(He's the one who became a 'happy hooker' after he retired). It reminded me that it's time, once again, for all the fall fairs that take place in Ontario. It was always a mystery to me why these exhibitions were called 'fair days', but a little research informed me that fairs date back a long way in our human history. To start with, as soon as man learned to scratch up a piece of land and drop in a few seeds, he wanted to compare what he had produced with his neighbour in the next cave. Still not satisfied, he then wanted to compare and exchange with the next tribe, but since these tribes were usually at war, a truce had to be declared at the grounds where they could compare and exchange their produce. The Irish, the Scottish and the English are long-time fair -goers, and in ancient days held their expositions at the grave -yards of long gone kings. Il was against the law to sue or arrest anyone on the fairgrounds, and personal possessions, being held to cover a debt, had to be return- ed during the time of the fair. A message was read from the king, urging the people to 'keep the king's peace and make no fray, outcry, shriek- ing or other noise'. There were strict rules about honest weights and measures; there was to be no hokum pokum or cheating, everything had to be 'fair'. This, then; is the history of our own fairs. Well, I've attended quite a few fairs, in my day, even competed in a few, but there's one that will be inscribed on my memory, forever, I think. His uncle had given him a Batty rooster and hen, King Henry and Anne Bolen, gorgeous little creatures, with lots of ma - haste, he left the pen gate ajar just long enough for Anne Bolen to escape and go scampering intoTed Pooley's corn field, growing along the back of our yard. Answering his frantic cries It seems to me... by Gwyn Whilsmith jestic strut and gleaming feathers. Braden had been waiting, as patiently as he could, all summer so he could enter them in the fall fair. The morning before fair - day, dawned sunny and clear, and he rushed out to feed the banties, before helping his dad build a crate to carry them to the exhibition, next day. In his excitement and for help, we all rushed out...Dad, Big Brother, the dog, and me...to dash into the dense forest of lush, green corn, stumbling up the dark rows, wet and heavy with tha morning's dew, calling wholeheartedly to Anne Bolen to please return to us, once more. Completely unsuc- cessful, and drenched to the skin, we straggled back to the way to house. Braden, beside himself with grief, sat down at the kitchen table and burst into tears. My own heart ached at his small - boy despair and I longed to comfort him and to say something that would help. I hugged his heaving shoulders, "Braden, remember the song we sing at Sunday School, 'God Sees the Little Sparrow Fall?' Well, if God watches over the sparrows, I'm sure he'll watch over Anne Bolen, too." He lifted his head, "Are you sure?" he demanded, his sobs decreasing. "I'm sure." "Will He bring her back''" his brown eyes searched mine. "Well...," '1 hesitated. "Let's say a little prayer about that." We did, and he dried his tears and even managed a weak smile as he went off to school. At noon, he came bursting in, "Is Anne Bolen back?" "No, but there's still time." finish By four o'clock my own faith was beginning to shake; I dreaded meeting his ques- tioning eyes when he came in from school. Supper time was a sombre affair, Braden con- vinced that either my hot-line to God had broken down or that 'He' just didn't care about poor, scared, lost Anne Bolen. As he was going out to feed King Henry, who was pacing his pen nervously, the phone rang, "Does your boy have a Banty hen?" "Yes!" "Well, she's under my front steps." You can only imagine the excitement of getting Anne coralled and back with King Henry, of Braden's exalta- tion, "God did care, He real- ly did", and the jubilation of transporting them proudly to the fair, on his old, red wagon. And yes, the. story has an even happier ending. King Henry and his consort did carry off first prize. It seem- ed the only 'fair' way to finish.
