Received a call this week from Tom Hardy in Lucan
telling all about their plans for the fifth edition of the
Lucan Cup hockey tournament.
Tom and his hard working executive including Mike
Anderson, Bill Darling, Pete Martens, John Hope and
Rick Gwalchmai are expanding the tourney which has
turned out quality hockey action for the past four years.
In addition to the 16 teams competing for the Lucan
Cup and individual diamond rings, a grouping is being
formed to accommodate local teams.
Recently the cyclone league trophy has shown up
after many years in someone's attic and it is being
restored and will go to the winner of the new cyclone
series. It was originally donated by W.H. Hoffman and
Son.
Hardy hopes to attract eight teams from the Huron -
Middlesex areas to compete for this refurbished trophy.
Possible teams are from Lucan, Ilderton, Exeter,
Seaforth, Strathroy, Goderich, Parkhill and possibly SL
Marys.
The Lucan Cup and cyclone tourneys will go Fri-
day, Saturday and Sunday, December 7, 8 and 9 - with
games in Lucan and the Stephen township arena at
Huron Park.
All Sunday semi-final andfinal games will be played
in Lucan.
Most of the 16 spots on the Lucan Cup roster have
been filled. Leading the way will be International Stick
of Toronto, winners in the last two years.
Five Michigan teams are entered. They are the
Plymouth O'Leary Hawks, Griffin Sports, Bench Pub,
Fraser Flags and Detroit Allied.
Diamond Lounge and Hoffey Construction from
Windsor will be joined by Hamilton, Ajax, Black Creek,
Oshawa and Mitchell.
A few added attractions will complement the actual
hockey playing. Friday night, the Lucan Minor Hockey
Association will sponsor a bingo and Saturday night,
the Lucan Irish juniors will be in charge of a dance.
Tom Hardy told us that the Isaac Robertson and
Company trophy has also recently surfaced. It was in
competition for four years, won by Lobo in 1936, Ilder-
ton in 1937 and 1938-39 it was won by Lucan.
Wire to wire tape
Detroit Tiger fans in this area may be interested
in learning that a cassette of the exploits of the Tigers
in 1984 is now available.
Radio Station WJR in Detroit is responsible for the
tape. It is called Wire to Wire Champions and will sell
for $5 including postage and handling. All proceeds will
go to Cystic Fibrosis and PAL.
It may be obtained by writing to WJR Detroit, Box
76, -Detroit, Michigan, 48211. Cheques are to be made
payable to WJR. •
Did you know?
In looking over some old scrapbooks, we found an
interesting item about switch hitters in baseball about
20 years ago.
Of the 500 players listed on the rosters of the 20 ma-
jor league teams in 1965, only 27 hit from either side of
the plate and of this number 11 were pitchers.
The best known pitchers hitting from both sides
were Mickey Lolich and Hank Aguire of the Tigers,
Robin Roberts, Jim Perry and Elroy Face.
It's interesting to note that one player on that list
is still active. He is Pete Rose. The other well knowns
at the time were Mickey Mantle, Tom Tresh, Junior
Gillian, Wes Parker and Maury Wills.
While talking about Pete Rose, he is only 94 hits
short of Ty Cobb's all-time record. With his position as
manager of the Cincinatti Reds, Rose should find
enough of the right spots to play and beat Cobb's record.
To be broken
Records are made to be broken.
That was the case with the Detroit Lions in a week
ago Sunday game with the Minnesota Vikings.
I3illy Sims needed Tess than 50 yards to break the
Detroit club's rushing record held by veteran Dexter
Bussy.
Late in the first half. Sims surpassed the old mark.
Minutes later he injured a knee and will be out for the
rest of the season.
Who was he replaced by? That'!; right, Dexter
Bussy and yes, he went on in the last half to gain enough
yards to go ahead of Sims again.

Capture fourth straight WOSSA title
For the fourth straight
year, the SHDHS field hockey
team are the.WOSSA cham-
pions and qualify to par-
ticipate at OFSSA in Burl-
ington this weekend.
The teams clinched the Huron
Perth title Tuesday, soundly
defeating St. Marys 5-1. The
locals simply over -powered
the Stone Town girls scoring
quickly and never looking
back.
Kendra Arthur led the
South Huron scoring attack
with a hat trick while singles
were added by Julie Russell
and Ronalyn Bell.
