Say column on drinklng makes Junlr Farmers 'scapegoats'
Dear Sir:
Re: December 5 issue of
Times Advocate - the letter
written by Gwyn Whilsmith.
I thought it was unjustified,
giving the impression that the
Junior Farmers are a group
with a drinking problem.
This organization is fairly
well known and respected in
Ontario, including the South
Huron Junior Farmers in the

tificates of Achievement to Daryl Bycraft, Ilderton and Provincial Honours to Pam

Exeter area. It is noticeable
that Mrs. Whilsmith has put
this fact aside.
It was unfair for her to pick
on Junior Farmers; when she
was talking about the drink-
ing problem the population
has in general.
• I hope this type of article
that pinpoints Junior
Farmers in this way,' is not
printed again. It creates a bad
name for a great
organization.

Attention: Mr. Bill Batten,
Editor
Dear Sir;
.I am writing this letter in
regards to the article written
by Mrs. Gwyn Whilsmith en-
titled "Don't believe the false
claims that only drinkers en-
joy life" that was printed in
the December 5th issue of the
Times Advocate.
This is the second time in
two years that the Junior
Farmer Association has been
used for a "scapegoat" in an
article on youth alcoholism.
I think that Mrs. Whilsmith
should know that Junior
Farmers are much more than
the false mental picture she
projects of young people get-
ting together for the sole pur-
pose of getting plastered. She
seems all too eager to
chastise us rather than find
out what we stand for and do.
Has Mrs. Whilsmith not
seen the years Of pictures
and articles about.Junior
Farmers printed in this
paper? What about our dona-
tions to the Dashwood
Medical Centre, the Red
Cross and Exeter Fair
Association to name a few.
Do foul mouth youths go
out and canvass for the Heart
Fund every February?
I suppose the combination
Junior Farmer Choirs from
Bruce, Grey and Huron coun-
ties that sang at the Queen's
Park Bicentennial celebra-
tion and also for Queen
Elizabeth and Prince Philip
were a bunch of louts and
shrews?
While I respect Mrs.
Whilsmith's intent in the ar-
ticle, I feel it did nothing more
than slander and alienate our
service club and cause angry
and bitter feelings among our
club members.
Where was Mrs. Whilsmith
when we held our advertised
Public Awareness night last
March at the South Huron
Rec Centre when only one
person the mayor, Bruce
Shaw, attended?
I feel betrayed by this
paper and that all our hard
community work has gone for
naught by this paragraph of
irresponsible journalism.
Sincerely
Rob Essery

Mr. Editor:
Re: "Don't believe the false
claims -hat only drinkers en-
joy life" by GWyp Whilsmith,
Times Advocate, December
5, 1964.
Firstly, "it seems to me"
that I have never heard
anyone make such a claim
"that only drinkers enjoy
life".
Secondly, I'm rather cer-
tain from reading the entire
article several times that
Gwyn actually has her heart
in the right place, and was
trying to make a very wor-
thwhile contribution, with the
advice she was giving.
However, I do feel it was
quite an unnecessary low
blow to single out a specific
group of young people; loved
and respected in our com-
munities calling them "rude
foul mouthed louts and
shrews".
This is not to defend such
behaviour, if in fact it was as
gross as the article describ-
ed; but rather to insulate our
young people from being set
apart, maligned, openly
criticized and being called
names that suggest profane
adjectives.
I personally know many
"Junior Farmers". My
description would be quite the
contrary. They are not
perfect. The last person who
was, died on a cross.
I am confident their love,
kindness, generosity,
thoughtfulness, intelligence
outweighs anything for which
they could be criticized.
I say "up" with people,
"up" with Junior Farmers,
"up" with our kids. Let's read
more about our young people,
but let us stay away from the
negatives, and the "whipping
post:'
Our society already has far
too many lives "frustrated"
by being fed the wrong infor-
mation, or to say the least,
emphasis in the wrong place,
brainwashed into believing
they were failures and would
never amount to much.
Let us, as adults, see
beyond growing pains, and
emphasize to our young peo-
ple that we see and recognize

the "praiseworthy things they
do"! You know what Mr.
Editor, we all need that rein-
forcement to be happy,
healthy and successful.
One doesn't have to look
very hard or long to find an
extensive list of "praisewor-
thy" things our Junior
Farmers have done, for many
of us personally and especial-
ly our communities. The ma-
jority of them have personal
achievements that make us
proud. As an employer, I have
one of those "Junior
Farmers" on my staff. I say
that proudly.
Finally, our kids are not
perfect but they are not bad
and to use them as an open
example to illustrate the
wrong that is being done in
our society is in very, very
poor taste, unfair, unwise and
lacks Christian ethics. Kids
we're with you, we see you as
"praiseworthy".
