Hallowe'en coins save lives
If every Ontarion put just a
dime into a UNICEF collec-
tion box this Hallowe'en, the
lives of five million children
could be saved!
Each year in the developing
countries live million young
children die of dehydration
caused by diarrhoeal infec-
tions. UNICEF is implemen-
ting a treatment to combat
this, called Oral Rehydration
Therapy, which is part of a
four -point program recently
adopted by UNICEF. The
other three parts of this pro-
gram, which is called GOBI,
are Growth Monitoring,
Breastfeeding and
Immunization.
Oral Rehydration (ORT3
consists of a simple combina-
tion of sugar, salt, baking
soda and potassium costing
approximately 10e per
package and which may be
administered by a child's
parents in theirown home.
The results produced by the
administration of ORT have
already been dramatic. For
example, in Honduras deaths
among children under two
years of age have been halv-
ed in one year because of a
massive campaign to pro-
mote the use of ORT for
children suffering from diar-
rhoea. In India infant deaths
in 13 Punjabi villages have
been halved by the implemen-
tation of ORT in less than two
years.
These are only two ex -
New phone books out
Lighted candles, the univer-
sal symbol of a birthday,
dominate the front and back
cover of the new London -St.
Thomas and surrounding
area directory, in recognition
of Ontario's Bicentennial, be-
ing celebrated in 1984.
Some 245,000 copies will be
delivered, beginning
November 11 and ending
November 28.
Peter Croome, local Bell
Canada manager, said the in-
troductory pages of the phone
book have been redesigned
giving the public a fast and
easy reference for all kinds of
telephone information.
Drawings, bold -face
headings, white space and
symbols are used to make
each section of information
stand out.
"We expect people will find
it easier to locate and read in-
formation in the introductory
section because of the new
format," said Mr. Croome.
"One part deals with
customer service, another
with finding numbers, local
and long distance calling and
a final one with the federal
rules which govern Bell."
The introductory pages also
point out that there are no
longer three free calls a
month for residence
customers who call directory
assistance for telephone
numbers that are listed in the
directory. There is also a $9
charge for processing NSF
cheques.
Bell is continuing its policy
of delivering one directory
per household.
ampler of many - but Oral
Rehydration Therapy is still
not available to the majority
of children in need of the
treatment.
It can be... if every On-
tarion contributed just one
dime to UNICEF on
Hallowe'en. You can help
UNICEF in this special life-
saving effort by being ready
with your dime on October 31!
Physical education
skills are important
Basic skills in physical
education are as important
for children as are com-
munication and computation
skills says a University of
Western Ontario professor.
Professor Auke Van Hoist
of Althouse College, the
teachers' college at Western,
said to achieve these skills, he
has three goals. These goals
are part of the physical
education program he has
written for primary grades.
This program is used in whole
or in part by the Huron -Perth
Separate School Board and
the Perth and Huron County
Board of Education.
The three goals in Prof. Van
HoIst's physical education
program are reasonable
knowledge and proficiency in
motor skills. understanding
and applying the knowledge
of the affects of activity on the
body and the role of activity
in daily living-.
Ile says there has been a
definite improvement in the
physical activity of Cana-
dians over the past few years.
On top of this, Prof. Van Hoist
says research shows a decline
in the severity of heart
disease among Canadians.
However, not everyone
agrees that physical activity
is for them. This, said the pro-
fessor, is where lifestyle
changes have to be made.
Prof. Van Hoist was a
presentor at the Huron -Perth
Separate Schools systems PA
day. llis goal for that day was
to make the teachers feel
comfortable with his physical
education program.
Singer at Blyth
Singer -songwriter Shirley
Eikhard will perform in con-
cert at Blyth Memorial Hall
on November 9 at 8 p.m. The
concert is part of a three con-
cert series of popular music
hosted by the Blyth Festival
which began with a Sylvia
Tyson concert in September
and will conclude with the
traditional band Eritage on
March 29.
Shirley Eikhard started
performing nationally at the
tender age of 13. At that time,
Anne Murray said of her,
"Shirley already has more
talent in her little finger than
most artists will ever
develop". Since that time,
Shirley has made a name for
herself as a versatile and
growing songwriter, per-
former and recording artist.
She has garnered two Juno
awards, recorded three
albums and appeared on over
300 radio and television shows
in the last twelve years, in-
cluding two Anne Murray
specials, numerous Tommy
Huntershows and a Hagood
Hardy special in 1976.
In recent years, Shirley's
music has grown from her
country and folk music roots
to encompass the jazz and
blues tradition as well. For
the Nov. 9 concert she will
perform a mixture of her own
compositions, many of which
have hit the "top ten" in radio
play, along with some classic
country and fold tunes.
Shirley will be backed up by
a three piece band.
Tickets for the concert are
$10 each, and are available by
calling the Festival at
534-9300.
Old landmark topples,
last sign of salt works
One of Exeter's oldest land-
marks toppled to the ground
on Monday.
A tall chimney, marking
the location of the Exeter Salt
Works, was pulled to the
ground at the site of the
former industry just west of
the CNR tracks near the can-
ning factory.
The Salt Works commenc-
ed operation near the London,
Huron and Bruce Railway in
the 1880s. Among the chief
shareholders in the company
were W.G. Bissett, T.B. Carl-
ing and D. Mills.
Salt was produced from a
well about 1,500 feet deep on
the site.
Most of the salt produced
was sold in the immediate
area.
According to local historian
Joe Wooden, the well was pur-
chased by a Mr. Ransford
from Clinton in 1924 and he
operated it for a few years un-
til the frame building housing
the works burned down.
The chimney was the last
remaining evidence of the
factory and it begrudgingly
left the scene, Monday.
In his History of Exeter,
author Wooden reports that
the salt company sent an ex-
hibit of salt and brine to the
Paris Exhibition and receiv-
ed a diploma for the entry.
The exact nature of opera-
tion is not known, but it is
believed that water was forc-
ed into the salt vein and then
the resulting brine pumped to
the surface where it was us-
ed in that state or evaporated
to get pure salt.
