Times Advocate, 1984-10-17, Page 14Page 2A Times -Advocate, October 17, 1984 i Sports Spotlight By Ross Haugh Bless the boys A tremendous season. What else can be said about the 1984 season of the Detroit Tigers which was climaxed Sunday afternoon making Sparky Anderson, the only manager in baseball history to win world championships in both leagues. Sparky was at the helm of the Cincinatti Reds when they won the World Series in 1975 and 1976. In summing up the Detroit win, the key has to be Sparky Anderson's ability to juggle and switch his lineup almost everyday and keep every one of the 25 players in a happy mood. Everyone knew they would have a chance to play when the right time came. In an interview Sunday night he said his team was bound to improve next year which means we will hear a lot more from "The Bless You Boys". Despite their rather easy win in five games over the Padres, the Tigers seemed to lack the real killer in- stinct in the early stages of most of the games leaving alot of men on base and giving San Diego a chance to fight back. We did not see the Friday game in Detroit as ex- pected because the promised tickets did not become available. It seems some were willing to pay unbelievable prices for World Series tickets. On a Detroit news in- terview following Friday's game one fan said he travell- ed 1,500 miles and paid $150 for each of two tickets. Friday morning we heard a lady tell J.P. McCar- thy of WJR that she responded to an ad in the Detroit Free Press and was quoted $500 for one box seat next to the Tiger dugout for Sunday's game. Who isn't waving? Up until a year or so ago, the word wave was throught of on the beach, in the beauty shop, on the radio airwaves or to say goodbye. Fans at the home field of the football University of Michigan Wolverines decided to rise in following unison around the stands to spur the team on. In the just concluded major league baseball season, the wave switched a few miles to the corner of Michigan and Trumbull in Detroit to support the Tigers. Now hockey fans have joined the wavecraze. Dur- ing Saturday night's NHL game at Maple Leaf Gardens, announcers Bob Cole and Gary Dornhoeffer said a wave in the second period was the first in the National Hockey League. That is not correct. It missed by about one hour. We were listening briefly to the Detroit Red Wings broadcast on WJR and they reported the rotating stan- ding applause in the first period. A pair of revivals We may have to eat our early words about the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1984-85 season. Granted, three games does not a season make, but Dan Maloney's charges have shown they are serious about improving their defence. in Thursday's season opening win over Minnesota, the shutout recorded by rookie goaltender Allen Bester was the first for the Leafs in almost three years. The Leafs didn't show a great deal in pre -season play, but, that doesn't really count. Three wins and a tie were the best the Toronto club could do in eight ex- hibition games. Similarity, the Detroit Red Wings won only three times in eight starts, but, came out with strong efforts in opening regular games. Despite a Thursday loss to Chicago, the Red Wings played well and followed with a Saturday win over the New Jersey Devils. The Devils surprised the New York islanders Thursday by overcoming an early two goal deficit with seven unanswered goals. The Wings should also be considerably improved especially if Darryl Sittler decides to join the team. He could quite conceivably be reunited on the same line with Tiger Williams. We would hope Sittler changes his mind. His presence in the lineup would really enhance playoff chances for the Red Wings. Sounds cruel While professional hockey is really a business. some of the moves made by various teams could be con- sidered to be cruel. Sittler was named captain of the Philadelphia Flyers one day and the next day he was shipped off to Detroit The deal came as a complete shock to Sittler who is well settled in the city of brotherly love with his family. Exeter native Dave Shaw found himself in a similarity disappointing situation with the Quebec Nordiques Shaw who was the first draft choice of the Nordi- ques was told on Friday he had made the club and only four days later was sent to Fredericton, just hours before the Quebec team was leaving on a trip to Vancouver New category NHL president John Ziegler has announced the in- troduction of a new statistical category for the upcom- ing season. the power rating. H is determined by adding a team's power play and shorthanded goals scored and subtracting the power play and shorthanded goals allowed. The power rating will put emphasis on two key skill areas. Everyone will now pay even closer attention to scoring on and defending against power plays. if there is a tie between two teams in contention for the division titles the first tie-breaker will be power play goals scored followed by shorthanded goals scored. Using this formula last year. the Boston Bruins would have won with a plus of 29 while the New Jersey Devils with a minus of 40 would have had the poorest rating. 