Zurich Bean
Festival set to
please
ZURICH - Beans, beans, beans, can't get enough of those beans.
That's the general theme to the Zurich Bean Festival that kicks off
on Friday at 7 p.m. with the custom hot rod and antique car Cruise
Night (watch for the 'flame -throwing' vehicles) and opens officially
at noon on Saturday.
Other featured events during the two-day 32nd annual festival in-
clude (all events at the community centre unless noted otherwise):
both days — downtown midway; Friday — fireworks at dusk; Ca-
sino Night from 9 p.m. -1 a.m.: Saturday — pancake breakfast• be-
side Bean Kitchen from 7 a.m.-l0 a.m.; Custom Rod and Antique
Car Show, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.; home -cooked beans and pork chop din-
ners at the Bean Kitchen, 11 a.m.-7 p.m.; 'Has Beans' pingo, 11
a.m.; Player's Bench (licenced by LCBO), noon -6 p.m.; Klash the
Clown on the main stage, 12:15 p.m. and 4 p.m.; face painting near
the main stage, 1 p.m. -5 p.m.: Dr. Wallace's Frog Jumping Contest
(kids, bring your own frog!), 3 . p.m. in the Erb's Country Kitchen
lot: dance in the arena to Redhouse and Firefly, 9 p.m. -1 a.m. There
are also performances from Unknown Legends, Mozart's Melody
Makers, Craig Douglas, Dave Hoy and Nightwind spaced through-
out the day.
Festival chairperson Jody Durand said 2,500 lbs of white beans are
prepared over four days with Zurich's special recipe of ketchup, to-
mato sauce, bacon and a secret blend of spices to make about 7,500.
lbs of finished Naked beans. More than 20,000 people are expected
to visit Zurich during the festival and consume all those beans.
One notable change to the festival this year is the addition of a
kids meal of a hot dog and beans for •$3. Older folk can enjoy the
traditional beans and pork chop meal for $7.50.
