Thanks to the recent Canada Cup telecasts, interest
in local hockey should get off to a good start.
The more than 100 participants in the Exeter Minor
Hockey Association program have been on ice for
almost two weeks at the Stephen township arena.
In addition the two are Junior 'D' hockey clubs have
also started practices. The Exeter Hawks and Lucan
Irish are each starting out this year with new officials.
The Hawks will have Doug Latta behind the bench
as coach with Tony Jones handling the managerial
duties. Similar to the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Hawks
will have an assistant coach for the first time in the per-
son of Keith Hartwick.
Latta and Hartwick were valuable members of the
Lucan Irish when that club won the provincial Junior
'D' championship in 1981-82.
In Lucan, the coach for the last three years Dave
Revington has moved on to Junior B company with the
Strathroy Blades. Taking over is Ed Parkinson who
spent a number of years as a player with the Lucan-
Ilderton Jets in senior ranks.
The Hawks and Irish have each been attracting
about 25 players to their early practices and if any
newcomers would like to join the workouts they will be
more than welcome.
This season the Western Junior D clubs will each
be allowed to sign two imports. In previous years if a
team could not find a suitable goaltender within their
normal area they could pick up one up through a goalie
assistance rule.
In these instances all clubs in the league had to ap-
prove the what really amounted to an import goalie.
This import rule will now cover any such probabilities.
The Irish and the Hawks will meet in an exhibition
game in Lucan on Wednesday, September 26 and in the
first regular schedule home game for the Hawks in Ex-
eter, October 12. The Irish start their regular season
at home against the Mitchell Hawks on October 10.
Tigers are in
By the time this issue hits the street, the Detroit
Tigers will likely have clinched the American league's
eastern division championship.
Thanks mainly to their flying start, the Tigers
should be the first of the four division winners to be ac-
claimed and the only one to win at least 100 games.
The Tigers need only five victories in their last 13
games to hit the century mark and make Sparky Ander-
son the first manager to win 100 games or more in both
major leagues. He accomplished this feat three times
with the Cincinatti Reds.
The Detroit Tigers is the only one this year which
can boost of total attendances in excess of two million
fans, both at home and away.
The Toronto Blue Jays are also hitting a new crowd
mark. For the first time in their eight year history, the
Jays will exceed two million in home attendance.
With seven home dates remaining, the Toronto club
needs only 47,619 fans to hit two million.
Any area fans still thinking of ordering playoff and
World Series tickets in Detroit, you can forget it. The
Tigers have stopped taking applications.
The first two American league playoff games will be
played in the park of the western winners in either Min-
nesota, Kansas City or California on October 2 and 3.
The Tuesday game will be in the daytime with the
Wednesday contest at night. The next three games if
necessary will go October 5, 6 and 7 in Detroit and all
will be at night.
If the Tigers and Chicago Cubs make the World
Series, the first two games will be played in the
American league city on the nights of October 9 and 10
with the next three going as day games in Chicago Oc-
tober 12, 13 and 14.
If the Cubs don't make the fall classic then the
scheduling will be reversed starting in the National
league on the same dates with night games.

Area wins 'A', Exeter 11 takes '1' in atom soccer
Eleven atom teams con-
verged on the high school on
Saturday for their playoff
tournament with unbeaten
league champion Arva as the
overall favourite for the A
championship.
In the first round Exeter 1
led by a three goal perfor-
mance by Ryan Lindenfield
and using beautiful passing
plays to create openings,
trounced Nairn II by a 10-1
score. Also scoring for Exeter
I were Mark Lynn, Jeff
Foster, Jason Heywood and
Ryan Stuart.
The two other Exeter teams
did not fare that well m the
first round with Exeter II los-
ing decisively to Grand Bend
by a 6-0 score and Exeter I11
losing to Lucan 11 7.0.
Exeter I went to the A
group and Exeter 11 and III
resumed play in the 13 group.
In the A group Exeter 1
played Lucan 1I in the second
round. The Exeter team
started out well and took a 2-0
lead on two goals by Jason
Heywood at half time.
In the second half it was a
different story however with
the Lucan team putting a lot
of pressure on the Exeter
defence. Lucan managed to
close the gap tot -1 and had a
lot more chances after that
but outstanding goalkeeping
by Jeremy Hern and Sharon
DeBruyn preserved a 2-1 Ex-
eter win.
in the semi-final action Ex-
eter I played Arva. The Arva
team, unbeaten during the
season, started off quick and
scored two goals in the first
five minutes and took all the
bounce out of the Exeter
team. Arva built up a 6-0
halftime lead.
In the second half Exeter 1
showed however that they
have a lot of character as they
displayed during the season,
and gave it everything they
had rather than giving up.
Exeter scored twice in the
second half and Arva once
and worked till the end for a
better result. Scoring for Ex-
eter were Mark Lynn and
Jason Heywood. Congratula-
tions to the team fora great
effort and a great season.
Arva went on to the final
against Grand Bend and beat
then 2-0 to claim the A
championship.
In the B division, first round
Exeter II received a bye and
Exeter 11I came up against
Nairn 11. The Exeter team
played a lot better in this
game than in their first game
and took the play to the Nairn
side from the outset and led
by a three goal performance
by Richard Phillips to send
the Nairn home with a 5-0
loss. Also scoring for Exeter
were Anna and Nicky Szabo.
The win gave gave Exeter
111 a bye to the B final. In

