More soccer rules
Drop ball situations arise where the referee stops
the play for a reason other than an infringement of the
rules or the ball leaving the field of play; for example,
due to an injury or because the ball is damaged or
deflates. Here, one player from each team will face
each other, and the ball will be dropped between them
.by the referee. The players must not kick the ball until
it hits the ground.
Other reasons for the stoppage of play involve in-
fringements of the rules. These can be divided into
direct free kicks, indirect free kicks andpenalty kicks,
and we'll now look at these.
Direct free kicks are awarded to a team which has
been the victim of unfair play, for example, where one
of their players has been deliberately kicked, tripped,
illegally charged or checked, where the opposing team
has illegally handled the ball and so on.
"Direct" in this case means that the player taking
the kick may, if he wishes, try to score a goal directly
from the free kick. The free kick is taken from the spot
where the violation of the rules took place. Opposing
players may not come within 10 yards of the ball until
the kick is taken.
Indirect free kicks area awarded against players
who have committed lesser infringements of the rules,
such as obstruction (interference), or, in some cases
ungentlemanly conduct such as shouting or arguing.
The kick is taken from the spot where the incident took
place. A goal cannot be scored directly from this type
of kick. Opposing players cannot come within 10 yards
of the ball until the kick is taken.
' Penalty kicks are allowed against a team who has
committed an infringement which deserved a direct
free kick within their own penalty area. When this hap-
pens the ball is placed on the penalty spot, and the team
to which the kick has been awarded may choose any
of their players to shoot the ball and try to score a goal.
Only the player taking the kick and the goalkeeper
are allowed inside the penalty area until after the ball
is kicked. The goalie must stand on his goal line and
must not move until the ball is kicked.
After kick-off, centre kicks, throw-ins, goal kicks,
corner kicks, free kicks, and penalty kicks, the player
who is taking the throw-in or kick is not allowed to play
the ball twice. After the throw-in or kick the ball must
by played by another player (on either team) before the
player who has taken the kick or throw-in can play the
ball again.
The last major rule we'll be dealing with here is pro-
bably the one which is least understood - the off side
rule.
If it were not for the off side rule, there would be
nothing to prevent a player from either team simply
standing around on his opponents' goal line and waitig
for passes from his team mates. The off side rule
prevents this type of advantage -taking by stating that
any player is off side if he is nearer his opponents' goal
line than the last two defencemen (usually the
goalkeeper and the defenceman nearest to his own goal
line).
Soccer is a team sport and it would be unfair for
a team to start out on the attack, say, from their own
end of the field with four forwards working together,
but with another player standing next to the opposing
goalie waiting for the ball.
Again. let's suppose the "X" team is attacking, and
this time one of the two players nearer the centre line
has possession. In this example the ball can be passed
to the "X" player inside the penalty area - he is on side.
as there are two of his opponents nearer the goal line
than he is.
Important featuresof the off side rule are:A player
cannot be off side in his own end of the field: off side
cannot occur directly from a corner kick. throw-in or
goal kick and for off side to apply, the player must be
in an off side position at the beginning of the particular
play.
Off side does not apply when an opposing player last
plays the hall. For example. supposing a goalkeeper has
possession of the ball. and an attacking player is nearer
the goal line than any defending player. if the
goalkeeper were to fumble. drop. miskick or misthrow
the ball, then the attacking player could legally play the
hall.
Before being called on the off side. a player must
actually do something which is considered taking an un-
fair advantage - for example. play the hall. or distract
the defence.
if a player inside the six yard line is clearly in an
off side position. but if the player•at the edge of the
penalty area shoots for goal and scores. then the goal
would be allowed. Off side would not he called so long
as the player inside the six yard line did nothing to af-
fect the play.
When off side is called against an attacking team.
a free kick is awarded to clie defending team at the place
where the infringement took place.
A young player should realize at the outset that to
make a pass is not a blow a kiss at the coach's daughter:
Passing and shooting are so very important in soccer.
Accurate passes are needed in order for a team to make
progress towards goal, and accurate shots are required
to score goals.
Before making a pass. the player should know
where his teammates are located on the field and also
where the opponents are standing. The pass should be
made with the inside of the foot making contact with
the centre of the hall.
The non -kicking foot should he placed beside the
ball when the pass is made. A good exercise for pass-
ing is by having three players interpassing between
each other. Start the exercise at a slow pace. move on
to a medium pace, then finally work in td a running
pattern.

On diamond two, last year's

Windsor Ottawa Tavern from
the greater Windsor fastball
league. They have won
several tournaments in the

The new fence has been
erected at the main diamond

people it was made possible.

Blue Crew, Exeter Indians,
Chiselhurst, Good Times
Chiefs, Legion, Lions Club,
Optimist Club, Ball dogs, Ex-

Their support was greatly
appreciated. Also thanks to
Jim MacGregor Wejding who
did an excellent job of
fabricating the fence at a very
reasonable rate. And to the
Exeter Royals players who
took the time to paint and
wire the fence. Each section
cost approximately $130 with
each donator getting a share
of money left over back.
So next Friday night come
on out and see some excellent
fastball and have a look at the
new tence. There is no admis-
sion to the games and food
