UCW meet at By Mary Chessell Carol Simons gave an ex- cellent Thanksgiving medita- tion at the October meeting of Varna United Church Women. She noted that the Pilgrims' first Thanksgiving celebrations were for being able to survive, as well as to prosper in their harsh new en- vironment. She said we don't experience real thankfulness until we can say with all our hearts, "My Cup overflows". Doris Wilson read the scrip- ture passages and Susan Kir- ton recieved the offering. Dianne Kirton went to a great deal of work in gather- ing corn cobs, straw wreaths and other materials, and showing us how to make very attractive Thanksgiving wreaths. Her daughter Susan was a big help, too, in getting everything laid out, even thinking to provide water and aloe vera in case someone was burned by the hot glue. I'm sure all the members were pleased with the result of their efforts, although a fre- quently heard comment was "I'm not artistic". President Bernice Reid reported on the excellent pro- gram and speaker at the Regional Rally in Brucefield which was attended by seven of our members. A shower is being held for Dale Simons in Goshen Church on Tuesday, October 16. Margaret Hunt, who has been a valued member of our U.C.W. since coming here ten Fall hike on Sunday On Sunday, October 14 at the Bannockburn Wildlife Area, the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority is sponsoring its annual autumn favourite, the Bannockburn Fall Hike. Between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., the ABCA naturalists will be leading guided hikes through the 62 acre Wildlife Area. Techniques that everyone can use to attract more wildlife will be discuss- ed and, after an invigorating hike, hot apple cider will be provided. The Bannockburn Wildlife Area is located four km. west of Brucefield off County Road 3. The 62 acre Conservation Authority -owned property contains an unuaual number of different types of vegeta- tion spread over varying topography; two factors which combine to provide homes or habitat for many different types of wildlife. Dan Kennaley, with the Conservation Authority, says "the Bannockburn Wildlife Area is a hikers paradise and never more beautiful than in the autumn." Hikers are advised to dress for the weather, wear boots and bring cameras or binoculars. The hike is free of charge and sure to be a great family outing. The church was again beautifully decorated for Thanksgiving by Ivan and Margaret McClymont. Two of Varna Dianne Kirton's lovely wreaths added to the decor.
