On Monday the Zurich
Women's Institute held their
regular meeting in the Hay
Township Hall. The mem-
bers of the committee in
charge were Mrs. L. Klopp,
Mrs, H. Neeb, Mrs. K.
Breakey, and Ethel Gabel.
Mrs. Klopp acting as
chairlady welcomed guests
and members.
With Idella Gabel at the
piano the program opened
with "0 Canada", followed
by repeating the Mary
Stewart Collect and singing
the "1nstR!"te Ode".
The gathering was for-
tunate to have Mrs. Beatrice
Rader, and Mrs. K..Breakey
sharing their talents by
singing two lovely duets.
They were accompanied at
the piano by Idella Gabel,
who also played several
delightful piano solos.
In keeping with the theme
for September namely
"Tweedsmuir History',
Mrs.- H. Neeb gave an ac-
count of a meeting held in
August at Lambton Museum
for curators of the London
Area. South Huron district
hosted the occasion.
Many points were
discussed such as types of
books to use, suggested
materials to usg for entries
such as, homes, farms,
towns and their businesses &
industries, and also different
. ways of presenting these
books. In case of a branch
institute disbanding, it was
suggested these books be
kept by the District'
Mrs. L. Klopp then
presented a brief, interesting
summary of the descendants
of Johannes Kalbfleisch;
which dated back to the
sixteenth century, in Ger-
many. Following their
migration to Canada -in the
early eighteen hundreds,
they pioneered as farmers.
They eventually founded
sawing, and planing mills in
Huron County, which
finally led to the present
"Zurich Wood Produets".
Mrs. H. Neeb discusses
several useful guide sheets
for those interested' in
keeping their family history
alive. She also commented
on a well prepared scrap-
book which she compiled for
the Tweedsmuir History of
Zurich and its many ac-
tivities. Several books and
articles arranged by the
committee were on display.
The president Mrs. H.
Hohner, chaired the business
meeting.
Mrs. L. Klopp represen-
tative of the Zurich W.I. for
the 125th Anniversary
Celebrations of Zurich to be
held next July, asked for
suggestions to aid in this
project. •
Five members' birthdays
were acknowledged by.
singing Happy Birthday.
Two oT the members being
over 90 years of age.
Delegates to the District
Rally to be held in Gorrie on
October 6, will be Mrs. W.
Neeb and Mrs. M. Doerr.

60 years ago
Miss Mina Doan, of
Winnipeg, was a visitor at
the home of the Williams'
family for the past few
weeks.
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Merner,
of Clinton, were visitors with
friends in Zurich one day last
week.
The moving pictures
shown in the town hall are
being well patronized. The
shows are above average
and many beautiful pictures
are being shown.
Mr. Nesbitt Woods has
taken charge as teacher of
the Parr Line School, in Hay
Township.
Mr. George Schroeder has
sold the farm recently
purchased ,by him on the
Bronson Line, to Mr. Arthur
Gabel, who owns the ad-
joining farm.
Mrs. Church and two
.children who have been
visiting with her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. William Klopp,
and other relatives, returned
to their home in Welland on
Wednesday.
Mr. Henry Bedour has
disposed of his farm on the
Zurich road to Mr. Joseph
Druar, of this village.
Possession will be given next
March.
Miss Elizabeth Rannie has
returned from Grand Bend
and will resume her teaching
of singing and piano playing.
50 years ago
Mr. Earl Youngblut had
the misfortune the other day,
while running to fall and
fracture his right arm, and it
will be some time before
Earl will have the full use of
-his arm.
Labor Day passed off very
quietly in the -village on
Monday, as there were no
special attractions in town,
most of our citizens tried to
find a cool spot at the
lakeside.
Zurich Public School re-
opened on Tuesday morning,
and the kiddieswere some
rejoicing and some
regretting of the thought of
goingback for another year
of hard plugging.
Mr. Harold Klopp is
visiting with his parents on
the 14th.
Miss Helen Thiel spent the
weekend at Detroit,
Misses I Lottie Turkheifn
and Martha Heidman;
Messrs. Len Prang, Bruce
Klopp, attended the third Bi -
Annual Convention of the
Luther League of Canada,
held at Stratford, on
August 31 and September 1.
Mr. Morris Noll, of
Detroit, is spending a few
weeks at the home of Mr. A.
Melick.

Mr. and Mrs. William
Shoemaker and Mrs. Leo
Luedeke, of Pigeon,
Michigan, were holiday
visitors at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. William Hugh,
on the 14th,
Among the students of
Exeter High School who
received passes in their
upper school exams were
Marion Cowan, Exeter;
Bruce Eickmeier, Arvis
Haberer, Jean Krueger, all
of Zurich.
The Zurich Lions Club
staged their first frolic last
Thursday night and the net
proceeds. of $2,000 will give
the newly organized club a
good start in their activity
work.
Mips Joan Paisley, of
Worcester, Mass., is at-
tending continuation school
in Zurich, and is in residence
with her aunt and uncle, Mr.
and Mrs. W.A. Siebert.
A large number of those
people connected with the
Sararas family attended
their reunion in New
Hamburg on Monday, when
200 were present.
Mr. and Mrs. Percy Rowe
and family, of Bolton, were
weekend visitors at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Newell
Geiger, on the Goshen Line
north.
Mr. Oliver Cantin is
spending, a few' days with
parents at.St. Joseph.

Mr. Kenneth Weido and
sister Miss Ruth and Miss
Marion Turkheim, the
outstanding members of the
Zurich Girls and Boys Band
left Zurich, on Tuesday
evening for London where
they will join the London
Band where they will play at
the Toronto Exhibition this
Thursday. -
Mr. and Mrs. Leroy
O'Brien and son Donald, and
Miss Olive O'Brien motored
to Niagara Falls on Sunday
where they visited with the
former's son William Jr. who
is on the Bank of Montreal
staff for that city.
Miss Cloria Deitz, of
London spent the weekend at
the home of her parents here
in Zurich.
Miss Norma Steinbach has
returned home after her
summer vacation with her
sister and family, Mr. and
Mrs. James Hackett and
baby at Belleville.
Miss Lyn Mooney, of St.
Thomas is enjoying her
holidays at the home of her
friends, Mr. and Mrs. Ernie
Laidlaw.
Twenty Kinsmen in
Hensall are busy scurrying
around gathering together
the ingredients for spicy
home cooked beans and cole
slaw, all to be prepared by
them for the second annual
Ontario Bean Festival,
which is sponsored by the
Hensall Kinsmen Club.

The first sod was turned on
Tuesday morning for the
construction of the new Ste.
Marie Separate School at St.
Joseph. Construction on the
four classroom school is to
begin within the next week.
The Zurich Ladies Bowling
League held their
organizational meeting last
Thursday night and made
arrangements for . the
coming season. Twelve
teams have been entered in
the league, from Zurich,
Dashwood and Hensall.