The Panthers faced Med-
way in their first match in
WOSSA competiion, Friday,
tying the game 1-1. Pauline
Brand scored the lone South
Huron goal.
atx
The locals started strong
against their first opponent,
controlling the first 15
minutes of the game. After
missing a penalty stroke, the
team fell apart and allowed
Medway to dominate.
South Huron's defence held
strong and the team pulled up
their stockings for the final 15
•minutes fo record the tie.
Saturday, the Panthers
shut out Ingersoll by a 2-0
score with Pauline Brand
making her return felt, scor-
ing both South Huron goals.
Brand suffered an injury to
her ankle and was sidelined
for a good portion of the
regular season.
South Huron's dominating
win over Ingersoll advanced
them to the final where they
met the host team, Strathroy.
After scouting the Strath-
roy team, coach Jim
Workman decided to have
Kendra Arthur and Pauline
DeVries shadow the op-
ponents top guns. The
strategy pald off as the Pan-
thers shut out Strathroy 2-0 to
claim the WOSSA title.
+'lt was a really agressive
match. End to end action the
whole game," Workman said.
Julie Russell and Pauline
Brand were the South Huron
scorers and Kim Crawford
recorded her second shut out
of the competition with help
from a strong defence and
cheers from an excited coach.
The field hockey team
leaves early Thursday morn -
ing for the OFSSA competi-
tion in Burlington which lasts
until Saturday. Sixteen teams
will be in attendance and
Workman expects the calibre
of hockey to be excellent.
"When you're down to the
last 16 teams in the province
you can expect tough com-
petition," Workman stated.
The OFSSA competition is
usually controlled by the big
Toronto schools, but the coach
believes that this year's
SHDHS squad has the best
chance in five years for a
medat
The local girls will have the
opportunity to meet and ex-
change pins or pennants with
teams from all over the pro-
vince while in Burlington.
The Panthers are ready for
the competition. The girls are
keen after experiencing vic-
tory at the WOSSA level, and
hope to bring home a medal
from OFSSA.

In
cross country test
South Huron runners put in
an excellent showing at the
WOSSA cross country meet
last week. The best finish was
turned in by the senior girls
who finished second to qualify
for OFSSA.
Rosemary Regier was the
first local runner across the
finish line in the senior girls
event. Regier finished 5th
with a time of 21:50.
Rosemary Regier is a
grade nine student and was
placed on the senior team to
help the team's chances at the
important meets. "She's an
unbelievable runner" coach
Joe Fulop said, "By far the
best runner to ever come to
the school."
Jeanette Van Esbroeck was
the next South Huron runner
to finish. She finished in ninth
spot with a time of 22:53 and
was followed by Sheila Regier
in 18th position.
Lindy Dillon crossed the
line in 25th and was followed
by Sandra Hullebusch, Susan
Birmingham and Irene
Dietrich in 35, 36 and 37th
spots respectively.
Fulop hopes to see the
senior girls place in the top
ten teams when they travel to
Georgetown to compete at
OFSSA, Saturday.
The junior girls' chances of
qualifying for OFSSA were
hurt with the absence of
Kathleen Little at WOSSA due
to illness. The junior girls
finished sixth at the meet.
Sandra Rooseboom was the
first junior from the local
school to cross the line.
Rooseboom finished in 22nd
position with a time of 19:49.
Sandra Relouw crossed the
finish line two seconds behind
Rooseboom in 24th spot while
Cassie Van Dongeri finished
25th.
Mike Clark was the first
South Huron runner to finish
the senior boys' race with a
time of 32:14 which was good
enough for 33rd position. Tim
Teeter and Jeff Wareham
finished in 52nd and 53rd spots
respectively.
Like the junior girls, the
junior boys chances were
hindered by the absence of a
runner. Mark Johnson was
unable to compete at WOSSA
due to an injured foot. The
juniors finished a disappoin-
ting 10th.
Donald Wareing was the
fastest local junior with a
time of 25:34, placing him in
28th. Glenn Durie finished in
35th position and was follow-
ed by Ray Lewis and Murray
Rundle in 48th and 75th
respectively.
Some 128 runners competed
in the midget boys race. Les
Bott was the best South Huron
finisher in 61st position
overall, and was followed by
Scott Hern in 67th spot.
All considered, the South
Huron runners enjoyed a very
successful season with three
Huron Perth titles and one
team, the senior girls, quali-
fying for OFSSA this weekend
in Georgetown.
