Present many awards
Future is theme of South Huron Commencement
The future was the theme of
most of the speakers at Fri-
day's annual commencement
exercises at South Huron
District High School.
In his valedictorian address
on behalf of grade 13 students
Tom Tomes said, "We are the
future. Education never ends.
We can help shape and mould
the world. Our days at South
Huron represent the, early
part of your life and certain
parts of the future".
He continued, "Mrs. Young
has shown that one person
can have a big effect on a big
world".
Tomes concluded, "Always
remember the friends you
made at South Huron. Stand
up and be counted and take
time to smell the roses".
Lisa Rundle representing
the grade 12 graduating
students said, "Our days at
South Huron will affect our
future. The school is the foun-
dation of the desires we hope
to achieve. Achievers are
dreamers. Believe in
yourselves and achieve your
goals in life".
Huron Board of Education
superintendent Robert
McCall spoke on the same
theme saying, "Canada is a
young country and you should
be ready to help in the master
plan of the future."
McCall added, "Graduating
students from South Huron
have brought distinction to
themselves and the school in
years gone by and I urge you

mencement exercises said
South Huron students have a
good start when they go to
university adding, "With the
same amount of effort they
find themselves ahead of
those from other schools."
Other members of the
Huron County Board of
Education attending the com-
mencement were board
chairman Eugene Frayne
and area trustees Harry
Hayter, Dr. John Goddard
and Dennis Rau.
Rev. Jim Sutton gave the
invocation. Huron -Middlesex
MPP Jack Riddell presented
Ontario Scholarships to the 11
grade 13 graduating students
who maintained averages of
over 80 percent. Huron -Bruce
MP Murray Cardiff also
brought greetings.
The Moncur scholarship
which principal Bruce Shaw
said carries almost enough
financial assistance for one
year in university was won by
Deb Josephson and James
McDonnell as the top female
and male students in grade
13. They also received a new
plaque donated by Phyllis and
Ken Lawton.
The other Ontario Scholars
in addition to Josephson and
McDonnell were Karen
Dauber, George Tomes,
Tracy Ducharme, Carla
Soloman, Erma Weernink,
Fred Miller, Catherine Pat-
terson, Susan McClure and
Dana Bozzato.
Susan McClure was not pre-
sent as she is spending a year
in England where her father
is on a teaching exchange, but
she did call a few hours before
the commencement exercises
to extend best wishes to all
graduating students.
The Marg Pym Memorial
trophy, a graduating student
citizenship award was
presented to Alice Dietrich by
Grace Pym and Stephen and
Josephine Dietrich presented
the Pauline Dietrich
Memorial award to Tracy
Ducharme for general
proficiency.
Bruce Hasselback
presented the Scott
Hasselback Memorial
Schola rship to George Tomes
Karen Dauber won the
Mary Farrow English award,
Kathy Topp received the
Sorority award from Sharon
Lynn, Phyllis Humphreys
presented the Exeter Kinette
award to Tracy Ducharme,
Mario Mol won the Kinsmen
club prize presented by Tom
Humphreys and Marsha
Clarke and Maria Mol receiv-
ed the Exeter Lioness award
from Joyce Eveland.
Colleen Glasgow, Fred
Miller and Erma Weernink
received the Town of Exeter
shield from reeve Bill Mickle.
Esther Hillman presented
the Exeter Legion Auxiliary
prize to Brenda MacDonald
and Ted Oke received the
South Huron Junior Farmers
award from Maurice Ryan.
Karen Dauber received the
student council scholarship
from Susan Birmingham and
the citizenship and student
council plaques went to Lisa
Three more
for Paton
Clare Paton of Lucan chalk-
ed up three more victories
this week in area county plow-
ing matches.
Saturday he won the open
class in Kent and Monday was
a winner in the open and an-
tique divisions in North Dum-
fries, near Cambridge.
Son Jim placed second in
the open category in Kent.
At Friday's Middlesex
Plowmen's Association ban-
quet, Antje Seegelken was
named Queen of the Furrow
for 198.5.

Commercial subject shields
went to Marsha Clarke,
Maria Mol, Dan Creces and
Laura Brennan and Karen
Dauber and Deb Wilson won
library service awards.
Secretarial certificates
went to Marsha Clarke,
Michelle Vandeworp,
Maureen Regier, Kim Con-
lan, Pauline DeVries, Deb
Ducharme, Shirley Gallant,
Denean Haist, Maria Mol,
Mary VandenBoomen. Elaine
Vincent, Joanne Watson and
Gail Willard.
Susan Birmingham and Joe
Martens represented the
school's student council in
presentation of pens to the
grade 12 and 13 graduating
students.
JUNIOR FARMERS AWARD — South Huron Farmers
president Maurice Ryan presented his group's award
to Ted Oke at Friday's Commencement at SHDHS.
A BIG WINNER — Teacher Al DeHaan is telling the au-
dience at Friday's Commencement exercises at SHDHS
that Greg Hartman was a big winner in technical
subjects.
