Team develops History CD ROM
By Heather Mir
T -A Reporter
CLINTON - A team of students
and teachers worked togetherthis
summer at Seaforth District High
School to develop an OAC His-
tory Course in CD ROM format
thanks to a Tipp 1 grant.
"It is a teaching toot, it's not a
replacement for a teacher," ex-
plained Jim Moore, adding the
project is similar to The Joke's
Over CD on sexual harassment.
Because of copyright laws,
Laurie Hazzard, the teacher who
wrote the curriculum found she
had to develop her own primary
sources. She approached the pro-
ject as a study of history and was
able to include Huron County
community history in the CD
ROM through the use of film tak-
en at a Quaker meeting house as
well as footage of a re-enactment
of the Battle of 1812.
The students participated in the
design of this teaching tool by
creating the graphics, a glossary,
a timeline and several interactive
learning approaches.
The -content of the course in-
eludes a unit on North America
which traces the first European
contact with aboriginals. It also
provides an interactive activity
that demonstrates what is in-
volved in an archeologist's job.
Students and teachers found
they gained valuable experience
from the project and acted as
mentors for one another. " The
board hopes to be able to even-
tually market this CD ROM to
other school boards across Can-
ada.
Summer school report
Summer school principal Rob
Parr reported to the board at its
first fall meeting about thesum-
mer school program that he de-
scribed as a "second chance for
students."
The summer school program
ran from July 8 to July 30 and of-
fered remedial English and Math
classes. An adult continuing ed-
ucation program that ran through
to Aug. 15 at Vanastra, Wing-
, ham, Goderich and Exeter was
also a success. A total of 164
students participated in English,
Math and Tutorials held at Cen-
tral Huron Secondary School.
Stine series raises concern
The series of books including
Beasts, Goosebumps and Fear
Street have raised concern
among some parents and trustees.
The Fear Street series, is de-
scribed as"graphic and severe."
The education committee sug-
gested the titles of concern be for-
warded to the Librarians' As-
sociation for its opinion.
Trustee elections
The trustee nominations close
on Oct. 10 and there are four va-
cancies in Huron County for the
new Huron -Perth Board -to be
formed Jan. 1.
Tutors in the classroom
• The Huron Board has received
funding on a 50/50 basis from the
Ministry of Education for the Tu-
tors in the Classroom program.
The provincial funding of
$1,000 per.. placement provides
for 18 placements with the board
also picking up $1,000 per place-
ment. The post -secondary stu-
dents hired under this program
will assist teachers in the class-
room.
