the game, while the hosts had
11.
Scott Heywood was in the
nets for both victories.

while Mitchell had none.
Pee Wees Roll
The Exeter pee wees bomb-

skated to a 3-3 tie with the
powerful Byron minor pee
wees in an exhibition tilt in
London, Sunday.
The locals scored four
times in the third period
against Lucan to win going
away.
Tim vanDam popped a pair
to lead the attack with single
markers coming off the sticks
of Jamie Bedard, Al Blom-
maert, Mark Burton and
Dave Dalrymple.
Rob McLelland and
Harlen Tinney assisted on two
goals each and helping out on
singles were Todd McCann,
Burton, vanDam and
Blommaert.
In London, Sunday, the
locals overcame a two -goal
lead and then had to score
mid -way through the second
to regain their tie with Byron.
Rob McLelland scored
twice and added an assist to
pace the attack. Jamie
Bedard added the single
marker in a game in which
Exeter displayed some of
their best hockey of the young
season.
Bedard also picked up one
assist as did David Schwindt
and Jim Ahrens.
Harlen Tinney worked bet-
ween the pipes in the Byron
contest and Steve Sillery was
in the nets against Lucan.

The Exeter atoms scored
one of their biggest wins of the
young Shamrock season as

Dave Shaw
is recalled
Exeter minor hockey
graduate Dave Shaw has been
called up to help the struggl-
ing Quebec Nordiques who
are in last spot in the NHL
Adams division.
Shaw played consistently in
pre -season games for the
Quebec team and had been
expected to stay with the club,
but was shipped out to the
farm team in Fredericton.
On Friday night, Shaw
scored one goal in that team's
5-4 win over Sherbrooke. Op-
posing him was another Ex-
eter minor hockey graduate,
Perry Pooley. The two ex-
changed some pleasantries
following the contest.
Late Sunday, after the Nor-
diques had lost their fifth
game of the season against
three wins, Shaw was told to
report for their game in Mon-
treal on Monday night.
It is expected he'll be in the
lineup when the Nordiques
continue the road trip into
Boston, New York and
Buffalo.

period to seal the win.
Waxers Lose
The Exeter Waxers gave up
two breakaway goals in the
final three and a half minutes
of tbeir game against Parkhill
at the rec centre, Sunday, to
end up losing 6-4.
It was the first loss in
Shamrock action for the
novice crew as they had two
wins and two ties.
Sunday's game was a see-
saw affair throughout as Ex-
eter's early 2-1 lead vanished
into a 4-2 deficit early in the
third. However, they came
back to knot the count at four
each before the visitors
scored the late game tallies.
Sean McCann recorded a
hat trick for the Waxers and
Trevor Taylor notched- the
fourth tally. Ian Jean and
Jaimie vanDam each record-
ed assists.
Jamie Martene scored
three for Parkhill with Josh
vermulen adding two and
Doug Waters one.

