HERE FOR CHRISTMAS?
Christmas is still a few
months away, but a possible
gift suggestion for the person
who has everything is the
Huron County Atlas.
Atlas editor A.Y. Mclean of
Seaforth outlined what he
termed an "optimistic"
timetable for the production
of the atlas. This timetable
sets the pliblication date at
November 1.
McLean said one problem
that has already cast doubts
on the deadline is the submis-
sion of color photographs.
They don't always reproduce
well in black and white print
McLean said.
It was•noted that McLean
will write to .well-known
Canadian writer and Huron
County native Harry Boyle.
Boyle will be asked to prepare
a one-page overview of the
county for the atlas.
Says budget
was .no news
A no news budget is what
the provincial Tories have
given farmers MPP Murray
Elston told the Huron Cognty
Federation of Agriculture.
Elston (L—Huron-Bruce),
told the June meeting of the
federation members that the
16.3 percent agricultural
budget increase only brings
the ministry back up to its
1982 spending level.
The Liberal member of pro-
vincial parliament
acknowledged • that
agriculture minister Hon.
Dennis Timbrell did include
$9 million in the beginning
farmers' program and pro-
vincial dollars are going to be
spent to benefit the northern
Ontario agriculture sector.
Elston said he couldn't be
totally negative about the
budget as there are small
business initiatives which will
benefit farmers.
"But there is very little ac-
tual amounts being spent on
agriculture," said MPP
Elston.
Elston said the agriculture
sector needs more long term
financing and noted that there
are still farmers around who
are benefitting from the by-
gone junior farmer loans.
The problem said the MPP,
particularly in the northern
part of his riding is the in-
creasing number of bankrupt=
cies because farmers are'
unable to get loans to main-
tain the farming operation.
Ontario leads the country in
the number of farm bankrupt-
cies said Elston noting there
were 157 bankruptcies in 11
months last- year and 64 to
date this year.
Man fined $1,000
for cutting trees
A former -Kincardine area
man has been fined $1000 for
cutting about 60 undersized
trees in Huron County.
John Nesbitt of Aylmer and
formerly of Kincardine was
charged under the Huron.
County tree cutting bylaw for
cutting . trees in East
Wawanosh To.vnship on May
24 of last year. County tree
commissioner Joe Gibson
said this is the second time
the county has had a convic-
tion under its bylaw.
Gibson said the landowner
involved had an agreement
with R.K.M. Wood Products
of Tiverton for marketable
timber. However, Mr. Gibson
said the landowner noticed
the size of trees being cut and
called him in.
Nesbitt had been hired by
the Tiverton firm to cut the
trees
A similar charge against
R.K.M. Wood Products was
withdrawn.
The case was heard May 31
by Justice of the Peace Gor-
don Ferris/in provincial of-
fences court (criminal divi-
sion) in Goderich.
