Big not best
The fallacy of big is best is too often citedps the
best reason for doing things.
Actually, small is the best especiallywhen it com-
es to creating jobs.
While much has been heard and written about the
thousands of jobs large, mostly foreign-owned com-
panies provide in Canada, tlifusinesses that com-
pose the backbone of Canadian labour as well as
enterprise are the small to medium-sized firms.
Locally -owned and often with small to medium
payrolls, they are the generators of new jobs,
wealth and to increasing the Gross National
Product.
In the six years between 1970 and 1976 the fastest
growing sector of the national economy was the
Canadian -controlled firms in the 100 and 199
employee -size class.
In a study prepared by the Canadian Federation
of Independent Business 111,000 jobs were created
by small and medium-sized enterprises between
1970 and 1976.
An example of a local firm which applied in-
itiative and has prospered is Instalfab Ltd.
Operating out of an old building on Wellington St.,
the firm manufacture customs steel work.
Last year it employed five office and 29 shop'
employees. This year the firm's payroll has in-
creased to 10 office and 34 shop people.
Yet, nothing is said. No word -is mentioned. The
company just goes ahead and does what it knows
how. -
It is companies across Canada like Instalfab that
provide the real opportunity for employment and
wealth in the nation.
Their success has a much greater impact on the
local economy through the people and services they
pay to have.
The salvation of this country won't be through
firms of foreign -owners. They have no stake in the
country.
The people who do are the .leaders and en-
trepreneurs of small and medium-sized businesses.
They are the ones who are prepared to risk their
money to provide goods and services. They are the
ones this nation should look to for the country's
future prosperity.
