direct transmission link bet-
ween the Bruce Nuclear
Power Development and the
London area.
Hydro's preferred tans -
mission Lan would cut through
Huron County, a proposal that
farmers in the area suc-
cessfully opposed the first
time around.
The utility has made no
secret of wanting the
500,000 -volt Bruce transmis-
sion line to cut south through
Huron County and parts of
Middlesex County west of
London to a new, as yet un-
built ' London area
transformer station. The line
would then head east toward
an existing 500,00 -volt cor-
ridor linking the Milton and
Brantford'areas with the coal-
fired Nanticoke generating
station on Lake Erie.
But this time, Hydro plans
a "rigorous" campaign of
public information sessions
and public working group
meetings to familiarize
municipal officials and pro-
perty owners along what ap-
pears to be Hydro's former
preferred route - and present
choice - for the 500,000 -volt
lines.
Ivan Lloyd, Hydro's cor-
porate relations officer for the
Anyone who's undergone
home renovations will know
what I mean when I talk
about the mess that's created.
First it was all the sand that
was being tracked in when the
yard was torn up for the ad-
dition. A long-haired dog can
carry in enough sand to fill a
large sandbox, without even
knowing he's doing so. And if
you have a very spoiled, long-
haired dog, who likes to nap
in the middle of your bed, you
will be able to build sand
castles on your bedspread.
While I thought the sand
was a nuisance, sawdust has
proven to be even worse. Dai-
ly vacuuming of the entire
house has become routine. We
are adding a small entrance-
way at one end of our house.
and the main addition is at the
other end, forcing workers to
walk right through the entire
place. I can tell by the
sawdust footprints on the
carpet how many trips back
and forth were made each
day.
i had just learned to cope
with sawdust, when i found
out about plaster. And i've
been warned that next comes
dust.
As if that weren't enough,
we had houseguests move in
about three weeks ago and
they want to stay on. Believe
me, they are very unwelcome
houseguests, too. I think the
entire cricket population has
moved into our home.
The Crickets are one big
happy family - I'm sure they
brought along great-
grandparents, second cousins
and all their friends. Just so
they don't feel too welcome,
we've been killing them off at
every opportunity. But
perhaps that's the wrong ap-
proach - if we just mortally
wounded a couple, maybe
they would limp or crawl
back to the rest of the family
and word would get around
that we are not gracious
hosts.
('rickets are tiny, little ven-
triloquists The can hide

tain and throw their voices to

said Thursday the additional
environmental studies are be-
ing conducted in parts of
Huron County which he ad-
mitted are "pretty close" to
Hydro's former MI system
plan, first proposed more
than two years ago.
But Hydro is keeping its
otherfive plan options alive
as well, Lloyd said. Laun-
ching new environmental
studies in Huron, he said, is
essentially to "get our data up
to snuff for Bruce to London."
He said the additional
studies are needed if Hydro is
to proceed with plans for a
major environmental hearing
on the proposed power lines
by late 1985.
"These is still a lot of en-
viornmental data we don't
have, " said Lloyd. "Anything
we have is probably out of
date anyway." He said the
studies will help Hydro to
choose a preferred route for
the lines - already the subject
of one major provincial hear-
ing in 1982 and a controversial
court decision earlier this
year.
A provincial hearing board
decided on another transmis-
sion plan in June, 1982, choos-
ing M3 which avoided the
prime foordcrop lands of
Huron County and suggesting
that a Highway 401 corridor
be considered as well.
Mary's
musings
By Mary Alderson
takes three swats to bag a
cricket. The little critters stay
one hop ahead of the fly
swatter.
So, in additon to cleaning up
sand, sawdust and plaster, I
am also vacuuming cricket
carcasses. Last Saturday I
hunted out all the crickets I
could find and then
thoroughly cleaned the house
top to bottom. Unfortunately,
the powers -that -be just don't
want me to have a clean
house.
Sunday morning I was tak-
ing a shower when there was
a loud thud on the other side
of the shower curtain.
Wondering what my husband
had tripped over, I peeked
out. Strings holding a hanging
plant in the bathrom window
had given away and there in
the middle of the floor was a
broken philodendron, sur-
rounded by potting soil scat-
tered the length and width of
the bathroom. Not wanting to
step out of the shower into the
muddy mess, I called my hus-
band who had been safely
sleeping in bed all this time)
and he obligingly cleaned
up.
No sooner was that mess
cleared away, when i manag-
ed to create another. You
know those air fresheners you
buy that fit inside your
bathroom tissue on the tissue
holder? Well, they contain
hundreds -- no, thousands -- of
little tiny air freshener beads.
Here's a word of advice. If it's
humid and all those little tiny
green beads stick together,
don't shake the roller thinking
you can make the beads move
around again. You are more
likely to find out that the
roller will fall apart and you
will have thousands of little
tiny green beads scattered all
over the bathroom.

But the board's decision -
and the manner in which it
advertised the 35 days of
public hearings in Stratford -
was overturned in an Ontario
divisional court ruling three
months ago.
Hydr6, anxious to have the
transmission corridor in
place by the end of this
decade when all four new
reactors of the Bruce B
generating station are ex-
pected to be in operation,
wants to get the transmission
line project back on the rails.
Hence the need for new, up-
dated enviornmental studies.
The studies, which Lloyd
said were begun a month ago,
are taking place in Huron and
along Highway 401 in the
Cambridge area. It was the
401 route between Milton and
London and an accompanying
Bruce -to-Barrie link that
Hydro eventually chose
following the Stratford
hearings.
"No, we're not back to
square one - maybe square
three," joked Lloyd. He said
the studies will be completed
early in 1985, with an en-
viromental assessment of its
route choice sent to the pro-
vincial environment minister
likely by mid -year.
Although plans are still in-
complete, public information
sessions are tentatively set
for later this fall for Kincar-
dine, Lucknow, Blyth,
Seaforth, Exeter, Lucan,
Lobo and London. Plans to in-
volve public workings groups
to thrash over Hydro's sug-
gestion also are being
formulated.
Three series of information
sessions are planned - to in-
troduce the project once
again to residents living near
or along potential routes, to
inform them of alternative
routes and sites, and a final
session when Hydro comes up
with a recommended plan.
"We're not necessarily in-
tent on Mi," said Lloyd.

The Liquor Licence Board
of Ontario advised council
this week that Exeter Inn has
made application for
reclassification from hotel to
that of a tavern.
That would eliminate the
inn's requirement to provide
bedroom accommodations.
Members of council ex-
pressed no opposition to the
plan, although the Liquor
Board asked whether the
elimination of bedroom ac-
commodation would affect
the needs and wishes of the
community.
