Adding the other majors
were Tim Moore and Ross
Finkbelner. Jon O'Connor
kicked four convert$ while
Moore kicked one cohvert to
round out the scoring.
Rookie quarterback Jon
O'Connor completed all four
passes thrown. Jerry Lam-
port went three for six in the
passing department.
Vern Iskauskas and Roger
Ward led the junior Panthers
in tackles against the Rams.
Daryl McCann was one of the
defensive stars, intercepting
two Stratford passes.
Monday, the seniors came
up on thewinningside for the
first time this season, beating
Stratford Central 21-18. The
win was a must for the local
boys, as are their remaining
three, after dropping their
two opening games.
Central scored first when
their punt returner was allow-
ed outside and rambled 75
yards down the sideline for
the touch down. Central was
unsuccessful on a two-point
conversion attempt.
It did not take long for the
locals to get on the board
themselves. South Huron
moved the ball 58 yards and
capped off the drive when
Scott Miller found Joe
Martens all alone in the end
zone with a pretty 12 -yard
.pass.
Bill Fisher was back in
uniform after an injury to his
shoulder in the season opener.
Fisher accounted for South
Huron's other two
touchdowns, the second of
which came on a screen pass
from Miller which covered 35
yards.
'The senior Panthers did all
of their scoring in the first
half and led 21-6 at half time.
Central came back with 12
unanswered points in the se-
cond half and threatened to go
ahead late in the fourth
quarter. Stratford marched
the ball 70 yards towards
South Huron's goal before be-
ing stopped within the ten
yard line by a strong defen-
sive effort and the clock.
Penalties hurt the senior
team once again. They pick-
ed up a total of 160 yards in
penalties including a 25 yard
unnecessary roughness
penalty which saw Brett Bat-
ten ejected from the game.
Locals remain
in NHL camps
The three Exeter natives
trying out with `National
Hockey League teams have
survived the latest cuts and
are continuing in pre -season
exhibition games.
Dave Shaw is with the
Quebec Nordiques and twin
brother Paul and Perry
Pooley are with the Winnipeg
Jets.
Shaw was the Nordiques
first draft selection in the
summer of 1982 and the
Pooley twins signed as free
agents with the Jets after
three successful seasons with
the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Dave Shaw was on defence
for the Quebec club against
the Maple Leafs in Toronto,
Wednesday and Sunday after-
noon against Boston. He has

South Huron Junior and
senior girls' basketball teams
participated in a tournament
this weekend in Wingham.
The seniors were the consola-
tion winners in the tourney
while the junior cagers were
defeated in the consolation
final.
The tournament opened
Thursday night when the
senior team faced Laurier of
London. South Huron came up
on the short end of a 33-17
score. The local seniors
played uninspired and were
intimidated by a much taller
London team. Jackie Cottrell
was the leading scorer for the
locals with eight points.
Friday morning, South
Huron played the host school,
Wingham. Wingham forced
the Panthers to come back
after they opened an early
eight point lead. Dianne Willis
led the comeback with seven
points and the game ended
23-16, giving the local girls the
opportunity to play in the con-
solation final.
The Panthers took on Clin-
ton in that contest. They took
it to Clinton early, causing
Clinton to make mistakes and
turn over the ball. The game
ended with South Huron
ahead 31-17 to claim the con-
solation trophy. Dianne Willis
and Jackie Cottrell were the
high scorers with 12 points
each.
The senior team was under
the guidance and coaching of
first time coaches Steve
Merner and Scott Lovie for
the tourney. Both coaches and
players should be con-
gratulated on their effort.
The junior girls lost their
opening game of the tourna-
ment 38-32 to Wilfred Launer.

the Chicago Black Hawks
supplying the opposition, the
Pooleys played on the same
line and Perry was named the
second star.
Two days later against the
Montreal Canadiens, Paul
scored two goals and was
chosen as the third star.
Parents of the local players
told the T -A the same thing
Monday morning, "They are
still hanging in there." Both
clubs have made con-
siderable cuts on the weekend
and the Pooley s and Shaw
were among the survivors.
The Jets are in Los Angeles
and Vancouver this week and
will be back in Winnipeg,

The team played well and
took the Toss hard. Diane
Dearing was the high scorer
with eight points and Lori
Forrester played a very
strong game.
The local juniors were able
to shake off the disappointint
loss and played a strong game
against Wingham for the
chance to play in the consola-
tion final. Kristine Lovie led
the way to a 24-14 win with
eight points.
The junior Panthers faced
Listowel in the consolation
final. South Huron was in-
timidated by Listowel's six
foot centre and were defeated
21-17. Kelly Whiteford was the
scoring leader for the local
juniors with nine points.
For some of the juniors it
was their first tournament.
Coach Terry O'Rourke felt it
was good experience for the
team and helped to bring the
team closer together.
Thursday, South Huron
plays host to Montcalm's
junior and senior teams for
exhibition matches. The
games start at 4:00 at the
local school.
Scott .Miller had an ex-
cellent game in the passing
department. He completed
nine of 17 passes covering 132
yards through the air. BILI
Fisher gained over 200 yards
in 24 carries and was one of
Miller's favourite pass
targets as was Scott Bogart.
South Huron defensive shut
Centrals's offence down in the
first half, but were hurt by the
sweep in the second half.
Stratford was held to only one
pass reception which covered
less than five yards. The Pan-
thers were able to block one
punt and Rob Bryson came up
with an interception.
The Juniors came up big
against a very strong
Goderich team, Thursday.
They defeated the defending
champions 14-13. Scott
Heywood and Tim Moore
were the touchdown scorers
for South Huron. However the
local juniors failed to convert
both touchdowns.
The two missed converts
proved to be the difference in
the game until late in the
fourth quarter. Roger Ward
scored the winning points
with a safety when he manag-
ed to sack the Goderich
quarterback in the end zone
during the dying moments of
the game.
For the senior football
squad it was a different story
against Goderich. They were
s
d(eated 21-1 by a strong, well
balance team.
Brian Topp opened the
scoring with a 65 -yard kick
which sailed into the Goderich
end zone. This single was the
only point the seniors manag-
ed to score against the
Goderich defence.
Goderich scored two
touchdowns in the second
quarter and added another in
the third to finish the scoring.
Goderich doubled South
Huron in total offence with 322
yards for the day.
Steve Gould and Jeff Pfaff
led the local seniors in tackles
with six each. Brian Topp,
Steve Batten and Sean
O'Rourke each added four.
