were seen going through the lineup more than once during the girls' visit.

Only one objection was
detailed for the Huron Motor
Products proposal, that com-
ing from Flora and Jack
Doerr, whose property is
located beside the proposed
site of the new dealership
facility.
They expressed concern
that their property would be
devalued through the
development and suggested it
was "poor planning" to

The zoning bylaw also re-
quires that parking be
established at the rear of the
four-plex, but Parker has ask-
ed that parking be allowed at
the front portion of the pro-
perty. It is required that the
parking area be paved.
When it came time for a
vote on the decision to require
•the property owner to provide
the storm drain, Fuller was
joined in support of the mo-
tion by Councillors Morley
Hall and Bill Rose.
Josephson remained oppos-
ed and was joined by Coun-
cillors Dorothy Chapman and
Ben Hoogenboom in that
regard, while Reeve Bill
Mickle decided to abstain.
Shaw ruled that the absten-
tion was a vote in the affir-
mative under the town's pro-
cedural policy and he
declared the motion carried.
change good residential land
to commercial, noting that
some planning is often under-
taken to accommodate the
present only.
There was also concern ex-
pressed over drainage, the ef-
fect on their water supply
from a Targe septic tank
system, winter snow removal'
and safe travel into their
laneway.
Cliff Marsden, who ap-
peared at the public meeting
and supported both proposals,
noted that Doerr himself runs
a commercial business from
his home.
The MF Builders executive
went on to tell the hearing
that the area suffers in that
Exeter solicits industries but
has not secured a land bank at
affordable prices for those in-
dustries which may be in-
terested in the town.
He said the two zoning
changes would provide an op-
portunity` to bring industry
and income into the area.
He termed them
"reasonable developments, in
reasonable ways", adding
that the concerns expressed
by those at the meeting were
adequately covered by laws.
Marsden explained that
serviced industrial land in
Goderich can be purchased
for as low as $9,000 per acre,
while the cost in Exeter in
some locations is in the
neighborhood of $50,000 per
acre.
Ilamather told Murphy that
he would get possession of the
property on October 1 if the
zoning change is approved
and Marsden advised that his
firm would hope to have the
new facility erected within
three months.
It is anticipated that the
necessary site plans will be
available in time to present to
Usborne council for a decision
on August 14.

Three injured in collisions
Three people sustained
minor injuries and property
damage amounted to just
under $20,000 in four collisions
investigated by the Exeter
OPP this week.
All three injuries were sus-
tained in a two -car crash on
Highway 83 west of Dashwood
around 3:30 p.m., Sunday.
A car driven by Mary Orr,
RR 3 Dashwood, was pro-
ceeding east and passed a
vehicle to the right as the lat-
ter was stopped making a left
turn. The Orr vehicle went out
of control as it came back on
Works staff
gets praise
The town's works depart-
ment came in for some lofty
praise this week from a local
resident who tried unsuc-
cessfully for almost four days
to have a plumber look at a
plugged sewer problem.
"I guess that's why we have
public servants and why
private business people
sometimes go broke," wrote
Marilyn Hohner in a letter to
council extending her thanks
to the assistance of the works
department.
After trying unsuccessfully
to get a plumber, Mrs.
Hohner called Joan Kells and
the latter notified Ross
Mathers, who was on stand-
by duty.
The ratepayer said Mathers
arrived within one half hour
to help with the problem.

promotions
Exeter should be more visi-
ble at area festivities and
special occasions, claims
Councillor Bill Rose.
At Tuesday's council ses-
sion, he said the weekend
parade at Dashwood
Friedsburg Days had several
floats from other area
municipalities, but not
Exeter.
He said the town should be
promoted at such events as a
good place to live and work.
"We have to do some pro-
moting in our own area," he
concluded.
Councillor Ben Hoogen-
boom said it was a "fan-
tastic" idea and reported that
he had received many
plaudits after putting in a
commercial float at the Hen-
sall centennial.
In another related matter,
Reeve Bill Mickle reported
that some replies had been
received from the public
regarding what types of
business they would like to
see established in town.
He urged that other
ratepayers fill in the form
which was sent out with the
tax notices in an effort to
assist the BIA and economic
development committee.

Kevin Short tops
Police College test
Sgt. Kevin Short of the local
police department received
top marks and glowing praise
for his performance in a re-
cent five-week junior
management course at the
Aylmer Police College.
Despite being one,,of the
youngest members of the
class and among the more in-
experienced in his rank, Short
topped the class with a 99 per-
cent average. The class
average was 91 percent.
The local policeman receiv-
ed a perfect mark on a pre -
course test, one of the few to
ever attain that distinction.
Police College officials
termed him "eager and in-
volved" and the report sub-
mitted to council this week by
police committee chairman
Bill Rose also drew com-
plimentary expressions from
members of council.
Rose also advised council
that meetings had been held
with local members of the
police department over
"areas of concern."
He said he could not detail
those areas at present, but
would make a final report to
council at a later date on the
entire deliberations.
The report from the police
department for the month of
July detailed the following
statistics: 12 collisions with
two injuries and property
damage of 811,400, nine
charges under the Highway
Traffic Act and four under the
Liquor Licence Act, eight
thefts and three break and
enters with total loot amoun-
ting to over $1,000, three in-
cidents of wilful damage with
the loss being 8265, one
assault charge and six com-
plaints regarding animals.