4 1 ¶ Hawks vs Hawks Friday Irish spoil home debut of Exeter Hawks The Lucan Irish spoiled the home debut for the Exeter Hawks, Friday, as they bombed the locals 10-5 before a sparse crowd at the rec centre. The game was closer than the final score may indicate as the Irish scored four goals in less than two minutes in the waning minutes of the third riod. Exeter netminder Kevin Oke was shaky throughout in his first league appearance and finally took himself out of the game after the late Lucan barrage. Top-rated netminder Peter Dearing was not dressed for the game due to school com- mitments in Waterloo. The Hawks battled the Irish on . ual terms throughout most of the game and led 4-3 after oned period and trailed by a 5-4 margin after two. Steve Batten and Steve Gould were the top snipers for the Hawks as each picked up a pair. Both of Batten's tallies came on first period powerplays, while one of Gould's was scored as the final buzzer sounded in the third. Bill Glover had the ON ATTACK — Jamie Caldwell of the Exeter Mohawks gets away a shot against Woodford at the rec centre, Sunday, while Ken Varley stands at the left awaiting a rebound. It was the firset test for the locals and while they appeared a little rough around the edges, gave indications that they'll have plenty of good hockey for area fans this winter in their intermediate debut. The team features junior graduates from Exeter, Hensall, Lucan, Zurich and Huron Park. Mohawks finish stron The Exeter Mohawks should provide a 1o1 of ex- citing hockey entertainment this winter in the Western On- tario Athletic Association in- termediate division if Sun- day's exhibition game is any indication of what is ahead. In an exhibition start at the South Huron Rec ('entre Sun- day night against the Wood- ford Royals, the Mohawks found themselves on the short end of a 4-1 score after one period of play. They rebounded with a big scoring surge in the third period and tied the score mid- way through the third period only to have the visitors -eke out a 7-6 victory. The only Exeter goal of the first period came from the stick of last year's Hawks captain fele 'iuckey on a three-way passing combina- tion with Brian 1lercer and Kris Bedard. The equalizer was realized at 12.19 as Kris Bedard finish- ed off a neat passing com- bination with Jamie Caldwell and Terry Caldwell. The first league home game for the Mohawks will be Sun- day night, October 28 at the South Huron Rec Centre with the Wingham Royals pro- viding the opposition. On home ice Wednesday night, the Irish played to a 4-4 tie with the Mitchell Hawks and Friday they doubled the score 10-5 on the Exeter Hawks. In action this week, the Irish are at the Lucan arena tonight, Wednesday at 8:15 p.m. to take on the Bothwell Barons and Friday they travel to Seaforth to meet the Centenaires. In the league opener Wednesday, the Irish blew a late two goal margin as the visiting Mitchell club came on strong with two goals in the last four minutes of play to square the score. After a socreless first period, Dean Westman put Mitchell on the scoreboard for the first time as he converted Field hockey shutout again South Huron's field hockey team recorded another win this week, shutting out Strat- ford Central 7-0. The team will be in action twice this week at the local school in- cluding a Huron Perth semi- final match Friday at 2:00. The Panthers dominated play the whole match Thurs- day against a weak Central squad. Kendra Arthur scored twice on penalty corners. Coach Jim Workman has had the girls prefecting penal- ty corners during practise sessions and the hard work paid off twice. Other South Huron scorers were Julie Russell and Lee O'Rourke with two each and Kelly Johns with one. Julie Wilkinson worked between the pipes to earn the shut out. The local girls have been playing without veteran leading scorer Pauline Brand in the lineup due to an ankle injury. Being unable to de- pend on Brand's stick forced the locals to look for the other forwards more than ever. Workman thought the girls played their best game of the season in the open type hockey game. "The girls back -checked well andhelped each other out the whole game," Workman stated. Today ( Wednesday) the field hockey team takes on the Listowel Lords on home terf and Friday the girls play a semi-final game for the op- portunity to play in the Huron Perth finals. Both games start at 2:00 at SHDHS. Saturday the field hockey team travels to Toronto to participate in the Ontario School Girls Conference tour- nament. The South Huron team is registered in the top division for the 200 -team tourament. The tournament declares no winner over the weekend, but will be an ex- cellent warm up for WOSSA and OF F SA competition. Your 19f34 Canada Savings Bonds.