Exeter 1 best in atom tourne
Play ' in the Lucan and
district soccer Teague came to
a close this week with the last
game of the season between
Exeter I and Ilderton in the
pee wee division.
Ilderton came out fast and
scored one goal early in the
game. The Exeter team
worked hard and had most of
the play in the first half but
could not capitalize on their
chances and Ilderton manag-
ed to move one more time
before the half to take a 2-0
lead.
In the second half Exeter
kept working to get hack in
the game and it was a goal by
Henri DeBruyn that closed
the gap. Exeter had more
chances to tie the score but
could not come up with it and
in the late stages of the game
needed excellent goaltending
by Tim McAllister to keep the
score at 2-1
The pee wee division
travelled to Ilderton this
Saturday for their playoff
tournament. It turned into a
real mud battle. The rains of
the past week had turned the
Ilderton field into a real mud
hole.
With five teams par-
ticipating Exeter II by virtue
of their league win received a
bye into the A semi final. Ex-
eter I in their first game met
Nairn. The Exeter squad
seemed right at home on the
muddy field and never were
in any trouble. Excellent
passing plays set the stage for
the 4-0 win by the Exeter
team.
Scoring for Exeter I were
Ilenri DeBruyn 2 i, Sisivay
Sengkhounmany and Graham
Arthur one each. The win
gave the Exeter I team a bye
to the A final.
In semi-final action Exeter
II had no trouble disposing of
a strong Ilderton team to
reach the A final. Scoring for
Exeter II were Chris Haugh
and Jeff Kints. This set the
stage for a showdown bet-
ween Exeter I and Exeter II
in the A final.
Both teams have met dif-
ferent times throughout the
season with as a result always
excellent c1g games. This
game was no different. Ex-
eter I came out front and
scored within minutes from
the opening kickoff and then
play went back and forth with
Exeter II trying to tie it up but
just before half time it was
again Exeter I that scored.
In the second half Exeter I
played a defensive game and
Exeter II tried everything to
get some goals. The condition
of the playing field did not
help any.
Exeter I however managed
to hang on and record a 2-0
win and won the A champion -
.;hip. Scoring for Exeter I in

semi final action Exeter 11
faced Bryanston and made up
for their efforts in the first
game. Hard work and ex-
cellent passing kept the
Bryanston team that had
finished well ahead of Exeter
11 during the season, at bay
and at the end of regulation
time it was 0-0. Penalty shots
decided the game in favour of
the Exeter 11 team
In the B group final it was
Exeter I1 vs Exeter ill. As
has been the case throughout
the season these teams are so
evenly matched that is snakes
for exciting soccer and a lot of
fun. Both teams played their
hearts out to this their third
game of the day.
Exeter II took a 1-0 lead on
a goal by Steve Farquhar II
from a scramble in front of
the net after goalie Shawn
Webster had made an ex-
cellent save.
The teams kept battling
each other and towards the
end of the game Exeter 11 was
awarded a penalty shot.
Richard Phillips made no
mistake and tied the game at
1-1. Overtime could not decide
the game either so it was
penalty shots that finally gave
the B championship to Exeter
111. Well done coaches and
kids.
A very successful season
has come to an end. Exeter
teams won three out of four
league titles, two out of four
A playoff titles and two out of
four B playoff titles. The club
would like to thank the
coaches for their involvement
and the parents for their sup-
port. Thanks also to the
referees we know it is tough -
sometimes, there are always
people who seem to know
better.
A special thank you to
Kevin and Shari Pfaff and alt
those that made the Atoms
tournament this week such a
great event.
September 30 is the last day
on the program with the win-
dup at the new field and a
potluck and awards
ceremony afterwards. Let's
all come out and have fun
with the kids. Starting time
