in 1956. Mary was an avid hockey fan and
supporter and it was at the focal arena.
where they had first met! The Gravetts have
three sons - Mark and his wife Cathenne
with two children. Celtic and Luke of Toron-
to: Gary and his.wife Lynne with two chit
dren. Ashley and Kaitlyn of Port Elgin: and
John and his wife Michelle of Guelph. Don
came to Hanover as. the recreation director
and managed the Coliseum -and other cultu-
ral and recreational activities between 1964
and 1977. As recreational director in Hano-
ver and during his time in Exeter..Don ran a
summer camp on the shores of Lake Huron,
just' nosh of Goderich-for 32 years. Over
this rime more than 4000 campers and play-
ground leaders came from across ,Cenada to-
expenence this wonderful fellowship and
competitive spirit - Boom's Kin Camp.
Boohro and Boom's Rec-camp! Whatever
the name. soon former campers were send-
- ing their children to the weekly camp. Al-
ways one to be fluty and involved in com-
munity activities.. Don also coached the
Hanover Barons-lthen known as the Hum-.
canes) for three seasons in the late 1960's:
With the encouragement of friends in both
Exeter and Hanover. Don conducted hbckey
schools- from "Ridgetown to Renfrew". "I.
enjoy the kids".he said most often and "Cm
proud of trying to help kids along the way."
It was common to bear Don say that he is
upset by coaches who are more -interested in -
winning than they are in encouraging kids to
do better. Don said children learn from the
examples set by -coaches, and thus. to restore •
the respect and discipline -which he sees as a
lost pan of today's game. Gravett commonly
noted that* minor •hockey is the' stepping
stone for kids in• life! New opportunitie.s-
kept coming, and in 1976 he joined a small
team of hockey buffs and they gave birth to
the Canadian Qldtiiners Hockey Associa-
tion. Don was the •Director of Development
an spent time travelling across Canada plant-
ing -the seeds and organizing local teams and
tournaments for oldtimer hockey. Graven
played with the Montreal Westmount Old -
turners and was very instrumental in the first
two international tournaments -held in Hol-
land in 1976 and Switzerland in 1977. To-
day oldtimer hockey is played in almost eve=;
ry Canadian community and has grown into
a global organization. Don returned to
Southwestern Ontano and bnefly acted as
the recreational director in Wianorebefore
starting up the Lakeside Shopper in Hanover
which was a trernendous success for over l-4
years. Eventually this "little - shopper that
grew'' became the SaugeenCity News. Gra-
.
ra-
-vett-thensoCd i ere pager to TW. Eedy Pub-
lishing hut remained as publisher until his
health problems persisted. Don's family un-
derstood the pressures -of growing up in the
public light,- and became more and more
supportive of his special projects and ambi-.
nous ideas for enhancing the•community life
in Hanover over the_years. "Don would kid
that the only place whereby he gets respect
is on/the ice!" After 151 years as an OMHA
official supervisor and who. up to just two
years ago referred 66 games. the old ttttaajim
was too crusty tole intimidated! Don didn't
stop at hockey. Ne was an avid 'golfer, • '
his most recent accomplishment was wt-
ning'the gold medal in golf at the Ont
Senior Games. Hanover and area residents
will remember him for his outstanding lead-
ership and -contributions during Canada's
centennial year. The year long centennial
projects in 1967 resulted with Don being
awarded a Canadian tribute for his dedicated
efforts! Many Hanovenans still treasure his
. "Pfcto-Peek" centennial edition of which he
both edited and published:. Don never turned
down a request or a challenge. He tirelessly
promoted the Hanover region and it's re-
sources. He was a very proud man. a dedi-
-eated fan of the Montreal Canadiens hockey
dub and a champion of values of Canadian
citizenship. Gravett. along with Duncan
McCallum and Scony Duncan of Hanover.
were . the co-chairs for Hanover's 1994
Homecoming celebrations. Whenever this
trio of enthusiasts were told that celebration
plans were either too lavish or perhaps Han-
over wasn't able to play in the big leagues.
Scotty. Duncan and Boom proved them
wrong! Even in his • forced retirement for
-health reasons. Don .almost single-handedly
organize last. years Food Bank Bonnie!.
'Don was already making- preparations for
this years Bonspiel in November, from hit
hospital room; And finally, Don's sheer gnt
and determination pot him right in the mid-
dle arid he -look responsibility of promoting
and organizing the- "Snowbirds" extremely
successful event in May at the•Saugeen Mu=
mcipal.Airport. Some .of Don's final words
to many people was that he would keep lay-
ing and refemng hockey as long as his legs.'
held out: Don stated. 1'11 be done when my
. skates are done." Well, his skates outlived
him so Don will take them with him on -
life's next journey. Visitation was at High-
