in Toronto
South Huron's junior foot-
ball team travelled to Toron-
to this week for an exhibition
match against a second
senior squad from Upper
Canada College. The local
griders defeated the city team
13-7 in a very close, exciting
match.
Darryl McCann intercepted
an Upper Canada College
pass early in the first quarter
which set up a 40 yard scoring
drive. Scott Heywood ran the
ball across the goal -line for
the game's first major, but
the locals were unsuccessful
on the convert attempt.
The city boys went ahead
after a long drive in the se-
cond. South Huron's missed
convert attempt was the dif-
ference in the game at half
time.
Defence was the Panther's
strong hand in the second
quarter. After several long
Toronto runs, the locals found
themselves defending their
goal line. The Panthers stop-
ped a Toronto run from the
five yard line and shut their
opponents down twice again
from the three to get the ball
back on downs.
After a scoreless third
quarter, Trevor Cottrell in-
tercepted a Toronto pass at
the 35 yard line and returned
the ball 24 yards to the Toron-
to 11.
South Huron picked up a
first down inside the one then
Heywood scored his second
touchdown of the game. Jon
O'Connor converted the ma-
jor to complete the scoring.
The junior griders' defence
played strongly for three
quarters. The defensive
strength came from the line
consisting of Steve Wilkinson,
Gerhard Rempel, Joe Gower,
Roger Ward, and Maarten
Reymer.
Junior coach Dave Cox
thought that the team played
really well. "It was a tough,
clean ball game", Cox said.
"The trip was a good ex-
perience for the team, both
culturally as well as
athletically."
Cox also had praise for the
kicking game of Tim Moore.
"Moore's foot got us out of
several tough spots". Moore
punted the ball nine times
during the match with his
longest covering 45 yards.
Both of South Huron's foot-
ball teams are back in action
this week. The seniors travel
to Clinton Thursday and the
junior team makes the trip to
Wingham. Both games kick
off at 2:00.

lost.
The Central press hurt the
South Huron seniors causing
them to turn the ball over
repeatedly. The seniors lost
the match by a :15-26 score
with Jackie Cottrell leading
the scoring for the locals.
The junior team was much
more successful, taking ad-
vantage of home court to
defeat Central 39-37. The
juniors kept the fans on the
edge of their seats throughout
the fourth quarter.
The junior match went
back and forth with momen-
tum swinging in and out of the
South Huron girls' hands. It
took a basket in the last min-
tue of play to put the locals up
two points. Stratford had
several chances to tic the
game hack up but the junior
girls held their visitors off to
record the win.
The midget girls' team was
defeated by Central by ten
points. The match was 10-9 at

Glenn was giving nothing for
Poplar Hill to hit and had a no
hitter until Gerald Lenders
got a two -out single in the
sixth inning which became
the only hit Poplar Hill would
get as Ron struck out eight
batters to post the victory.
Ted Ouimet was the losing
pitcher.
Game three again saw
Lucan score in the opening in-
ning but Poplar Hill manag-
ed to also scored in their half
and the game was tied 1-1
after one complete. It was to
be the only time Poplar Hill
would be close because Lucan
scored four runs in the second
inning and went on to win 7-2.
For Lucan Vic Capitano,
Paul Wraith, Brad Taylor,
Brian Noyes and Kevin Wind-
sor each had two hits in the
club's 14 hit attack and like
games one and two Lucan pit-
ching held Poplar Hill bats at
bay as Jamie Eveleigh gave
up only three hits while strik-
ing out six to gain his second
victory of the series. Don
Reed was the losing pitcher
for Poplar Hill.
Down, but not out, in game
four Poplar Hill decided it
was their turn to score fast as
they got two runs in the se-
cond. Lucan scored one in
their half and tied the game
2-2.
In the fourth, Poplar Hill,
facing elimination put
together three runs on three
hits, two walks and an Irish
error in the sixth and hung on
to win 5-2 and forced game
five. Leading the way for
Poplar Hill was Jack Higgs
with two of the team's five
hits. Jim Daniels was the win-
ning pitcher holding Lucan to
just three hits, Ron Glenn was
handed the loss for the Irish.
Poplar Hill was the scene
for game five with the Irish
ready to taste the champagne
and Poplar Hill trying to ex-
tend the series. In the top of
the second, Vic Capitano led
off with a triple and scored on
Kevin Windsor's single and
Lucan led 1-0 after two
innings.
In the third inning with one
out, Brian Noyes doubled
down the right field line,
batsmen for their club.
The Lucan Irish were pac-
ed by Kevin Windsor with 10
hits in 16 at bats for a .625
average. Paul Wraith follow-
ed with seven hits, Brian
Noyes six hits, Vic Capitano.
Brad Taylor and Gerry Fink-
beiner each had four hits in
the teams 44 hit attack during
the series.
The combined pitching of
Jamie Eveleigh and Ron
Glenn held Poplar Hill to just
16 hits walking 12 and striking
out 35. Lucan outscored
Poplar Hill 30-9 to win the
series 4-1.
The Lucan Irish would like
to thank all the fans for their
support during the 'past
season and also the Lucan
arena staff for the excellent
job with the diamond. We had
a very successful season and
hope to see everyone next
year.