Football squcids fin
in semi-finals at honie Thurs&iy
Both South Huron football
teams completed the regular
season Thursday by defeating
Palmerston. The junior
griders shut -out the opponent
27-0 while the seniors defeated
the Red men 27-14 in what
could be termed unusual
fashion. Both teams see semi
final action at the local school
tomorrow (Thursday).
The senior Panthers arriv-
ed at the Palmerston field late
and had time for only a short
warm up. Taking the field
prematurely did not seem to
phase the Panthers, who
opened the scoring early in
the first quarter.
Bill Fisher rambled 80
yards on the Panthers first
possession for his first of
three majors. Steve Gould
converted the Fisher
touchdown.
Palmerston narrowed the
gap in the second quarter
with a nine yard run but fail-
ed on a two point conversion
attempt.
Sean Whiteford scored his
first touchdown of the season
before half time on a four
yard run. Gould successfully
converted the major to make
the score 14.6 at half-time.
Fisher's second touchdown
came on a perfectly executed
screen pass that went for 70
yards. Steve Gould increased
the South Huron lead with
another convert but Norwell
came back with eight points
of their own after a two yard
touchdown run and a two
point conversion.
Fisher completed the scor-
ing, taking the ball in from the
Palmerston 45 -yard line to
cap off the win and leave the
Redmen winless for the
season.
The senior Panthers were
forced to leave the field as
they had taken it, premature-
ly, after a fight broke out with
less than a minute remaining
in the game and the Norwell
season.
The fight started when a
Palmerston player savagely
tackled Alex Simpson by the
face mask. The incident
sparked fighting among
several players on the field
and players off both benches.
The incident was very cost-
ly for the senior Panthers.
Due to the fight, Simpson and
team mate Brett Batten will
be sidelined for the semi-
finals for their involvement in
the alternation.
Coach Ron Bogart blamed
the incident on the games' of-
ficials, who lost control of the
match in the first half. The
referees failed to call
numerous Norwell rough play
infractions causing tempers
to flare.
A special meeting of
coaches and league officials
was held in Seaforth last night
to discuss the incident, at
which time Bogart hoped to
have Simpson and Batten
reinstated for the semi final
match against Listowel.
The junior game in
Palmerston ended with the
locals shutting out Norwell
Mohawks edged
in league opener
The Wingham Royalsspoil-
. ed the home debut of the Ex-
eter entry into the WOAA in-
termediate hockey league as
they scored with just under
one minute left to post a 7-6
win at the Tec centre, Sunday.
The Mohawks jumped into
a quick 3-0 lead in the first
before the defending southern
division champion Royals got
untracked and the latter kept
pecking away at the lead un-
til they tied the count at 5-5 at
the end of the second.
Exeter scored,eariy in the
third to again lead, but
Wingham scored once on a
powerplay near the mid -way
mark to even the count again
and set the stage for their
game winner.
Ed Willis andDaveJackson
scored twice for the tribe with
singles coming off the sticks
of Brian Mercer and Randy
Kraut. Mercer added two
assists and helping out on one
goal each were Brian Baker,
ON ATTACK — Julie Russell and Pauline DeVries move to the attack against St.
Marys in field hockey action. The locals won this game in the Huron -Perth final and
on the weekend captured the WOSSA title.
Week goes from good to bad to worse
Irish win once in three times
The Lucan Irish managed
only one win in three outings
this week, but that was a big
one as they clipped the defen-
ding OHA champion Bulldogs
right in Mt. Brydges,
Tuesday.
Tonight (Wednesday
they'll set their sights on last
year's league champion Ex-
eter Hawks and hope to con-
tinue their roll against last
year's top squads. They have
one league win already
against the hawks.
In the Mt. Brydges game,
the Irish spotted their hosts
two goals in the middle frame
and then came back with
three of their own in the final
stanza to eke out a 3-2
triumph.
Wayne Urbshott and Bob
Thirwall scored on powerplay
attempts near the mid -way
portion of the final period and
then Urbshott stole a puck
while killing a penalty and
fired the winner with just over
five minutes left in the
contest.
Scott Balazs picked up
assists on the powerplay
tallies while Mike Arts and
Jesse Crawford helped out on
one each.
Returning home, Wednes-
day, the Irish couldn't handle
the strong Belmont Bombers
as they ended up on the losing
side of an 8-6 count.
The Bombers took a 3-0 lead
in the first and were never
headed although the Irish
were pecking away to keep
the score close.
Both teams scored three
times on the power play as the
Bombers took 12 of the 20
minors called.
Urbshott and Jeff Hodgins
had two each for the Lucan
crew, while singles came off
the sticks of Balazs and Rob
Stanfield.
Brent Martin and Arts had
two assists each to lead in that
department, while picking up
singles were Brad Hodgins,
Urbshott, Rob Hardy, Tim
Shipley, Al Craig, Balazs and
Mark Bannen.
Bart Powell was between
the pipes again and recorded
40 saves while Mike McLellan
stopped 33 for the Bombers.
The week kept getting
worse for the Irish as they
were drubbed 10-4 in
Tavistock, Friday.
The Braves took a 4-0 lead
and were never seriously
threatened.
Shipley, Jeff Hodgins, Stan-
field and Balazs scored for the
Irish. Brent Martin had two
assists and helping out on one
tally each were Craig, Arts,
Stanfield and Brad Hodgins.
Brent Fowles started in
goal for Lucan and was
relieved in the third by
Powell.
Tavistock coach Dave
Warden was ejected in the
third and his team took 14 of
the 26 minors called. Both
teams scored twice with a
man advantage while the
Braves added one while short-
handed.

After a scoreless first
quarter Scott Heywood
scored twice in the second.
Jon O'Connor converted both
touchdowns to put the Pan-
thers ahead 14-0 before half
time.
Larry McCarter scored his
first of two majors on the first
South Huron offensive play of
the third quarter when he
rambled in from 50 yards out.
With the score 20-0 coach
Dave Cox put in his second
string offense. McCarter
scored his second touchdown
of the day on the new of-
fences' debut play. The score
covered 75 yards and O'Con-
nor finished the scoring, con-
verting the touch -down.
The junior Panthers
defense managed to intercept
five Norwell passes during
the match. Trevor Cottrell in-
tercepted the first pass deep
in Norwell territory to set up
the first South Huron major.
Another important in-
terception came late in the
game when Dan Rooth pick-
ed off a pass in the end zone
to preserve the shut out.
Other interceptions were add-
ed by DarrylMcCann, Roger
Ward and Jeff Dalrymple.
The junior game was much
closer than the score in-
dicated and Cox expects to be
in for a tough game with the
two teams meet Thursday
again for the semi finals.
The Panthers will be
without the services of Trevor
Nichols and Gerhard Remple
for tomorrow's important
match. Nichols returned to
his winter home in Florida
this week and Hempel had his
appendics removed last
week.
The junior and senior foot-
ball teams ended the season
with records of five and one

ly, good enough for second
place in each case.
Both squads will enjoy field
advantage. Thursday for the
semi-finals. The juniors kick
off at 1:00 against Palmerston
and the seniors take the field
at 3:00 to face Listowel.
