A .warm and friendly stan-
ding ovation encouraged
singer Sylvia Tyson tove
the audience two encore
numbers at Huron Country
Playhouse Sunday evening.
The Chatham native and
her back-up band, The Great
Speckled Bird, appealed to a
crowd spanning all ages, and
both entertainers and
audience appeared to be en-
joying themselves in the
cosy playhouse atmosphere.
Most impressive was Ms.
Tyson's versatility — she's
come a long way from the
folk songs of her Ian and
Sylvia days in the sixties.
There was certainly
something for everyone in
her concert, which included
some folk numbers, rock and
roll, country and western,
blues, gospel and even rhum-
ba.
Ms. Tyson concluded her
act with her famous
favourite, "And you were on
my mind"; which brought
spontaneous applause from
the audience. Her encore
numbers were two old time
gospel songs, including the
Carter family 'favourite,
"The circle won't be
broken".
She switched easily from

mellow folk songs, to the
twang of country with the
wail of the steel guitar and
even had a couple of truck
driving songs in her reper-
toire.
Included among her
numbers was a song written
by an inmate at a maximum
security prison near Edmon-
ton. Ms. Tyson and her band
recently finished teaching a
singing and songwriting
program to the inmates of
the prison. She talked about
the experience.
Ms. Tyson came on stage
wearing silver jeans, pink
blouse and pink cowboy
boots. She played guitar for
most of the songs.
Her band, The Great
Speckled Bird accompanied
her for all her numbers, and
joined in the singing several
times. The band features
Danny -Greenspoon on lead
guitar, Al Kates in the pedal
steel guitar, Joan Bessen on
piano, Rockin' Randy on
bass guitar, and Andy Ber-
man on drums. For the most _
part the band complemented
Ms. Tyson, but from time to
time they drowned out her
voice, making it difficult to
hear the words to her
ballads.
Mr. Tyson, and the Great
Speckled Bird will be at the
Canadian National Exhibi-
tion this week„ and following
that they will appear at the
Forum at Ontario Place.
Among the members of
audience Sunday night was
Ms. Tyson's mother from
Chatham.
Prior to the concert a
buffet dinner was served in
the playhouse courtyard,
and following the show,
birthday cake was cut to
honour the tenth year of the
playhouse. To the delight of
the crowd, Ms. Tyson mingl-
ed with them, eating cake
and signing autographs.
If she keeps on pleasing
audiences as much as she
,did there, she will soon find
herself on top again.
- Perhaps this year, we will
be seeing her at the Juno
awards. It's time Ann
Murray had some competi-
tion. Good luck, Sylvia.
